  • In the course of the study program of benthic invertebrates of the coastal shelves of Korean Peninsula, the shallow -water chitons (Mollusca : Polyplacophora) are studied based on the collections of the Korea Ocean Research and Development Insitute made between 1980 and 1983. A total of sixteen species belonging to the Orders Lepidopleurina and Ischnochitonina , are now recognized from Korean waters,of which the following two species are newly recorded ; Leptochiton (Leptochiton ) rugatus (Carpenter in Pilsbry), and Mopalia schrencki Thiele. Illustrations, description and complte synonymies are provided for each of them.

  • 한국산 가시군부속 (Acanthochitona)의 좀털군부(A. achates),참털군부 (A. circellata), 털군부(A.defilippii)및 애기털군부(A. rubrolineata)등 4종의 정소를 재료로 warm drying mithod를 통해 염색체를 관찰하였다.

  • The genus Callochiton Gray, 1847 is small to medium sized chiton (up to $55{\times}36mm$ in size) and includes approximately 30 species worldwide, most of which are found on hard substrata in subtidal zone. To date, only three species of Callochiton Gray, 1847 have been reported in Japan. In this study, we found C. foveolatus(Is. Taki, 1938) as first record of the family Callochitonidae Plate, 1901 in Korea and its morphological features were described and compared with other northwestern Pacific species. In addition, the partial fragment of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences of C. foveolatus was determined as DNA barcoding record and compared with other congeneric species.

  • Protochitonidae Ashby, 1925 is a family of small to medium sized chitons that includes a single fossil genus and two extant genera. Of the two extant genera, Deshayesiella Carpenter in Dall, 1879 contains 5 described species. Although most Deshayesiella species are known to be found in deep sea habitats(over 100 m), D. curvata (Carpenter in Pilsbry, 1892) is found from shallow waters(1-20 m). In this study, we provide details of microstructure of shell and radula characters using scanning electron microscopy and morphological features of D. curvata, and its partial sequence of mitochondrial DNA cox1 gene as DNA barcode sequence. In addition, we compare morphological differences of D. curvata from other congeneric species.

  • Acanthochitonidae Pilsbry, 1893 is one of the chiton families characterized by 9 pairs of sutural tufts on a well-expanded girdle that overgrows plates. It is found in intertidal and subtidal zones worldwide. Of its eight genera, only two have been previously reported in South Korea: Acanthochitona Gray, 1821 and Notoplax H. Adams, 1862. Here we report Leptoplax doederleini (Thiele, 1909) as the first record of the genus Leptoplax in South Korea and describe and compare its morphological features with N. kaasi Hong, Dell'Angelo and Van Belle, 1990. In addition, we provide the partial sequence of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene as a DNA barcode sequence record.

  • This catalogue is the result of a four-year survey of the mollusks of Jeju Island, the southernmost island in the Republic of Korea. Forty-eight survey stations were visited, with a total of 82 specific localities being sampled. Literature records were also obtained. Local and world distribution of each species is included. This survey reports a total of 1,072 mollusk species and subspecies; 1,015 marine and 57 land and freshwater. There are 812 gastropods, of which 755 are either entirely marine or have marine affinities. The best represented of the marine families are the Pyramidellidae, Trochidae, and Ovulidae. There are 225 bivalves, none being freshwater species, with the Veneridae, Mytilidae, and Arcidae having the largest number of species. Among the smaller classes there are sixteen Cephalopoda, eleven Polyplacophora, and eight Scaphopoda. Compared to mainland Korea, Jeju Island has a rather small terrestrial mollusk fauna and a depauperate freshwater one, with mainly Palearctic connections. The Helixarionidae and Bradybaenidae are the largest terrestrial families. The marine faunal affinities with the neighboring Japonic and Indo-West Pacific provinces are also discussed, revealing that this island's mollusk fauna is a blend of warm-temperate and subtropical-tropical species.
