The paper describes spectroscopic characteristics of plasma induces in the pulsed YAG laser welding of alloys containing a large amount of volatile elements. The authors have conducted the spectroscopic analyses of laser induced Al-Mg alloys plasma in the air and argon atmosphere. In the air environment, the identified spectra were atomic lines of Al, Mg, Cr, Mn, Cu, Fe and Zn, and singly ionized Mg lines, as well as the intense molecular spectra of A10 and Mg0 formed by chemical reactions of evaporated Al and Mg atoms from the pool surface with oxygen in the air. In argon atmosphere, Mg0 and AI0 spectra vanished, but AIH spectrum was detected. The hydrogen source was presumably hydrogen dissolved in the base metals, water absorbed on the surface oxide layer, or $H_2$ and $H_2O$ in the shielding gas. The resonant 1ines of Al and Mg were strongly self-absorbed, in particular, self-absorption of the Mg 1ine was predominant. These results show that the laser induced plasma was made of metal1ic vapor with relatively low temperature and high density.
The HANARO, a multi-purpose research reactor of 30 MWth open-tank-in-pool type, has been under normal operation since its initial criticality In February, 1995. Many experiments should be safely performed to activate the utilization of the HANARO. A flow simulation facility is being developed for the endurance test of reactivity control units for extended life times and the verification of structural integrity of those experimental facilities prior to loading in the HANARO. This test facility is composed of three major parts; a half-core structure assembly, flow circulation system and support system. The flow circulation system is composed of a circulation pump, a core flow pipe, a core bypass flow pipe and instruments. The system is to be filled with de-mineralized water and the flow should be met the design flow to simulate similar flow characteristics in the core channel of the half-core test facility to the HANARO. This paper, therefore, describes an analytical analysis to study the flow behavior of the system. The computational flow analysis has been performed for the verification of system pressure variation through the three-dimensional analysis program with standard k-$\epsilon$ turbulence model and for the verification of the structural piping integrity through the finite element method. The results of the analysis are satisfied the design requirements and structural piping integrity of flow circulation system.
SNU-RCCS is a water pool type RCCS (Reactor Cavity Cooling System) developed for VHTR (Very High Temperature Reactor) application by SNU (Seoul National University). Since radiation heat transfer is the major process of passive heat removal in a RCCS, it is important to determine the precise emissivity of the reactor vessel. Review studies have used a constant emissivity in the passive heat removal analysis, even though the emissivity depends on many factors such as temperature, surface roughness, oxidation level, wavelength, direction, atmosphere conditions, etc. Therefore, information on the emissivity of a given material in a real RCCS is essential in order to properly analyze the radiation heat transfer in a VHTR. The objectives of this study are to develop a method for compensation of the factors affecting the emissivity measurement using an infrared thermometer and to estimate the true emissivity from the measured emissivity via the developed method, especially in the SNU-RCCS environment. From this viewpoint, we investigated factors such as the attenuation effect of the window, filling gas, and the effect of background radiation on the emissivity measurements. The emissivity of the vessel surface of the SNU-RCCS facility was then measured using a sight tube. The background radiation was subsequently removed from the measured emissivity by solving a simultaneous equation. Finally, the calculated emissivity was compared with the measured emissivity in a separate emissivity measurement device, yielding good agreement with the emissivity increase with vessel temperature in a range of 0.82 to 0.88.
Chlorophyll-a and its degradation products (pheopigment) contained in the sediment were determined to evaluate the eutrophication status in the downstream of Nakdong River. The chlorophyll-a and pheopigment concentrations of sediment ranged 11-646 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$ (mean 172 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$) and 48-1,564 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$ (mean 454 mg $\mu \textrm m^{-2}$) over 11 sampling stations of the Nakdong River. The chloropigment concentrations in this local area were higher than other values reported previously and this river waters showed hypertrophic status in view of sedimentary chloropigment. Total chloropigment standing crops of sediment, which are the residuals after the longterm degradation, were 2.2-3.6 fold higher than chlorophyll-$\alpha$ contents of overlying water. The amounts of chloropigments of sediment suggest a large contribution of phytoplankton to the sediment. While chloropigment standing crops are evaluated with organic-C and nitrogen contents, the algal contribution to the carbon and nitrogen pool of the sediment were estimated to be approximately 30% and 40%, respectively.

Recently, the demand of landscape lighting for underwater dam is rapidly increased by expansion of hydrophilic space. But it occurred the problems such as weakness of safety and display effect of underwater dam lighting lamp currently in use. Therefore, for solving these problems and improving underwater dam lighting lamp, this paper is focused on safety, energy saving, display flexibility of underwater dam lighting lamp and analyzed the related deriving problems by research on the actual condition. As a result, it presents a developed LED mold type underwater light instead of underwater dam lighting lamp. By the results of this research, it is considered that practical use of underwater dam lighting is very useful in waterside space for dams, water fountain, swimming pool, and etc. Moreover, it can be extended/applied in various ways.
