Effects of Polyurethane Coated Urea Supplement on In vitro Ruminal Fermentation, Ammonia Release Dynamics and Lactating Performance of Holstein Dairy Cows Fed a Steam-flaked Corn-based Diet

  • Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of polyurethane coated urea on in vitro ruminal fermentation, ammonia release dynamics and lactating performance of Holstein dairy cows fed a steam-flaked corn-based diet. In Exp. 1, a dual-flow continuous culture was run to investigate the effect of polyurethane coated urea on nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation parameters and microbial efficiency. Three treatment diets with isonitrogenous contents (13.0% CP) were prepared: i) feedgrade urea (FGU) diet; ii) polyurethane coated urea (PCU) diet; and iii) isolated soy protein (ISP) diet. Each of the diets consisted of 40% steam-flaked corn meal, 58.5% forages and 1.5% different sources of nitrogen. PCU and FGU diets had significantly lower digestibility of NDF and ADF (p<0.01) than the ISP diet. Nitrogen source had no significant effect (p = 0.62) on CP digestibility. The microbial efficiency (expressed as grams of microbial N/kg organic matter truly digested (OMTD)) in vitro of the PCU diet (13.0 g N/kg OMTD) was significantly higher than the FGU diet (11.3 g N/kg OMTD), but comparable with the ISP diet (14.7 g N/kg OMTD). Exp. 2, an in vitro ruminal fermentation experiment, was conducted to determine the ammonia release dynamics during an 8 h ruminal fermentation. Three treatment diets were based on steam-flaked corn diets commonly fed to lactating cows in China, in which FGU, PCU or soybean meal (SBM) was added to provide 10% of total dietary N. In vitro $NH_3-N$ concentrations were lower (p<0.05) for the PCU diet than the FGU diet, but similar to that for the SBM diet at all time points. In Exp. 3, a lactation trial was performed using 24 lactating Holstein cows to compare the lactating performance and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations when cows were fed PCU, FGU and SBM diets. Cows consuming the PCU diet had approximately 12.8% more (p = 0.02) dietary dry matter intake than those consuming the FGU diet. Cows fed the PCU diet had higher milk protein content (3.16% vs. 2.94%) and lower milk urea nitrogen (MUN) concentration (13.0 mg/dl vs. 14.4 mg/dl) than those fed the FGU diet. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration was significantly lower for cows fed the PCU (16.7 mg/dl) and SBM (16.4 mg/dl) diets than the FGU (18.7 mg/dl) diet. Cows fed the PCU diet had less surplus ruminal N than those fed the FGU diet and produced a comparable lactation performance to the SBM diet, suggesting that polyurethane coated urea can partially substitute soybean meal in the dairy cow diet without impairing lactation performance.

Preparation and Properties of Waterborne Polyurethane-Urea/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Blends for High Water Vapor Permeable Coating Materials

  • High water vapor permeable coating materials were prepared by blending aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution with waterborne polyurethane-urea (WBPU) dispersions synthesized by prepolymer mixing process. Stable WBPU/PVA dispersions were achieved at PVA content below 30 wt%. As the water soluble polymer PVA content increased, the number and density of total micro-pores (tunnel-like/isolated micro-pores) formed after the dissolution of PVA in water increased, and the water vapor permeability of coated Nylon fabric also increased significantly. Using WBPU/water soluble polymer PVA blends as a coating material and then dissolving PVA in water was confirmed to be an effective method to obtain prominent breathable fabrics.

폴리우레탄 폼을 이용한 쥐 일차 간세포의 구상체 배양 (Formation of Spheroids of Adult Rat Primary Hepatocytes in Polyurethane Foam)

  • 본 논문은 급성 간 부전 환자나 간이식 대기상태에 있는 환자에 이용하기 위한 체외 간 보조장치를 개발하기 위한 기초 실험에 관한 것이다. 밀도 33kg/m, 평균 직경 500um, 60-70%의 window를 가진 폴리우레탄 폼을 15% NCO-프리폴리머로 제조하였다. 폴리우레탄 폼에 접종된 간세포는 3일 후에 거의 모두 100-150um 크기의 구상체를 형성하였다. BSA 코팅을 한 폴리우레탄 폼은 BSA로 코팅하지 않은 폴리우레탄 폼보다 간세포 구상체 형성 시간이 더 짧았다. 폴리우레탄 폼에 형성된 간세포 구상체의 간 기능을 증명하기 위하여 암모니아 제거율과 요소 및 알부민 분비율을 측정하였다. 폴리우레탄 폼은 간세포 구상체 배양에 적합하며, 폴리우레탄 폼 내에서의 간세포 구상체 배양은 체외 간 보조장치로의 개발 가능성이 높다.

