  • Enhanced tubes are widely used in air-conditioning and process industries. Structural tubes having three-dimensional roughness are well known to be able to significantly enhance pool boiling heat transfer of refrigerants. In this study, five structural enhanced tubes having different fin density, fin height, and fin gap width were tested using R-134a. Results showed that the heat transfer coefficient was increased with increased fin density. Within test range, the effect of fin height on pool boiling heat transfer coefficient was insignificant. The heat transfer coefficients of the optimum configuration (2047 fpm, 0.21 mm gap width) tube were lower than those of other commercial enhanced tubes. This might be due to the larger fin gap width of the present enhanced tube.

  • Effects of gap sizes (3.9-44.3 mm) of vertical annuli on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer of water at atmospheric pressure have been obtained experimentally. Through the study, tubes of the closed bottom have been investigated and results are compared with those of a single unconfined tube. According to the results, the annular condition gives much increase in heat transfer coefficient at moderate heat fluxes. The increase is much enhanced 3s the gap size decreases. At the same tube wall superheat (about 3.1 K) the heat transfer coefficient for the least gap size (i.e., 3.9 mm) is more than three times greater than that of the unconfined tube. However, deterioration of heat transfer occurs at high heat flux for confined boiling.

  • Falling-film evaporation experiments for aqueous solution of lithium bromide (LiBr) were performed on a horizontal smooth 19.05-mm-dia copper tube. Average heat transfer coefficients were obtained with varied film Reynolds numbers, system pressures, LiBr concentrations and degrees of wall superheat. Heat transfer coefficients increase with increasing system pressure and decreasing concentration. For degrees of wall superheat, the heat transfer coefficient did not't show the distinct trend. For this experimental ranges, heat transfer coefficients showed maximum values at an optimal film Reynolds number. The results of this work were compared with pool boiling data reported previously, and it was shown that the heat transfer performance is superior to the pool boiling.

  • The effect of oil on convective boiling of R-123 in an enhanced tube bundle is experimentally investigated at $26.7^{\circ}C$ saturation temperature. The enhanced tube had pores (0.23 mm diameter) and connecting gaps (0.07 mm width), which had been optimized using pure R-123. The effects of oil concentration (0 to 5%), heat flux (10 to $40\;kW/m^2$), mass velocity (8 to $26\;kg/m2^s$) and vapor quality are investigated. The oil significantly reduces the bundle boiling heat transfer coefficient. With 1% oil, the reduction is approximately 35%. Further addition of oil further reduces the heat transfer coefficient. The data are also compared with the pool boiling counterpart. The reduction in the heat transfer coefficient is smaller in a bundle (convective boiling) than in a pool (single-tube pool boiling), with larger difference at a smaller heat flux. Similar to pure R-123 case, the effects of mass velocity and vapor quality are negligible for the convective boiling of R-123/oil mixture.

  • The effect of oil on flow boiling of R-123 in a plain tube bundles was experimentally investigated for a range of quality and heat flux. It is shown that the heat transfer coefficient decreased as the oil concentration increased. Comparison with the previous pool boiling data reveals that the reduction of heat transfer coefficient by oil is more pronounced in pool boiling, and the difference increased with the increase of oil concentration and heat flux. Within the experimental range, the variation of mass flux or quality has negligible effect on the heat transfer coefficient.

  • Nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) are measured with HFC32/HFC152a mixture at several compositions. All data are taken at the liquid pool temperature of $7^{\circ}C$, on a horizontal plain square surface of $9.53{\times}9.53$ mm, with heat fluxes of 10 $kW/m^2$ to 100 $kW/m^2$ with an interval of 10 $kW/m^2$, in the increasing order of heat flux. Test results show that the HTCs of these mixtures are up to 45% lower than those of the ideal HTCs calculated by a linear mixing rule with pure fluids' HTCs, due to the mass transfer resistance associated with non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures. Pool boiling data show the deduction in HTCs with an increase in GTD of the mixture. The present mixture data agree well with five well known correlations, within 20% deviation.

  • Effects of gap sizes(3.9 and 15mm) of vertical annuli and the bottom blockage on the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer at atmospheric pressure condition have been examined experimentally, and the results were compared to those with a single tube without confinement. The annular geometry resulted in significant increase in heat transfer coefficient. The effect is much enhanced with the bottom blockage. The heat transfer coefficient for the closed bottom condition is three times greater than the unconfined tube at 30kW/㎡ when the gap size is 3.9mm. However, with further increase of the heat flux much more than 70kW/㎡, all these effects were diminished.

  • A series of data sets for the heat transfer coefficient versus wall superheat has been obtained experimentally using various combinations of tube diameters ($9.7{\sim}25.5mm$), surface roughness ($15.1{\sim}60.9nm$), and tube orientations (horizontal and vertical) to obtain effects of tube diameters on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer for the saturated water at atmospheric pressure. In addition, the results are compared with the well known Cornwell and Houston's correlation for horizontal tubes to identify the deviation of the present experimental data from the correlation and the applicability of it to vertical tubes. The experimental results show that the heat transfer coefficient decreases as the tube diameter increases for both horizontal and vertical tubes and they are in good agreement with the Cornwell and Houston's correlation within ${\pm}20%$ scatter range.

  • Nucleate boiling heat transfer is one of the most important phenomenon in the various industries. Especially, critical heat flux (CHF) refers to the upper limit of the pool boiling heat transfer region. Therefore, many researchers have found that CHF can be significantly increased by adding very small amounts of nanoparticles. In this study, the CHF and heat transfer coefficient were tested under the pool boiling state using copper and multi wall carbon nanotube nanoparticles. The results showed that two different types of nanoparticles deposited on the surface of two specimens made of the same material increased the heat flux in the nanoparticles with high conductivity, and there was no difference in the critical heat flux when the same material nanoparticles were deposited on the two different specimen surfaces.
