Polymeric hydrogel particles were fabricated to demonstrate the scale-up possibilities with the Particle Replication In Non-wetting Templates (PRINT) process. A permanently etched, specifically designed master was made on a silicon wafer using conventional photolithography, then reactive ion etching. The master and substrate were used repeatedly to make a large number of identical elastomeric perfluoropolyethers (PFPE) replica molds. The PFPE replica molds were used to fabricate and harvest individual, monodisperse micron-sized particles using the PRINT process. A water-soluble polymer adhesive was used as a sacrificial layer for harvesting particles. Particles were composed of biodegradable poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG-diA), and aminoethylacrylate (AEM) and 2-acryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (AETMAC) were added to them for improving the uptake of the cells. This study suggested PRINT used to produce the uniformed and shape specific biodegradable polymer is the effective technique for the non viral vector for the drug and the gene delivery.
It is expected that the inkjet technology offers prospect for reliable and low cost manufacturing of FPD (Flat Panel Display). This inkjet technology also offers a more simplified manufacturing process for various part of the FPD than conventional process. For example, recently the novel manufacturing processes of color filter (C/F) in LCD, or RGB patterning in OLED by inkjet printing method have been developed. This elaborates will be considered as the precious point of manufacturing process for the mass production of enlarged-display panel with a low price. On this point of view, we would like to review the status of inkjet technology in FPD, with some results on forming micro line by inkjet patterning of suspension type silver nano ink as below. We have studied the inkjet patterning of synthesized aqueous silver nano-sol on interface-controlled ITO glass substrate. Furthermore, we designed the conductive ink for direct inkjet patterning on bare ITO glass substrate. The first, the highly concentrated polymeric dispersant-assisted silver nano sol was prepared. The high concentration of batch-synthesized silver nano sol was possible to 40 wt%. At the same time the particle size of silver nanoparticles was below $10{\sim}20nm$. The second, the synthesized silver nano sol was inkjet - patterned on ITO glass substrate. The connectivity and width of fine line depended largely on the wettability of silver nano sol on ITO glass substrate, which was controlled by surfactant. The relationship was understood by wetting angle. The line of silver electrode as fine as $50{\sim}100\;{\mu}m$ was successfully formed on ITO glass substrate. The last, the direct inkjet-patternable silver nano sol on bare ITO glass substrate was designed also.
Bragg reflecting waveguide devices have been fabricated on a flexible polymer substrate utilizing a post lift-off process which could Provide excellent uniformity of grating Patterns on Plastic film. The 510 m Period Bragg grating pattern is made by two methods. In the first sample the grating is fabricated by exposing the laser interference pattern on a photoresist, and then it is inscribed by $O_2$ plasma etching. The grating pattern of the second sample is formed by a PDMS soft mold imprinting process. The selective adhesion property of SU-8 material for Au and Si surfaces is utilized to prepare a 100-mm thick plastic substrate. Single mode waveguide is fabricated on the plastic substrate using polymer materials with refractive indices of 1.540 and 1.430 for the core and the cladding layers, respectively. The Bragg grating on Plastic substrate does not show any degradation in its spectral response compared to the reference sample made on a silicon wafer.
Fracture analysis of coating cracking on a substrate system described in a companion paper was applied and verified by four-point bending tests. The multiple cracking of coating was predicted using a fracture mechanics approach. The strain energy release rate (G) due to the formation of a new crack in a coating was obtained. A crack density vs. strain data of metallic and polymeric substrate was used to get the in-situ fracture toughness of coating with respect to various baking time and temperature. The $G_c$ was decreased as the baking temperature and time was increased. This paper gave insight about usefulness of four-point bending test for fracture toughness evaluation of coating and it gave a new method for in-situ coating toughness.
A vital step in magnetic tape manufacturing is the surface modification of polymer substrate prior to ink application. A critical element for good adhesion of magnetic ink on polymeric substrate is the ability to join ink in cost-effective manner. Corona discharging is one of the effective methods of modifying polymer surface to improve adhesion while maintaining the desirable properties of the film itself. Surface treatment by corona which is exposure of film surface to electron or ion bombardment, rather than mere exposure to active species, like atomic oxygen or ozone, can enhance adhesion by removing contaminant, electret, roughening surface, and/or introducing reactive chemical groups. Reactive neutrals, ions, electron and photons generated during the corona treatment interact simultaneously with polymers to alter surface chemical composition, wettability, and thus film adhesion. However, it is highly recommended that extensive chains scission be avoided because it can lead to side-effect by forming sticky matter, resulting in dropouts. This paper reviews principles of surface preparation of polymer substrate by corona discharging. In addition, the experimental section provides a description of parameter optimization on corona discharging treatment and its side-effect. Experimental results are discussed in terms of surface wetting as determined by contact angle measurements.