We investigated latitudinal changes in mesozooplankton community structure during a cruise between October 16 and November 30 of 2007 from four distinctive regions in the northwestern Pacific Ocean: Warm pool area (longitude $135^{\circ}$ line), Philippine EEZ (PEEZ), Japan EEZ (JEEZ), and East China Sea (ECS). Major taxa of numerical importance were Clausocalanidae (Clausocalanus spp.), Oncaeidae (Oncaea spp.), and Oithonidae (Oithona spp.) in oligotrophic regions, however Paracalanidae (Paracalanus spp.) was the most abundant group in the ECS. Mesozooplankton size group of <1 mm dominated in PEEZ and WP (48% and 56%, respectively), but mesozooplankton (>1 mm) were of importance in the JEEZ and ECS (34% and 38%, respectively). Mesozooplankton biomass and abundance were high in the JEEZ and ECS, and low in the oligotrophic WP and PEEZ waters, with positive relationship with both total Chl-a and heterotrophic protist biomass. Latitudinal change in mesozooplankton community structure was related with water temperature, with copepods such as Lucicutia spp. and Pleuromamma spp. being present only in warm waters. The geographical expansion of mesozooplankton with a preference for warmer waters could potentially be useful as an indicator for detecting ocean warming.
Geothermal springs in India, formed as a result of volcanic or tectonic activities, are characterized by high temperature and relatively abundant reduced compounds. These thermal springs are inhabited by characteristic thermophilic organisms including cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria are among the few organisms that can occupy high temperature aquatic environments including hot springs. In alkaline and neutral hot springs and streams flowing from them cyanobacteria can form thick colourful mats that exhibit banding patterns. The present investigation involves study of mat forming cyanobacterial flora from hot springs located in Bakreswar, West Bengal, India. The important species found are Synechococcus bigranulatus, S. lividus, Gloeocapsa gelatinosa, G. muralis, Phormidium laminosum, P. frigidum, Oscillatoria princes, O. fragilis, Lyngbya lutea, Pseudanabaena sp., Calothrix thermalis, and Fischerella thermalis. Their distribution pattern in relation to physico-chemical parameters of spring water has also been studied. Three cyanobacterial strains of the above mentioned list were grown in culture and their pigment content and nitrogen fixing capacity were also studied. Nitrogen fixing capacities of Calothrix thermalis, Nostoc sp. (isolated in culture) and Fischerella thermalis are 5.14, 0.29, and 2.60 n mole $C_2H_4/{\mu}g$ of Chl-${\alpha}$/hr respectively. Carotenoid : Chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ ratio of four mat samples collected from Kharkunda, Suryakunda, Dudhkunda and bathing pool are 2.45, 1.60, 1.48, and 1.34, respectively. Higher value of Carotenoid : Chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ ratio coincided with higher temperature.
An experiment has been performed using a facility, which simulates the safety depressurization system (SDS) and in-containment refueling water storage tank (IRWST) of APR1400, an advanced PWR being developed in Korea, to investigate the dynamic load resulting from the blowdown of steam from a steam generator through a sparser. The influence of the key parameters, such as air mass, steam pressure, submergence, valve opening time, and pool temperature, on frequency and peak toads was investigated. The blowdown phenomenon was analyzed to find out the real cause of the initiation of bubble oscillation and discrepancy in frequencies between the experiment and calculation by conventional equation for bubble oscillation. The cause of significant damping was discussed and is presumed to be the highly tortuous flow path around bubble. The Rayleigh-Plesset equation, which is modified by introducing method of image, reasonably reproduces the bubble oscillation in a confined tank. Right after the completion of air discharge the steam discharge immediately follows and it condenses abruptly to provide low-pressure pocket. It may contribute to the negative maximum being greater than positive maximum. The subsequently discharging steam does not play as at the driving force anymore.
RELAP5/MOD3.2 was modified to perform the thermal-hydraulic safety analysis for HANARO transients. Several aspects of RELAP5/MOD3.2 were modified or replaced by new features to properly simulate the unique HANARO characteristics such as the finned fuel element, the cooling mechanisms by both plate type heat exchanger and the natural circulation. Especially, the heat transfer packages were modified to be more appropriate for the safety analysis and the heat transfer models were developed for the plate type heat exchanger as well as natural circulation through the pool water. This modified version of RELAP5/MOD3.2 is renamed as RELAP5/HANARO. The thermal-hydraulic simulations of the single fuel pin test and plate type heat exchanger were peformed to assess the realistic predicting capabilities of RELAP5/HANARO and compared with experimental results and manufacturer's data in this paper. In addition, the natural circulation experiment using the scaled bundle was simulated to validate the capability of RELAP5/HANARO. The simulation results show almost similar trend with experimental data. Therefore, it is proved that RELAP5/HANARO has a confidence to use for the safety analyses of HANARO.
MAAP4 is a computer code that can simulate the response of a light water reactor power plant during severe accident sequences, including actions taken as part of accident management. The code quantitatively predicts the evolution of a severe accident starting from full power conditions given a set of system faults and initiating events through events such as core melt, reactor vessel failure, and containment failure. Furthermore, models are included in the code to represent the actions that could mitigate the accident by in-vessel cooling, external cooling of the reactor pressure vessel, or cooling the debris in containment. A key element tied to using a code like MAAP4 is an uncertainty analysis. The purpose of this paper is to present a MAAP4 based analysis to examine the sensitivity of a key parameter, in this case hydrogen production, to a set of model parameters that are related to a Level 2 PRA analysis. The Level 2 analysis examines those sequences that result in core melting and subsequent reactor pressure vessel failure and its impact on the containment. This paper identifies individual contributors and MAAP4 model parameters that statistically influence hydrogen production. Hydrogen generation was chosen because of its direct relationship to oxidation. With greater oxidation, more heat is added to the core region and relocation (core slump) should occur faster. This, in theory, would lead to shorter failure times and subsequent "hotter" debris pool on the containment floor.
