  • DBR (distributed Bragg reflectors) PSi (porous silicon) composite films displaying dual optical properties, both optical reflectivity and photoluminescence had been developed. DBR PSi samples were prepared by electrochemical etch of heavily doped $p^{++}-type$ silicon wafers (boron doped, polished on the <100> face, resistivity of $0.8-1.2m{\Omega}-cm$, Siltronix, Inc.). Free-standing DBR PSi films were treated with PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) to produce flexible, stable composite materials in which the PSi matrix is covered with PMMA containing photoluminescent polysiloles. Optical characteristics of DBR PSi/polysilole-impregnated PMMA composite materials exhibit both their photonic reflectivity at 565 nm and photoluminescence at 510 nm, simultaneously. A possible application of this materials will be discussed.

  • One of the current treatment methods for chronic osteomyelitis is removal of the infected and necrotic tissue to reduce the bacterial concentration as much as possible. This is performed concomitantly with antibiotic therapy. Chronic osteomyelitis(C.O.) implies chronic ischemia of the diseased bone. Thus, the treatment for C.O. requires high systemic level of antibiotics. In some cases, however, inherent undesirable adverse effects(for example, nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, and others) may render this course of treatment difficult. Knowing that residual monomers are released from hardened bone cement, installation of antibiotic-impregnated PMMA(polymethyl-methacrylate) beads in situ have been one of treatment methods of C.O. When introduced into the wound, they established an exceedingly high level of local antibiotics for prolonged period without high systemic level of antibiotics. We experienced favorable results with vancomycin-impregnated PMMA beads for the treatment of C.O. of the mandible. So, we report it with literature reviews.

  • Purpose: The advantages of ocular proton therapy are that it spares the optic nerve and delivers the minimal dose to normal surrounding tissues. In this study, it developed a solid eye phantom that enabled us to perform quality assurance (QA) to verify the dose and beam range for passive single scattering proton therapy using a single phantom. For this purpose, a new solid eye phantom with a polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) wedge was developed using film dosimetry and an ionization chamber. Methods: The typical beam shape used for eye treatment is approximately 3 cm in diameter and the beam range is below 5 cm. Since proton therapy has a problem with beam range uncertainty due to differences in the stopping power of normal tissue, bone, air, etc, the beam range should be confirmed before treatment. A film can be placed on the slope of the phantom to evaluate the Spread-out Bragg Peak based on the water equivalent thickness value of PMMA on the film. In addition, an ionization chamber (Pin-point, PTW 31014) can be inserted into a hole in the phantom to measure the absolute dose. Results: The eye phantom was used for independent patient-specific QA. The differences in the output and beam range between the measurement and the planned treatment were less than 1.5% and 0.1 cm, respectively. Conclusions: An eye phantom was developed and the performance was successfully validated. The phantom can be employed to verify the output and beam range for ocular proton therapy.

  • PURPOSE. To evaluate the effect of various metal oxides on impact strength (IS), fracture toughness (FT), water sorption (WSP) and solubility (WSL) of heat-cured acrylic resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Fifty acrylic resin specimens were fabricated for each test and divided into five groups. Group 1 was the control group and Group 2, 3, 4 and 5 (test groups) included a mixture of 1% $TiO_2$ and 1% $ZrO_2$, 2% $Al_2O_3$, 2% $TiO_2$, and 2% $ZrO_2$ by volume, respectively. Rectangular unnotched specimens ($50mm{\times}6.0mm{\times}4.0mm$) were fabricated and drop-tower impact testing machine was used to determine IS. For FT, compact test specimens were fabricated and tests were done with a universal testing machine with a cross-head speed of 5 mm/min. For WSP and WSL, disc-shaped specimens were fabricated and tests were performed in accordance to ISO 1567. ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for statistical analyses. RESULTS. IS and FT values were significantly higher and WSP and WSL values were significantly lower in test groups than in control group (P<.05). Group 5 had significantly higher IS and FT values and significantly lower WSP values than other groups (P<.05) and provided 40% and 30% increase in IS and FT, respectively, compared to control group. Significantly lower WSL values were detected for Group 2 and 5 (P<.05). CONCLUSION. Modification of heat-cured acrylic resin with metal oxides, especially with $ZrO_2$, may be useful in preventing denture fractures and undesirable physical changes resulting from oral fluids clinically.

  • The international standard for FT-IR gas analysis of fire effluents in ISO 5660-1 cone calorimeter has been being developed in ISO TC 92. A comparison of the round-robin test of WD 21397 was conducted with six participating laboratories in 2018. The test specimens were PMMA, rigid PU foam board, and PVC flooring. The measurement quantities were the time-to-ignition, peak heat release rate, total heat release, and effective heat of combustion for a cone calorimeter test and peak gas concentration, gas generation, and gas yield for FT-IR gas analysis. No outliers were identified. For the cone calorimeter quantities, the repeatability and reproducibility were 1.5% and 9.8%, respectively. For FT-IR gas analysis, the repeatability and reproducibility was 12.9% and 27.9%, respectively.

