  • In predicting the critical heat flux (CHF) in pool boiling systems, the contact angle between the boiling surface and the liquid and the surface roughness are considered to be the important parameters. From the microscopic viewpoint, those are affected by the micro/nano structure of the surface. Several studies have been reported on the dependence of CHF on the surface microstructure such as height and width of the cavities and distances between them. In this paper, the effects of the boiling surface characteristics on CHF are reviewed and the future research issues are discussed for better prediction of CHF.

  • In this paper, the coaxial monitoring system to capture image of weld pool was developed in laser-arc hybrid welding. In order to obtain the reliable image, green laser was used as a illumination system and measuring components such as band pass filter, ND (Neutral Density) filter and shutter speed was designed and optimized. Using this monitoring system, weld pool images were captured according to laser power, welding speed, welding current and interspace between laser and arc through the experiment. ANOVA (Analysis of Variation) was carried out to identify the influence of process variables on bead widths extracted from captured images of monitoring system. Welding speed and current were major factor to affect weld pool.

  • Laser welding is widely used in the industry for the advantage of small heat affected zone and short weld process time. Conduction limit welding can be used to modify the surface characteristic and it is important to identify the heat affecting area correctly for the improvement of manufacturing accuracy. Since time and length scale associated with laser welding process are extremely small, numerical study can be a useful tool. In this study, two-dimensional axi-symmetric version of energy equation with enthalpy method has been used to analyze the effect of laser input conditions on final shape by the laser welding process. The proposed numerical procedure has been benchmarked with several experimental results and compared well. The modified Marangoni and Peclet number have been introduced using controllable input variables. Simple parametric researches have been performed for high Pr number material. The results show that higher Marangoni number increase fluid mixing, thus generating convex type weld pool. On the other hand, the width of the weld pool is proportional to Peclet number.

  • Five parameters such as the entrance size of the front wall, conduit size, wave period, wave height and the width of water pool were selected to estimate the inflow rate, which is basic and essential input data to design seawater exchange breakwater with a submerged mound by conducting hydraulic model experiments. In the results of multiple regression analysis, log-log equation showed a good agreement rather than linear equation and the estimation of inflow rate was well done with only two parameters except entrance size of the front wall, wave period and the width of water pool. Finally, non-dimensional flow rate equation is derived.

  • The effect of enhanced geometry (pore diameter, gap width) is investigated on the pool boiling of R-123/oil mixture for the enhanced tubes having pores with connecting gaps. Tubes with different pore diameters (and corresponding gap widths) are specially made. Significant heat transfer degradation by oil is observed for the present enhanced tubes. At 5% oil concentration, the degradation is 26 to 49% for $T_{sat}=4.4^{\circ}C$. The degradation increases 50 to 67% for $T_{sat}=26.7^{\circ}C$. The heat transfer degradation is significant even with small amount of oil (20 to 38% degradation at 1% oil concentration for $T_{sat}=4.4^{\circ}C$), probably due to the accumulation of oil in sub-tunnels. The pore size (or gap width) has a significant effect on the heat transfer degradation. The maximum degradation is observed for $d_p$ = 0.20 mm tube at $T_{sat}=4.4^{\circ}C$, and for $d_p$=0.23 mm tube at $T_{sat}=26.7^{\circ}C$. The minimum degradation is observed for $d_p$=0.27 mm tube for both saturation temperatures. It appears that the oil removal is facilitated for the larger pore diameter (along with larger gap) tube. The highest heat transfer coefficient with oil is obtained for $d_p$ =0.23 mm tube, which yielded the highest heat transfer coefficient for pure R-123. The heat transfer degradation increases as the heat flux decreases.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the design criteria and detailed design model by reviewing the issues related to geometry, formation process, destruction process, hydraulic function, restoration and ecological function of the step-pool from the existing research results, to apply the step-pool sequences to river restoration. Based on the analysis and review results, the design criteria for the structure and size of the step-pool are presented as ratio of the step spacing and the channel width, ratio of the unit step slope and channel slope, and ratio of step height and the particle size. To ensure structural stability of the step, stability analysis method of overturning based on the keystone theory was proposed as a design criterion. As a detailed design concept, a layout model was proposed by applying the imbricating structure of keystones and arch stones to the planar, longitudinal and transverse configurations of the step-pool.

  • Selective laser melting (SLM) can produce a layer of a metal powder and then fabricate a three-dimensional structure by a layer-by-layer method. Each layer consists of several lines of molten metal. Laser parameters and thermal properties of the materials affect the geometric characteristics of the melt pool such as its height, depth, and width. The geometrical characteristics of the melt pool are determined herein by optical microscopy and three-dimensional bulk structures are fabricated to investigate the relationship between them. Powders of the commercially available Fe-based tool steel AISI H13 and Ni-based superalloy Inconel 738LC are used to investigate the effect of material properties. Only the scan speed is controlled to change the laser parameters. The laser power and hatch space are maintained throughout the study. Laser of a higher energy density is seen to melt a wider and deeper range of powder and substrate; however, it does not correspond with the most highly densified three-dimensional structure. H13 shows the highest density at a laser scan speed of 200 mm/s whereas Inconel 738LC shows the highest density at 600 mm/s.

  • Due to excellent weld quality, orbital welding with TIG is widely applied to pipe welding. But concave back bead is formed easily in overhead and inclined-up position of butt orbital welding. It is difficult to find a paper to overcome this problem. In this study, in order to make convex back bead in overhead and inclined-up position of pipe 5G welding, control method of molten pool was actively investigated. Melt run welds were conducted on thickness 4.0mm SS400 with overhead and inclined-up position and was observed the variation of bead shape after welding with the bead former developed. The height of back bead showed the trend of increase as the distance from molten pool to the bead former was decreased. Also, there is no trend in the bead width of front and back as welding position was changed or the distance from molten pool to the bead former was decreased.

  • Anyang pool is the leisure facility which was constructed in the Japanese colonial era and widely used even after independence. That is why it is sufficiently necessary to study its aspect after independence in terms of historical investigation. The purpose of this thesis is to describe how Anyang pool has been used after independence most clearly. Study method of this thesis is the method of literature review using the photos of newspaper, official gazette and magazine. And this thesis is meaningful in that it examines the leisure facility that existed in the metropolitan area not in the province, and expands the width of consideration for leisure facility at the early days of foundation of Korea. In this regard, this thesis concludes that Anyang pool had played not less role after liberation than in Japanese colonial era.

  • The effect of oil on convective boiling of R-123 in an enhanced tube bundle is experimentally investigated at $26.7^{\circ}C$ saturation temperature. The enhanced tube had pores (0.23 mm diameter) and connecting gaps (0.07 mm width), which had been optimized using pure R-123. The effects of oil concentration (0 to 5%), heat flux (10 to $40\;kW/m^2$), mass velocity (8 to $26\;kg/m2^s$) and vapor quality are investigated. The oil significantly reduces the bundle boiling heat transfer coefficient. With 1% oil, the reduction is approximately 35%. Further addition of oil further reduces the heat transfer coefficient. The data are also compared with the pool boiling counterpart. The reduction in the heat transfer coefficient is smaller in a bundle (convective boiling) than in a pool (single-tube pool boiling), with larger difference at a smaller heat flux. Similar to pure R-123 case, the effects of mass velocity and vapor quality are negligible for the convective boiling of R-123/oil mixture.
