In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the evolution of weld pool geometry with moving free surface during low-energy density laser welding process. The free surface elevates near the weld pool edge and descends at the center of the weld pool if d$\sigma$/dT is dominantly negative. It is shown that the predicted weld pool width and depth with moving free surface are a little greater than those with flat weld pool surface. It is also believed that the weld pool surface oscillation during the melting process augments convective heat transfer rate in the weld pool. The present analysis with moving free surface should be considered when We number is very small compared to 1.0 since the deformation of the weld pool surface is noticeable as We number decreases.
In this study, numerical investigation has been performed on the evolution of weld pool geometry with moving free surface during low-energy density laser welding process. The free surface elevates near the weld pool edge if ${\partial}{\sigma}/dT$ is dominantly negative. On the contrary, the free surface rise at the center of weld pool in case of mainly positive ${\partial}{\sigma}/dT$. The predicted weld pool width and depth with moving free surface are 5∼15%$5{\sim}15%$ greater than those with flat weld pool surface. It is considered that weld pool surface oscillation during melting process augments convective heat transfer rate in the weld pool.
Dilution is an important factor which influences the properties of clad layer. In this paper the change of dilution during laser cladding and the control of dilution are simulated by a finite element method. The adaptive mesh method is adopted for the time-dependent finite element method computation so that the shape of melt pool can be well represented. The situation of the width control of melt pool is also simulated, which indicates that the dilution can be controlled if the width of melt pool is controlled. Computational results indicate that if a line energy (input energy per unit distance) remains constant the dilution will increase with time, especially at the beginning. Simulation results show that it is possible to control dilution in a certain range if the line energy decreases with time. Experiment of Nd: YAG laser cladding with wire feeding is performed. Experiment results coincide well with the FEM results.
In this study, pool boiling performance of Turbo/B-type metal-formed tubes was investigated. Tubes with three different cavity gap width(0.04 mm, 0.07 mm, 0.1 mm) were manufactured and tested using R-11, R-123 and R-134a. Tests were conducted at two different saturation temperatures $4.4^{\circ}C$ and $26.7^{\circ}C.$ Heat flux was varied from 10 kW/m2 to 50 kW/m2. It was found that optimum gap width varied for different refrigerants. For low-pressure refrigerants such as R-11 or R-123, optimum gap width was 0.07 mm. For high-pressure refrigerant R-134a, however, the optimum value was 0.1 mm. Compared with the heat transfer performance of the smooth tube, the metal-formed tubes enhanced the heat transfer coefficients significantly - 6.5 times for R-11, 6.0 times for R-123 and 5.0 times for R-134a (at $4.4^{\circ}C$ saturation temperature and 40 kW/m2 heat flux), which are comparable with the performance of foreign products. The heat transfer coefficients of R-134a were larger than those of R-11 or R-123, and they increased as the saturation temperature increased.
Temperature field and cooling rate are important parameters to influence the properties of clad layer and the heat affected zone. In this paper the temperature field and cooling rate of laser cladding are studied by a two-dimensional time-dependent finite element model. Experiment has been carried out by Nd:YAG laser cladding with wire feeding. Research results indicate that at the beginning of cladding, the width and depth of melt pool increase with cladding time. The cooling rate is related to position, cladding time, cladding speed, and preheating temperature. The temperature near melt pool changes rapidly while the temperature far from melt pool changes slowly. With the increase of cladding time, cooling rate decreases. The further the distance from the melt pool, the lower the temperature and the slower the cooling rate. The faster the cladding speed, the faster the cooling rate. The higher the preheating temperature, the slower the cooling rate. The FEM results coincide well with the experiment results.

The dramatic increase in the depth of a weld bead penetration has been demonstrated by welding a stainless steel in GTA (Gas-Tungsten-Arc) process with activating flux which consists of oxides and halides. However, there is no commonly agreed mechanism fer the effect of flux on the process. In order to make clear the mechanism, each behavior of the arc md the weld pool in GTA process with activating flux is observed in comparison with a conventional GTA process. A constricted anode root is shown in GTA process with the activating flux, whereas a diffuse anode root is shown in the conventional process. These anode roots are related strongly to metal vapor from the weld pool and the metal vapor is also related to temperature distributions on the weld pool surface. Furthermore, it is suggested that a balance between the Marangoni force and the drag force of the cathode jet should dominate the direction of re-circulatory flow in the weld pool. The electromagnetic force encourages the inward re-circulatory flow due to the constricted anode root in the case with flux. The difference in flow direction in the weld pool changes the geometry or depth/width ratio of weld bead penetration.
4-panel of 1m height and 45cm width were fixed on the $40cm{\times}40cm$ bottom plate and the opening of the panel comer was 5cm. Diameter of stainless vessel is loom and its height is 2cm and it located at the center of the bottom plate. 78mL liquid fuel was filled in the vessel and its depth was 1cm. Flame temperature was measured with K type thermocouple, and radiation heat of flame was measured with heat flux meter. Flame height and its behavior was visualized with video camera. and mass burning rate was measured by fuel combustion time. According to the development of fire, flame swirling was begin. From the experiment the mass burning rate was larger and the height of flame was higher than the usual pool fire flame. Flame temperature and heat flux also increased far more than the pool fire. Consequently the swirling air flow through the openings between the panel and thermal buoyance contribute to increase of heat release rate, flame length and mass burning rate.
Several recent studies have revealed that boiling heat transfer may be considerably enhanced in a narrow restricted region. In his study, the narrow restricted region was formed by attaching a perforated plate on top of a boiling surface. Through systematic experiments, effects of the hole size, hole pattern, gap width between the perforated plate and the boiling surface were investigated using water or R-113. Results show that perforated plates considerably enhance the boiling of water or R-113. For water, especially, they have outperformed commercial enhanced tubes, which confirms that boiling enhancement mechanism of the perforated plate (thin film evaporation beneath the elongated bubble) is very effective to the boiling of high surface tension liquids such as water. Optimum configuration was found - 3.0 mm hole diameter, 15 mm * 15 mm hole pattern, 0.3 ~ 0.5 mm gap width for water, and 2.0 mm hole diameter, 3.5 mm * 3.5 mm hole pattern, O.5 mm gap width for R-113. A correlation which correlates most of the data within .+-. 30% was also developed.
Welding process monitoring is advantageous for maintaining weld quality and numerous sensing techniques have been developed for laser welding. Coaxial image monitoring enables direct monitoring of the weld pool shape and keyhole behavior, but requires the complex optical system and the image processing technique. In this study, we coaxially acquired the weld pool images during laser lap welding by using the camera and special illumination. The welding characteristics - pool width and length, keyhole shape, etc - were extracted by using image processing and the relationship between these characteristics and the penetration depth were investigated.