  • 자기치유 소재를 이용하여 강판을 코팅하는 경우, 코팅 소재에 상처가 날 경우 스스로 상처를 치유하여 강판이 부식되는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 하지만 자기치유 과정에는 시간이 소요되며, 따라서 자기치유가 되기 전에 강판의 상처가 부식 될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 가역적인 hindered urea bond(HUB)를 통하여 가교 결합을 형성하면서 동시에 부식 방지제로써 작용하는 DTBEDA를 이용하여 듀얼자기치유 메커니즘을 가지는 코팅 소재를 제조하였다. 또한 제조된 소재를 강판에 코팅하여 의료용 메스와 나노/마이크로 압입시험기를 통하여 스크래치에 대한 자기치유 성능을 확인하였으며, DTBEDA의 내부식성 효과를 전기화학 임피던스 분광법(EIS)을 통하여 분석하였다.

고속액체크로마토그래피를 이용한 이소시아네이트의 동시 정량 (Simultaneous Determination of Isocyanates by High Performance Liquid Chromatography)

  • This study was designed to identify and quantitate airborne isocyanate simultaneously by HPLC. These samples were collected using 1-(2-pyridyl)piperazine(1-2PP) coated glass fiber filter from polyurethane painting works at 8 wood furniture factories in Kimpo and Inchun. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The most suitable mobile phase condition of simultaneously analyzing isocyanates was 0.01 M ammonium acetate buffer ACN(70/30) adjusted to pH 6.2 from the beginning of the analysis to 20 min and 0.01 M ammonium acetate buffer/ACN(50/50) adjusted to pH 6.2 from 21 min to 40 min using the gradient mode. The peaks of isocyanates were able to obtain within 30 min. 2. The recovery efficiencies for 2,6-TDI, 2,4-TDI, HDI and MDI urea derivates spiked at the target concentration on coated glass fiber tillers were 91.00, 93.42, 91.31 and 94.21 %, respectively. 3. The qualitative analysis of the isocyanates samples from polyurethane spray painting works in wood furnture factories identified Ihree isocyanates, 2,6-TDI, 2,4-TDI and MOI. And their concentration ranges were 0-312.6, 0-56.3 and $0-62.1{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. A disadvantage of using the colorimetric method for isocyanate analysis is its inability of separating isocyanates. This study identified such three isocyanates as 2,6-TDI, 2,4-TDI and MDI from polyurethane spray painting works in wood furniture factories. These isocyanates were successfully quantitated by HPLC by modifying the mobile phase condition and switching to gradient mode.

Preparation and Application of Polyurethane-urea Microcapsules Containing Phase Change Materials

  • For thermal adaptable fabrics, the polyurethane-urea microcapsules containing phase-change materials (PCMs: hexadecane, octadecane and eicosane) were successfully synthesized by interfacial polycondensation using 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG400)/ethylene diamine (EDA) as shell monomers and nonionic surfactant NP-12 in an emulsion system under stirring rates of $3,000{\sim}13,000$ rpm. The mean particle size of microcapsule decreased significantly with increasing the stirring rate up to 11,000 rpm, and then leveled off. The mean particle size increased with increasing the content and molecular weight (eicosane > octadecane > hexadecane) of PCMs at the same stirring rate. The mean particle sizes of microcapsules were found to decrease with increasing the NP-12 content up to 1.5 wt%, and thereafter increased a little. It was found that the melting temperature ($T_m$) and crystallization temperature ($T_c$) of three kinds of encapsulated PCMs and their enthalpy changes (${\Delta}H_m,{\Delta}H_c$) increased with increasing PCM contents. The encapsulation efficiencies (Ee) of hexadecane microcapsule linearly increased with increasing the content of hexadecane. It was found that the stable microcapsule containing 50 wt% of hexadecane could be obtained in this study. However, Ee of octadecane and eicosane microcapsules increased with increasing PCM's contents up to 40 wt%, and then decreased a little. By considering the encapsulation efficiency, it was found that the maximum/optimum contents of octadecane and eicosane microcapsules were about 40 wt%. By the dynamic thermal performance test, it was found that the maximum buffering levels of Nylon fabrics coated with hexadecane, octadecane, and eicosane microcapsules were about $-2.4/+2.9^{\circ}C,\;-3.6/+3.6^{\circ}C\;and\;-4.0/+4.7^{\circ}C$, respectively.
