  • The quality of urban environment where large population reside is becoming more vitally important than ever. Recently the city of Seoul has launched a 'green city' program converting number of city owned lots into urban parks. In this study, we first investigate four recently opened city parks with water ponds in Seoul. This study then classify these parks according to their respective designs, particularly addressing design and environmental impacts by water features. From these exercises, we derive the following interim findings: 1. Design patterns of waterscape is changing. 2. Water in the city park is a major design feature. 3. Design methodology for city parks must be studied further.

  • Until now, inflow has been handled an independent log-normal random variable in the problem of planning the long-term operation of a multi-reservoir hydrothermal electric power generation system. This paper introduces the detail study for making rule curve by applying weekly time interval for handling inflows. The hydro system model consists of a set of reservoirs and ponds. Thermal units are modeld by one equivalent thermal unit. Objective is minimizing the total cost that the summation of the fuel cost of equivalent thermal unit at each time interval. For optimization, stochastic dynamic programming(SDP) algorithm using successive approximations is used.

  • Phosphorus is an essential element for growth and metabolism in fish. However high levels of phosphorus in the feed can lead to poor water quality of pond, and can also be a potential source of pollution, when pond water is released to the environment. In this study phosphorus supplemented diets containing 0.0, 0.9 or 1.9% of (dicalcium) phosphate were offered to channel catfish and changes in water quality of ponds and phosphorus levels in fish were measured. Higher level of (1.9%) supplementation of phosphorus in diet resulted in higher concentration of T-P and SRP in pond waters. Also it produced negative effects on fish production by lowering feed coefficient and rate of increment in body weight. Surplus phosphorus can affect fish growth and water quality of pond.

  • In recent years, we frequently observed missmatched pairs between male Asian toads, Bufo gargarizans, and bullfrogs, Rana catesbeiana, at the toad breeding ponds, where scramble competition for mating occurred among the male toads. Thus, we performed two-choice experiments to investigate recognition ability of mates and species in male toads. The test males did not discriminate sexes, but the clasped stimulus males immediately produced release calls and stopped it while the clasped stimulus female did not. In addition, the test male toads did not discriminate reproductive state of females and even species. However, male toads chose larger individuals. The present results indicate that the main reason of missmatched amplexus by the male toads is due to 1) the lack of recognition cues of conspecifics, 2) the lack of communication tools like release calls, and 3) the larger size of bullfrogs than male toads themselves.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the basic perception of Kleingarten house planning of Jeonbuk area. The survey method was used for data collection. The major finding were as follows: 1) Almost all respondents have a very positive attitude the participant of Kleingarten. Many respondents wanted the cheapest price for the Kleingarten rental fee and for the travel time between their home and Kleingarten to be under an hour. 2) Two different size of 45 and 66 $m^2$ were preferable for the house floor plans. The most preferable floor plan type chosen by the respondents was a house design with a terrace and the elderly householders especially preferred a house floor plan with an LDK design. 54.3 per cent respondents liked the log house and 93.3 per cent respondents liked the eco-friendly building materials such as wood, earth (Korean natural earth: whangto), and adobe bricks etc. 3) There were more needs for useful facilities such as a pergola, a grassy lawn, small ponds, a playground for the childrens, patio table settings, etc.

  • We have collected a great Quantity of leeches, comprising five species, from six different ponds and rice paddies in the south-western part of Korea. The leeches were cultured in our laboratory with special interests on the blood-suckers (Himdo nipponial in fresh water supplemented with essential ions. A number of experiments was carried out with biomedical aspects. We have observed traits which can be used as a laboratory animal. The paper reports general features obsenred from leeches with preliminary study results carried in culture systems. The paper also describes study aspects of leeches in biochemistry, neurology and developmental biology.

  • The rosters collected loom various keshwater habitats, such as rivers, steams, lakes, ponds, and rice paddies at twenty-four different sites in Korea were investigated. Eleven species and/or subspecies in three families of monogonont freshwater rotifers were identified, of which two species, Notholco marina and Lecane (Monostyra) stenroosi stenroosi were new to Korea. A key is presented for the twenty-two Korean species and/or subspecies which have been described by the previous taxonomic reports and the present study.

  • The number of features related to morphology, distribution of habitats, biotopical distribution, and biology of species reproduction (within the territory described) of the Mongolian toad (Bufo raddei) which inhabits western shore of Lake Baikal were described. In this paper on the basis of the results of field studies in 1997, 2001, 2005, 2012 the original data on reproduction and chemical composition of the spawning ponds, used by frogs for reproduction, is presented. It was found that reproduction of species occurs in the salty steppe (14-45 g/L) lakes in the west part of the Baikal basin.

  • There is not enough excavation examples and bibliographies to study the garden of Baek Je as the ancient landscape architecture style This study was to seek the ancient Japanese gardens which had a great concern with Baek Je in order to surmount the limitation in the study on Baek Je's Gardens . As the result, there were founded the three ponds and one garden facility in ancient Japanese gardens focused on Aska region. The traces of the landscape architecture of Baek Je style were founded in the pond form and rubble masonry and such like. This study was the first trial to the study on the garden of Baek Je style in Japan And excavation examples which had a concern with Baek Je will be more in Japan. So more study is needed.

  • A model combining multi-dimensional discretized population balance equations with a computational fluid dynamics simulation (CFD-DPBE model) was developed and applied to simulate turbulent flocculation and sedimentation processes in sediment retention basins. Computation fluid dynamics and the discretized population balance equations were solved to generate steady state flow field data and simulate flocculation and sedimentation processes in a sequential manner. Up-to-date numerical algorithms, such as operator splitting and LeVeque flux-corrected upwind schemes, were applied to cope with the computational demands caused by complexity and nonlinearity of the population balance equations and the instability caused by advection-dominated transport. In a modeling and simulation study with a two-dimensional simplified pond system, applicability of the CFD-DPBE model was demonstrated by tracking mass balances and floc size evolutions and by examining particle/floc size and solid concentration distributions. Thus, the CFD-DPBE model may be used as a valuable simulation tool for natural and engineered flocculation and sedimentation systems as well as for flocculant-aided sediment retention ponds.
