  • The shear failure modes of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) strengthened concrete beams are quite different to those of the beams strengthened with steel stirrups. When the beams are strengthened with larger amount of FRP composites, the beams normally fail in shear due to concrete crushing before the FRP reaches its rupture strain. In order to predict the shear strength of such beams, the actual rupture strain must be known. The equations previously reported in the technical literature adopt an effective reduction factor for the rupture strain. These equations may not be applicable to FRP strengthened RC beams that are beyond the experimental application limits, because most of these equations are empirical in nature. This paper presents the results of an analytical study on the performance of reinforced concrete beams externally wrapped with FRP composites and internally reinforced with conventional steel stirrups.

  • In recent years, fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) plates have shown a great promise as an alternative to steel plates for reinforced concrete beam rehabilitation. Reinforced concrete beams strengthened with externally bonded FRP sheets to the tension face can exhibit ultimate flexural strengths several times greater than their original strength if their bond strength is enough. Debonding failure, however, may occur before the strengthened beam can achieve its enhanced flexural strength. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the debonding failure strength of FRP-strengthened reinforced concrete beams. An analytical procedure for calculating debonding load between concrete and strengthening FRP is presented. Based on the local bond stress-slip relationship in the previous studies, uniform bond stress is assumed on the effective bond length. The analytical expressions are developed from linear elastic theory and statistical analyses of experimantal results reported in the literature. The proposed method is verified by comparisons with experimental results reported in the previous researches.

  • A cycloaliphatic epoxy/acidic anhydride system incorporating short carbon fibers (SCF) and short glass fibers (SGF) was fabricated and thermal/mechanical properties were characterized. At low filler content both SCF- and SGF-reinforced composites showed a similar decrease in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), measured by a thermomechanical analyzer, with increasing loadings, above which SCF became more effective than SGF at reducing the CTE. Experimental CTE data for the SCF-reinforced composites is best described by the rule of mixtures at lower SCF contents and by the Craft-Christensen model at higher SCF contents. Storage modulus (E') at $30^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$ was greatly enhanced for short fiber-filled composites compared to unfilled specimens, Scanning electron microscopy of the fracture surfaces indicated that the decreased CTE and the increased E' of the short fiber-reinforced composites resulted from good interfacial adhesion between the fibers and epoxy matrix.

  • To improve the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites, laminated composites plates were fabricated using different matrix resins and glass or aramid fibers. The effect of matrix resin system were evaluated by tensile, flexural strength measurements. In the case of surface treated aramid fiber and unsaturated polyester resin composite, maximum flexural properties were observed in the composite prepared from the glass fiber treated with 0.5 wt% silane coupling agents. Vinylester resin composites show the highest tensile properties and isophthalic polyester composites have the highest flexural properties among the unsaturated polyester resin composites studied. The relationship between overlap laminated composites plates and mechanical properties of polymer composites is also investigated in order to improve mechanical properties of glass fiber and unsaturated polyester resin composites.

  • The development of new material systems like Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) places ever higher demands on the techniques for non-destructive material characterisation. Image-producing eddy current methods also need to satisfy these demands. Eddy-current imaging of FRP is based on the anisotropic electrical properties of the material investigated. Significant differences in conductivity between carbon fibres, polymer matrix and integrated functional components can be found. The availability of high-resolution sensors enables access to the local distribution of the electromagnetic properties. The static and dynamic procedures for isolating influential characteristics, already in use in eddy-current technology, can now be supplemented by topographical images. The precondition for a successful implementation of the eddy-current procedure is a deeper understanding of the image-generating process which allows correct interpretation of the images obtained.

  • Steel, concrete and their combination materials are the most 6commonly used materials for civil engineering structural systems such as buildings, bridge structures and other structures. Recently, however, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, a relatively new composite material made of fibers and polymer resins, have been gradually used in structural systems as an alternative structural material. This paper describes a comparison of design strength equations for steel column and FRP composite column based on design philosophies. The safety factors used in allowable stress design (ASD) are relatively higher in FRP structural design than steel structural design. Column critical stress equations of FRP composites column from an experimental study can be represented by Euler elastic buckling equation at the long-range of slenderness, and an exponential form at the short-range of slenderness as defined in Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) of steel column. The column strength of steel and FRP composite columns in large slenderness is independent of material strength, this result verified the elastic buckling equation as derived by Eq. (15) and Eq. (5).

  • In order to examine the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced cement composites with silica powder PAN - based carbon fiber and Pitch- based carbon fiber, and polymer impregnators experimental studies on CFRC impregnated in polymer were carried out. The effects of types, length, and content~i of carbon fibers and matrices of fresh and hardened CFRC impregnated in polymer were examined. The test results show that compressive, tensile, and flexural strength of CFRC impregnated in polymer were much more iriCreased than those of air cured and autodaved CFIIC CFRC impregnated in polymer was also considerably effective in improving toughness, freeze thaw resistance, loss of shrinkage, and creep resist ance, compared with air cured and autoclaved CFRC.

  • This study developed and investigated a precast slab track system partially reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars in the transverse direction, which mitigated the loss of track circuit current by reducing magnetic coupling between the rails and steel reinforcements. An electric analysis was conducted and the results of the analysis verified that the GFRP rebars mitigate the reduced current strength produced by electro-magnetic induction. In the study, a three-dimensional finite element method and flexural experiments were used to study the mechanical behavior of the proposed slab track.

  • Three types of salt resistant concrete beams reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer-ribbed bars (GFRP-ribbed bars) were selected, and their applicable properties were investigated with the goal of improving the problem of capacity deterioration in marine structures due to sea water corrosion. In this study, the structural behaviors were similar to RC beams in relation to the development of the strength and stiffness up to the generation of the initial crack. After the growth of this initial crack, the structural properties decreased owing to a sudden loss of bond strength. Also these beams showed the trends of brittle failure. As a result, it was confirmed that a GFS beam replaced with Fly Ash (20%) and Silica Fume (5%) has the best application as a marine structural element.

  • MMA-modified fiberglass-reinforced plastic composite pipe was produced by using the binder of MMA-modified unsaturated polyester resin in which low viscosity MMA was added to unsaturated polyester resin. Sixteen specimens were made of polymer mortar and fiberglass-reinforced plastic by the centrifugal method. For these specimens the external strength tests were carried out by taking the core thickness consisting of polymer mortar and the fiberglass content per unit area as experimental variables to figure out the effect of variations of these variables influencing on flexural rigidity that is an important property for the composite pipe. Results of this study are believed to provide the basic data for more economical and practical design of MMA-modified fiberglass-reinforced plastic composite pipe.
