  • This study is concerned with the experimental test and numerical analysis of the heat transfer and solidification of the molten metal pool with overlying coolant with boiling. In the test, the metal pool is heated from the bottom surface and coolant is injected onto the molten metal pool. Experiments were performed by changing the test section bottom surface temperature of the metal layer and the coolant injection rate. The two-phase boiling coolant experimental results are compared against the dry test data without coolant or solidification of the molten metal pool, and against the crust formation experiment with subcooled coolant. Also, a numerical analysis is performed to check on the measured data. The numerical program is developed using the enthalpy method, the finite volume method and the SIMPLER algorithm. The experimental results of the heat transfer show general agreement with the calculated values. The present empirical test and numerical results of the heat transfer on the molten metal pool are apparently higher than those without coolant boiling. This is probably because this experiment was performed in concurrence of solidification in the molten metal pool and the rapid boiling of the coolant. The other experiments were performed without coolant boiling and the correlation was developed for the pure molten metal without phase change.

  • Pool boiling heat transfer is widely applied in nuclear engineering fields. The influence of heating surface orientation on the pool boiling heat transfer has received extensive attention. In this study, the heating surface with different roughness was adopted to conduct pool boiling experiments at different inclination angles. Based on the boiling curves and bubble images, the effects of inclination angle on the pool boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux were analyzed. When the inclination angle was bigger than 90°, the bubble size increased with the increase of inclination angle. Both the bubble departure frequency and critical heat flux decreased as the inclination angle increased. The existing theoretical models about pool boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux were compared. From the perspective of bubble agitation model and Hot/Dry spot model, the experimental phenomena could be explained reasonably. The enlargement of bubble not only could enhance the agitation of nearby liquid but also would cause the bubble to stay longer on the heating surface. Consequently, the effect of inclination angle on the pool boiling heat transfer was not conspicuous. With the increase of inclination angle, the rewetting of heating surface became much more difficult. It has negative effect on the critical heat flux. This work provides experimental data basis for heat transfer and CHF performance of pool boiling.

  • Pulse boiling, the unsteady periodic boiling phenomenon appearing in the evaporator of thermosyphons was investigated by many researchers. In the present study investigations were conducted to examine the evolution of flow patterns at the evaporator, and changes in thermodynamic state that each of liquid pool and vapor experiences through 1 cycle of pulse boiling process. For wall and liquid pool the degree of superheat for the onset of nucleation was examined. It revealed that the degree of superheat increased with the increase of pulse period, reaching to 16.5 deg.C and 23 deg.C for liquid pool and evaporator wall respectively at .tau.=80 sec. The data on flow patterns obtained through series of operation tests were plotted in the coordinates of heat flux and vapor pressure to get a regime map. Further this map could be used to figure out the conditions of pulse boiling for a thermosyphon.

  • Recently, many research studies have investigated the enormous critical heat flux (CHF) enhancement caused by nanofluids during pool boiling and flow boiling. One of the main reasons for this enhancement is nanoparticle deposition on the heated surface. However, in real applications, nanofluids create many problems when used as working fluids because of sedimentation and aggregation. Therefore, artificial surfaces on silicon and metal have been developed to create an effect similar to that of nanoparticle deposition. These modified surfaces have proved capable of greatly increasing the CHF during pool boiling, and good results have also been observed during flow boiling. In this study, we demonstrate that the wetting ability of a surface, i.e., wettability, and the liquid spreading ability (hydrophilic surface property), are key parameters for increasing the CHF during both pool and flow boiling. We also demonstrate that when the fuel surface in nuclear power plants is modified in a similar manner, it has the same effect, producing a large CHF enhancement.

  • This paper presents results of experimental studies on the heat transfer and solidification of the molten metal pool with overlying coolant with boiling. The metal pool is heated from the bottom surface and coolant is injected onto the molten metal pool. As a result, the crust, which is a solidified layer, may form at the top of the molten metal pool. Heat transfer is accomplished by a conjugate mechanism, which consists of the natural convection of the molten metal pool, the conduction in the crust layer and the convective boiling heat transfer in the coolant. This work examines the crust formation and the heat transfer rate on the molten metal pool with boiling coolant. The simulant molten pool material is tin (Sn) with the melting temperature of 232$^{\circ}C$. Demineralized water is used as the working coolant. The crust layer thickness was ostensibly varied by the heated bottom surface temperature of the test section, but not much affected by the coolant injection rate. The correlation beかeon the Nusselt number and the Rayleigh number in the molten metal Pool region of this study is compared against the crust formation experiment without coolant boiling and the literature correlations. The present experimental results are higher than those from the experiment without coolant boiling, but show general agreement with the Eckert correlation, with some deviations in the high and low ends of the Rayleigh number. This discrepancy is currently attributed to concurrent rapid boiling of the coolant on top of the metal layer.

