Polystyrene (PS) nanospheres with a monodisperse size distribution, positive surface charge and high molecular weight were successfully synthesized using various types of metal stearates in an aqueous NaOH medium. The diameter of the PS nanospheres was controlled from 80 to 450 nm by changing the type of metal stearate. It was also found that controlling the NaOH concentration in solution was important for producing monodisperse PS nanoparticles. The nanospheres prepared with zinc stearate possessed a positive surface charge of 60 to 80 mV, confirming that PS particles were functionalized with metal stearates. It is believed that the metal stearates provide PS particles with not only colloidal stability but also a positive surface charge.
We have developed a nonlithographic patterning technique using polystyrene nanoparticles to form nanonet channel structures which is promising for high-performance TFT applications. Nanoparticles assisted patterning (NAP) is a technique to form uniform nano-patterns by applying lift-off and dry etch process. Oxygen plasma treatment was used to control the diameters of nanonet hole size to realize a branch width down to 100 nm. NAP technology can be very promising to fabricate nanonet structure with advantages of lower manufacturing cost and large-area patterning capability.
Well-defined, monodispersed hollow ZnO nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a facile one-pot solution method at room temperature. Hollow ZnO nanoparticles were fabricated using polystyrene nanoparticles as seed particles. The removal of core particles via solvent extraction yields hollow nanoparticles. The structures and morphologies of the obtained products were characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The formation mechanism of the hollow structure of the ZnO nanoparticles was also investigated. The technique developed here is expected to be useful in the preparation other metal oxides and hollow architectures.
Isolation and separation of biological nanoparticles, such as cells and extracellular vesicles, are important techniques for their characterization. Dielectrophoresis (DEP) based on microfluidic chips is an effective method to isolate and separate the nanoparticles. However, the electrodes of the DEP chips are electrolyzed by the electrical signals applied to the nanoparticles. Thus, the isolation/separation efficiency of the nanoparticles is reduced considerably. Through this study, we developed a microfluidic DEP chip for reliable isolation/ separation of nanoparticles and developed a passivation technique for the protection of the DEP chip electrodes. The electrode passivation process was designed using a hydrogel and the stability of the hydrogel passivation layer was verified. The fabricated DEP chip and the proposed passivation technique were used for the collection and dispersion of the fluorescent polystyrene nanoparticles. The proposed chip and the technique for isolation and separation of nanoparticles can be leveraged in various bioelectronic applications.
This paper reports a novel immunoassay method using superparamagnetic nanoparticles and an enhanced magnetic field gradient for the detection of protein in a microfluidic device. We use superparamagnetic nanoparticles as a label and fluorescent polystyrene beads as a solid support. Based on this platform, magnetic force-based microfluidic immunoassay is successfully applied to analyze the concentration of IgG as model analytes. In addition, we present ferromagnetic microstructure connected with a permanent magnet to increase magnetic flux density gradient (dB/dx, ${\sim}10^{4}$ T/m), which makes limit of detection reduced. The detection limit is reduced to about 1 pg/mL.
In recent years, there has been a remarkable progress in the development of the fiber optic sensors for the detection of various chemicals. Fiber optic sensors have the advantages of very small size, flexibility and low cost. The fiber optic sensors employing different optical or spectroscopic phenomena have been reported such as bulk absorption, optical reflectance, fluoresces and energy transfer. In this study, the effect of nanoparticle concentration in liquid upon light absorption and scattering was studied using extrinsic fiber optic method. For the evaluation, we used Red (650 nm) and Blue (430 nm) light sources which are coupled through the standard cuvette using optical fiber to detector. The experiments are carried out with Polystyrene latex (400 - 800 nm), and Silicon (35 - 110 nm) nanoparticles suspended in Isopropanol. Differences in light absorption and scattering depending on nanoparticle concentration and type are discussed. This method may be useful to study nanoparticles properties for various application and research.
It is not easy to detect nano-sized airborne particles (< 100 nm in diameter) in air. Therefore, the condensation of the nanoparticles alongside of the size-classification is needed for their detection. This paper proposes a hybrid (aerodynamic+electrical) particle classification and condensation device using a micro virtual impactor (${\mu}VI$). The ${\mu}VI$ can classify the nanoparticles according to their size and condense the number concentration of nanoparticles interested. Firstly, the classification efficiency of the ${\mu}VI$ was measured for the particles, polystyrene latex (PSL), ranging from 80 to 250 nm in diameter. Secondly, the nanoparticles, NaCl of 50 nm in diameter, were condensed by 4 times higher. In consequence, the output signal was amplified by 4 times (before condensation: 4 fA, after condensation: 16 fA). It is expected that the proposed device will facilitate the detection of nanoparticles.
In this research, nanocomposite layers consisting of poly (3,4,-ethylene dioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT:PSS) and CuO nanoparticles were investigated as hole transport layers in organic solar cells based on poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the electron donor and (6.6) phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as the electron acceptor. The addition of CuO nanoparticles to PEDOT:PSS layer improved the solar cell performance with 0.5% CuO nanoparticle concentration. At optimized concentration, CuO mixed PEDOT:PSS films had good electrical ($4.131{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$) and optical (transmittance > 90%) properties for using hole transporting layer. We investigated that improved solar cell performance with CuO nanoparticles mixed PEDOT:PSS films.
