  • This article deals with the development of a mathematical model for the finishing polycarbonate polymerization process using a horizontal rotating disk-ring reactor with counter-current gas sweeping and the performance analysis of the reactor system by using the model. Here we intend to propose a model describing the reactor system consisting of two phases, in which by-product phenol is removed from the polymer of high molecular weight compatible with the products of commercial grades. The vapor phase is represented by a tanks-ln-series model while the polymer melt phase is regarded as a plug flow reactor.

  • We investigated numerically the evolutions of several chemical species which are important for film growth and particle generation in the pulsed $SiH_4$ plasmas. During the plasma-on, the $SiH_x$ concentration increases with time mainly by the generation reaction from $SiH_4$, but, during the plasma-off, decreases because of the hydrogen adsorption reaction. During the plasma-on, the concentrations of negative ions increase with time by the polymerization reactions of negative ions and those become almost zero in the sheath regions because of the electrostatic repulsion. During the plasma-off, the concentrations of negative ions decrease with time by the neutralization reactions with positive ions and some negative ions can diffuse toward the sheath regions because there is no electric field inside the reactor. The polymerized negative ions of higher mass can be reduced successfully by using the pulsed plasma process.

  • Eco-friendly acrylic resin/clay nanocomposites containing pristine montmorillonite (PM) or modified clays (30B and 25A) were prepared from acrylic and styrenic monomers using non-aqueous dispersion (NAD) polymerization. Effect of nanoclays on physical properties of polymerization product and resulting nanocomposites was investigated. In view of NAD particle stability, addition of nanoclay at the beginning of polymerization is proved to be good. Results of gel fraction, acid value and viscosity of the NAD product showed that nanocomposites containing clay 25A showed better physical properties than the ones with other clays. GPC results exhibit the increase in molecular weight and decrease in polydispersity index for the 25A nanocomposite. Increase in layer distance confirmed from XRD analysis showed good dispersion of 25A in the nanocomposite. Thermal and dynamic mechanical analysis showed that highest glass transition temperature and storage modulus for 25A nanocomposites. These results indicate that 25A nanoclay gives the best properties in the process of non-aqueous dispersion polymerization of acrylic resin/nanoclay nanocomposites.

  • Heterogeneous metallocene catalysts supported on montmorillonite (MMT), [$Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MMT, $Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MAO/MMT, and $Cp_2ZrCl_2$ + MAO/MMT], were prepared with three different methods of immobilization and tested for ethylene polymerization. The heterogeneous catalysts immobilized on organo clay (30B-MMT) showed the higher metal loading and polymerization activity than those immobilized on natural clay $Na^+-MMT$. These results suggest that the hydroxyl groups of organo clay interlayers react with the MAO and catalyst through the chemical bond. The metallocene catalyst supported directly on MMT showed lower activity for ethylene polymerization compared to the homogeneous systems, while MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$, catalysts treated with MAO before impregnation, showed a higher activity. The polymers obtained from MMT-supported catalysts have higher melting point, molecular weight and molecular weight distributions than those of homogeneous catalysts. The polymer particles with increasing significant size. Ethylene polymerization over 30B-MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst was also performed varying the process variables to optimize the process conditions.

  • Recently, many studies have been conducted on the nano-scale fabrication technology using twophoton- absorbed polymerization induced by a femtosecond laser. The nano-stereolithography process has many advantages as a technique for direct fabrication of true three-dimensional shapes in the range over several microns with sub-100 nm resolution, which might be difficult to obtain by using general nano/microscale fabrication technologies. Therefore, two-photon induced nano-stereolithography has been recently recognized as a promising candidate technology to fabricate arbitrary 3D structures with sub-100 nm resolution. Many research works for fabricating novel 3D nano/micro devices using the two-photon nano-stereolithography process, which can be utilized in the NT/BT/IT fields, are rapidly advancing.

  • The objective of this study is to improve the mechanical properties in abaca fabric/epoxy composites produced using a VARTM process. The mechanical properties were improved by increasing the surface roughness of the fabric through plasma polymerization and improving the interfacial adhesion between the epoxy and the fabric through changing its hydrophilic properties to the hydrophobic properties. Plasma polymerization at atmospheric pressure and room temperature was used, and the optimal polymerization time to improve the mechanical properties was investigated. NaOH treatment on the fabric was also carried out for the comparison. The composite fabricated using the fabric polymerized for 10 seconds shows the highest tensile strength compared to that of none-polymerized or NaOH treated. Plasma polymerization for more than 20 seconds exhibits decrease in the tensile strength. As a result, the plasma polymerization for more than 20 seconds may have caused some damages on the surface of the fabrics. Also, the hydrophilic abaca represents a tendency of presenting the hydrophobic properties in absorption and sedimentation tests.

  • Optimum synthesis conditions were investigated for the non-aqueous dispersion (NAD) polymerization of environmentally-friendly acrylic resin. The optimum amount of stabilizer was observed to be 20 wt% to prevent flocculation of the synthesized polymer particles. The optimum ratio of aliphatic solvents to aromatic solvents turned out to be 80 to 20 in order to obtain a stabilized NAD resins. The viscosity of NAD resins was affected not only by the reaction time but also by the amount of initiator and the impeller rpm. Also, the particle size and the size distribution were influenced by the amount of stabilizers and initiators. Since the stability of NAD resin was devastated by the increase in particle size when all the monomers were fed at the beginning of polymerization, the monomers need to be put into the reactor step by step throughout the entire polymerization process.

  • The interfacial polymerization method has been applied to various fields as a reaction in which reactive monomers dissolved in two immiscible solutions cause polymerization at the interface. In the case of water treatment membranes, m-phenylene diamine and trimesoyl chloride are used as reactants. The performance of the membrane is affected by various polymerization factors. In this study, we investigated how the spreading rate of the organic solution influences the surface and structure of the membrane. Spreading rate of organic solutions was adjusted to 7.6 and 25 mm/sec. The solution volume of the organic phase was adjusted to 1~3 drops. The observed results showed that cracks were not found in the polyamide membrane when dropping at a drop of 7.6 mm/sec and dropping two drops at 25 mm/sec. On the other hand, cracks occurred in all cases. Therefore, the spreading rate of the initial organic solvent is expected to greatly affect the performance of the polyamide membrane.