  • CHF characteristics of nano- fluids were investigated with different volumetric concentrations of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Pool boiling experiments indicated that the application of nano-fluids, instead of pure water, as a cooling liquid significantly increased the CHF. SEM (scanning electron microscope) observations subsequent to the pool boiling experiments revealed that nanoparticles were coated on the heating surface during pool boiling of nano-fluids. In order to investigate the roles of nanoparticles in CHF enhancement ofb nano-fluids, pool boiling experiments were performed using (a) a nanoparticle-coated heater, prepared by pool boiling of nano-fluids, immersed in pure water and (b) a nanoparticle-coated heater immersed in nano-fluids. The results demonstrated two different roles of nanoparticles in CHF enhancement using nano-fluids: the effect of nanoparticles coated on the heater surface and the effect of nanoparticles suspended in nano- fluids.

  • The effect of hysteresis in saturated pool boiling of water from stainless-steel surfaces has been investigated experimentally. Several sets of test sections of different surface conditions, geometries, orientations, diameters, lengths, and water types were tested at atmospheric pressure. The experimental results show that hysteresis effects in pool boiling heat transfer are not significant, but some appreciable trends are observed in accordance with parameters change. At higher heat flux regions, the curve for heat flux decrease is shifted to the left side of the curve for heat flux increase. To clarify hysteresis in pool boiling and to give some improvement on published correlations, four empirical correlations are obtained in terms of tube diameter, surface roughness, and tube wall superheat.

  • Pool boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux (CHF) of water-based nanofluids with alumina and titania nanoparticles of 0.01% by volume were investigated on a disk heater at saturated and atmospheric conditions. The experimental results showed that the boiling in nanofluids caused the considerable increase in CHF on the flat surface heater. It was revealed by visualization of the heater surface subsequent to the boiling experiments that a major amount of nanoparticles deposited on the surface during the boiling process. Pool boiling of pure water on the surface modified by such nanoparticle deposition resulted in the same CHF increases as what boiling nanofluids, thus suggesting the CHF enhancement in nanofluids was an effect of the surface modification through the nanoparticle deposition during nanofluid boiling. Possible reasons for CHF enhancement in pool boiling of nanofluids are discussed with surface property changes caused by the nanoparticle deposition.

  • The effects on pool boiling heat transfer of aqueous solutions of boric acid ($H_3BO_3$) and sodium chloride (NaCl) as working fluids have been studied. Borated and NaCl water were prepared by dissolving 0.5~5% volume concentration of boric acid and NaCl in distilled-deionized water. The pool boiling tests were conducted using $1{\times}1\;cm^2$ flat heaters at 1 atm. The critical heat flux (CHF) dramatically increased compared to boiling pure water. At the end of boiling tests it was observed that particles of boric acid and NaCl had deposited and formed a coating on the heater surface. The CHF enhancement and surface modification during boiling tests were very similar to those obtained from boiling with nanofluids. Additional experiments were carried out to investigate the reliability of the additives deposition in pure water. The boric acid and NaCl coatings disappeared after repeated boiling tests on the same surface due to the soluble nature of the coatings, thus CHF enhancement no longer existed. These results demonstrate that not only insoluble nanoparticles but also soluble salts can be deposited during boiling process and the deposited layer is solely responsible for significant CHF enhancement.

  • A recently developed new technique for measuring the fraction of wetted area has applied to pool boiling of water. The basis of the new applied technique of ultrasonic makes use of the reflection of ultrasonic from the vapour surface to measure the fraction of wetted area values. The results are the measured fraction of wetted area values in nucleate and transition boiling and the pool boiling curve for water under steady state conditions. The measurement of this paper shows a fraction of wetted areaf around 0.98 at the critical heat flux for water.