  • In this study, a simple post-reconstruction dual-energy computed tomography (CT) method is proposed. A dual-energy CT algorithm for monochromatic x-rays was adopted and applied to the dual-energy CT of polychromatic x-rays by assigning a representative mono-energy. The accuracy of algorithm implementation was tested with mathematical phantoms. To test the sensitivity of this algorithm to the inaccuracy of representative energy value in energy values, a simulation study was performed with mathematical phantom. To represent a polychromatic x-ray energy spectrum with a single-energy, mean energy and equivalent energy were used, and the results were compared. The feasibility of the proposed method was experimentally tested with two different micro-CTs and a test phantom made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), water, and graphite. The dual-energy calculations were carried out with CT images of all possible energy pairs among 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 kVp. The effective atomic number and the electron density values obtained from the proposed method were compared with theoretical values. The results showed that, except the errors in the effective atomic number of graphite, most of the errors were less than 10 % for both CT scanners, and for the combination of 60 kVp and 70 kVp, errors less than 6.0 % could be achieved with a Polaris 90 CT. The proposed method shows simplicity of calibration, demonstrating its practicality and feasibility for use with a general polychromatic CT.

  • Nowadays, TFT-LCD is widely used as display unit of many digital devices. And, the backlight unit(BLU) is used as a light source of TFT-LCD module. In the backlight unit, the most important component is a light guide, which guides the input light to the TFT-LCD module uniformly. Recently, many researchers have focused on improving the efficiency of BLU by changing the design and structure of a light guide. In the present paper, a series of simulation was performed to find the optimal luminance distribution of emanated light from the given geometry as the first step. From the results of simulations for the light guide with given V-groove pattern, the emanated light from it is mostly affected by the groove angle. In the case of acute angle, about 74 degrees was found as optimal angle to satisfy the restrictions of angular luminance distribution, FWHM, the maximum luminance, etc. However, as far as the average luminance value was concerned, the case of 120 degrees(abtuse angle) was found to be the best while prism films were added to the BLU. As a next step the light guide samples of 74 and 120 degrees were manufactured by DSF method, which was recently proposed by the authors. Of course, most of design parameters were chosen by the aid of simulation results. Finally, the results of average luminance values were compared between the simulation and DSF molded samples.

  • Porous nickel membrane far high precision gas filter was prepared by in-situ reduced/sintered process of NiO with an addition of polymer(PMMA; polymethyl methacrylate). It showed that the porosity of Ni membrane was approximately 52%. It is similar to metal membrane which prepared using metal fiber as raw materials. The average pore diameter and porosity of Ni membrane increased as content of added polymer and decreased as elevating reduced/sintered temperature from $800^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$. Increase of porosity at $800^{\circ}C$ was associated with surface diffusion mechanism that leads to initial sintering, while decrease of porosity at $1000^{\circ}C$ was associated with lattice diffusion and grain boundary diffusion.

  • We report the studies on the red organic phosphor by using perylene bisimide derivatives. Even though perylene bisimide derivatives have excellent thermal stability and luminous efficiency, they have low solubility in organic solvents. In this research, modified perylene bisimide derivative, N,N'-Bis(4-bromo-2, 6-diisopropylphenyl)-1, 6, 7, 12-tetraphenoxyperylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxyl bisimide (1C), has been prepared by the reaction of phenol with N,N'-Bis(4-bromo-2, 6-diisopropylphenyl)-1, 6, 7, 12-tetrachloroperylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxyl bisimide (1B) in presence of DMF, at $70^{\circ}C$. The synthesized (1C) was characterized by using $^1H-NMR$, FT-IR, UV/V is spectroscopy, and TGA. The absorbtion and emission of (1C) was shown at 576 nm and 610 nm in UV/V is spectrum. In TGA thermogram, (1C) showed good thermal stability without significant weight loss to $220^{\circ}C$. And in the solubility analysis, (1C) with phenoxy group showed the good solubility in general organic solvents. The blended films of (1C) with PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) at different weight % concentration such as 10, 5, 1 weight % have been prepared. The blended film was shown at 616 nm when monitored at 450 nm in PL emission spectra.

  • Traditionally, many kinds of mechanical bonding techniques were used for bonding resins to the surface of the metal alloys. If there is a seperation between resin and metal junction by stress accumulation and temperature change of oral cavity, the cracks or crazing may occur, accompanied by failure of resin bonding to metal. This study was designed to compare the shear bond strength of the type IV gold alloy and Cr-Co alloy surfaces treated with various methods and thermocycling. Universal Instron (Model 1000) and scanning electron microscope (JEOL, Japan) was used to record the shear bond strength of 5 groups. Forty specimens were made for each group ; group 1 was treated with sandblasting only, group 2 was coated with V-primer after sandblasting, group 3 was coated with Metal primer, group 4 wase coated with MR Bond and group 5 was coated with silane. After treated with various methods, thermocycling was done for half of the each group. The surfaces of failed pattern were observed with SEM. The results were as follows : 1. Shear bond strength of the group 1 was lower than that of another groups in type IV gold alloys and bond strength of the group 1, 2 were lower than that of group 3, 4, 5 in Cr-Co alloys. 2. Shear bond strength of the gold alloy with resin was higher than that of Cr-Co alloy when specimens were coated with V-primer. 3. Shear bond strength of the Co-Cr alloys with resin was higher than that of gold alloys when specimens were coated with Metal primer. 4. The bond strength of all specimens did not decreased significantly after thermocycling. 5. Adhesive failures were found in group 1 and Cr-Co alloy in group 2, but adhesive and cohesive failures were found in another groups.