Graphene has shown exceptional properties for high performance devices due to its high carrier mobility. Of particular interest is the potential use of graphene nanoribbons as field-effect transistors. Herein, we introduce a facile approach to the fabrication of graphene nanoribbon (GNR) arrays with ~200 nm width using nanoimprint lithography (NIL), which is a simple and robust method for patterning with high fidelity over a large area. To realize a 2D material-based device, we integrated the graphene nanoribbon arrays in field effect transistors (GNR-FETs) using conventional lithography and metallization on highly-doped $Si/SiO_2$ substrate. Consequently, we observed an enhancement of the performance of the GNR-transistors compared to that of the micro-ribbon graphene transistors. Besides this, using a transfer printing process on a flexible polymeric substrate, we demonstrated graphene-silicon junction structures that use CVD grown graphene as flexible electrodes for Si based transistors.

We have studied the alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) on homeotropic polymeric surface that is scanned using an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip by optical polarizing microscopy and computer simulation. The scanned areas on one substrate are 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$ 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$ 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$, and 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$ 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and this substrate is assembled to another substrate coated. with homeotropic polymer. The fabricated micro-LC cell using two substrates does not show any hysteresis and disclination lines inside the nano-rubbing areas, while changing voltage up and down. This indicates that the pretilt angle exists in the areas, thereby forming a hybrid LC configuration. From the experimental and computer simulation results, we can understand that the AFM rubbing clearly changes surface status of homeotropic alignment layer and causes the pretilt angle to an initial scanning direction.

Surface engineering of polymers has a broad array of scientific and technological applications that range from tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, microfluidics and novel lab on chip devices to building mechanical memories, stretchable electronics, and devising tunable surface adhesion for robotics. Recent advancements in the field of nanotechnology have provided robust techniques for controlled surface modification of polymers and creation of structural features on the polymeric surface at submicron scale. We have recently demonstrated techniques for controlled surfaces of soft and relatively hard polymers using ion beam irradiation and plasma treatment, which allows the fabrication of nanoscale surface features such as wrinkles, ripples, holes, and hairs with respect to its polymers. In this talk, we discuss the underlying mechanisms of formation of these structural features. This includes the change in the chemical composition of the surface layer of the polymers due to ion beam irradiation or plasma treatment and the instability and mechanics of the skin-substrate system. Using ion beam or plasma irradiation on polymers, we introduce a simple method for fabrication of one-dimensional, two-dimensional and nested hierarchical structural patterns on polymeric surfaces on various polymers such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), poly (methyl methacrylate) PMMA, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).
Diffusion/penetration rates of finishing agents are not a major criterion in the design of low molecular weight finishing agents. However, in the case of polymeric finishing agents, high molecular weights result in large hydrodynamic volumes and diffusion/penetration of the finishing agent into the substrate may become a critical factor in the design of textile finishing agents. Thus the effect of the molecular weight of a model compound, polyethylene glycol, on its diffusion through a cellulose membrane or cotton fabric is studied. Diffusion experiments of polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 400, 1000, 2000, 4600, 8000, and 10000 through cellulose membrane or fabric was carried out in a glass U-tube diffusion apparatus and the half penetration times and the penetration coefficients were determined. Both the half penetration times and the penetration coefficients exhibited a significant change between molecular weight 2000 and 2500 as the molecular weight of polyethylene glycol increased, suggesting that there is a critical molecular weight above which diffusion/penetration becomes difficult. Based on this study on a model compound, it is suggested that polymeric textile finishing agents can be expected to exhibit similar behavior.
A highly sensitive integrated photonic temperature sensor was proposed and developed incorporating a polymeric microring resonator. The change in the ambient temperature was estimated by observing the shift in the resonant wavelength of the resonator induced via the thermooptic effect. For the purpose of enhancing its sensitivity, the sensor was built by implementing a polymeric resonator exhibiting a high thermooptic coefficient on a silicon substrate with a small coefficient of thermal expansion. For the range of from $20^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$ near the room temperature, the fabricated sensor yielded a sensitivity of as high as 165 ${\pm}/^{\circ}C$ and a resolution of better than $0.1^{\circ}C$. And its performance was found to be hardly affected by the variation in the refractive index of the target analyte, which was applied to the surface of the sensor. It is hence expected that the sensor could be integrated with other refractormetric optical sensors, thereby compensating for the fatal error caused by the change in the ambient temperature.
