Four different diisocyanates (IPDI; isophorone diisocyanate, HDI; hexamethylene diisocyanate, HMDI; dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate, and XDI; m-xylylene diisocyanate) were used to prepare polyurethane gel-coats, and the weatherabilities, physical properties, and surface characteristics of the gel-coats were investigated with respect to the chemical structure of the diisocyanates. The weathering test results indicated that all of the diisocyanates used in this study were suitable for use in the preparation of the polyurethane gel-coat. However, the set-to-touch times and physical properties of the polyurethane gel-coat indicated that the cycloaliphatic diisocyanate (IPDI and HMDI) were ideal for the preparation of polyurethane gel-coats.
Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is an important inorganic-organic hybrid material with a three-dimensional structure. Polyurethane (PU) is a widely applied polymer that has versatile properties with the change of two phase structure. When POSS is incorporated into PU by physical or chemical methods, many properties can be greatly improved, such as mechanical properties, thermal stability, biodegradation resistance, and water resistance. This paper reviews the recent progress in preparation, structure, and performance of POSS-modified polyurethane from the viewpoint of physical blending and chemical modification.
Effects of catalysts on network structure, hard segment length and distribution of polyurethane foams in the absence of catalysts were investigated. CFC free all MDI-based poly urethane foams were prepared from poly(ethylene adipate)glycol, 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and water. Amino catalysts used were 1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane(DABCO), N, N,N',N'-tetramethyl--hexane-1,6-diamine(MR), bis(2-methylamino ethyl)ether(ET), 1,8-diazabicyclo-[5,4,0]-undecene-7(DBU). Dibutyltindilaurate(DBTL) as control was also used. Hard segment components of polyurethane foams were obtained by a selective degradation of polyester chains with 0.01N KOH-methanol solution. The PUFs with DBU catalyst contained more amount of isocyanurate components than other PUFs. On the other hand, the PUFs with ET, MR, DBTL catalysts contained more amount of allophanate and biuret component than the other PUFs.
Polyurethane microcapsules were synthesized by interfacial polymerization in an aqueous poly(ethylene glycol) dispersion with ethylenediamine as chain extender of toluene diisocyanate in perfume oil using poly(vinyl alcohol) as the stabilizing agent. The effect of chemical structure on the average particle size and distributions, morphologies, and thermal properties to design microcapsules for the sustained release system was investigated. It came to be known that polyurethane microcapsules with ethylene diamine as chain extender had a rounder, more permeable and controlled release membranes. And the release test of polyurethane microcapsules with different soft segment content was done to certify the effect of long methylene chain. According to the higher molecular weight of polyether polyol, the release rate of microencapsulated disperse dye molecular was faster.
Spin-coated waterborne polyurethane to protect glass surface from environmental attacks was cured by using microwave heating. The effect of microwave heating on the reaction kinetics, chemical durability, and transmittance of polyurethane was investigated. In comparison to the conventional heating the results show that the microwave heating substantially accelerates the curing process of waterborne polyurethane and the total time for the completion of the reaction is only 1/7 of that in the conventional process. The microwave cured sample showed an excellent caustic resistance compared to conventional cured one. It means that microwave heating produces dense structure during curing process. The dense structure does not affect to the transmittance in the visible region.
In order to investigate the characteristics of the gradient fluorinated polyacrylate and polyurethane latex blend films, the fluorinated polyacrylate emulsion and the polyurethane emulsion were synthesized, and then the both emulsions were blended at a series of ratios. The effects of content of the fluorinated polyacrylate on the gradient structure and surface property of the blended films were assessed by AFM, XPS, SEM-EDX and surface free energy measurements. It appeared that, while the content of the fluorinated polyacrylate latex was up to 30%, the fluorinated polyacrylate particles were selectively gathered on the film-air (F-A) and film-glass (F-G) interfaces at room temperature. When the content of the fluorinated polyacrylate was under 30%, the gradient structure of fluorinated component was not evident. The further increasing of fluorinated polyacrylate in the mixed system facilitated the formation and enlargement of gradient structure, but the adhesion of film decreased a little.

Used polyurethane was chemically degraded by treatments with flame retardants such as tris(3-chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP), triethyl phosphate (TEP), and trimethyl phosphate (TMP). The structure of degraded products (DEP) was analyzed by FT-IR and P-NMR and it turned out to be phosphorus containing oligourethanes. Rigid polyurethane foam was produced by using the degraded products (DEP) as flame retardants. The flammability of recycled rigid polyurethane was investigated. The recycled polyurethane shows a reduced flammability over virgin polyurethane. In order to evaluate flame retardant properties of the recycled polyurethane foams with various amounts of DEP, the combustion parameters of the foam was measured by a cone calorimeter. Scanning electron micrograph of recycled PU shows the same uniform cell morphology as virgin PU.

This paper presents the actuation performance of a conducting shape memory polyurethane (CSMPU) actuator. We introduced a concept of shape memory polyurethane activated by electric power while conventional shape memory polyurethanes are activated by external heat source. A conducting shape memory polyurethane actuator was manufactured by adding cabon nano-tube to conventional shape memory polyurethane. The main problem of the previous CSMPU was bad dispersion of carbon nano-tubes in polyurethane. In this paper, we have tried to find manufacturing method to solve the dispersion problem. With a lot of elaborative works, we have developed conducting shape memory polyurethane actuator with good electrical performance. The actuation performance of the developed conducting shape memory polyurethane actuator was measured and assessed.
The smoke density and noxious gas for phenol foam and polyurethane foam were measured according to test methods in ASTM E 662 and KS F 2271. It was observed that phenol foam had the possibility of application for sandwich panel and board compared with polyurethane foam. In the experimental results, phenol foam showed comparatively excellent property than polyurethane foam in smoke density and noxious gas. The polyurethane foam showed comparatively high smoke density and didn't meet the evaluation standard of noxious gas in KS F 2271. From the experimental results of smoke density and noxious gas, it can be said that phenol foam has both comparatively good safety and high possibility of application than polyurethane foam in the building fire of sandwich panel structure because of lower smoke density and noxious gas.

We attempted to fabricate polyurethane derivatives (PU-CN, PU-DCM) LB films by using LB method. Also, we investigated the monolayer behavior at the air-water interface by surface pressure-area (${\pi}$-A) isotherms. The surface morphologies and the physicochemical properties of LB films were investigated by atomic force microscopy(AFM) and UV-vis spectroscopy, respectively. And, the electrical properties of polyurethane derivatives LB films were investigated by using the conductivity and the dielectric constant. In the surface morphologies, physicochemical and electrical properties of polyurethane derivatives LB films, the properties is different as to the polyurethane derivatives, it is considered that this phenomena could be described by the difference of lumophore pendant which was adhered at PU main chain.
