  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of application of microwave energy for the fabrication of polymer/clay nanocomposite. APES/Clay nanocomposites were prepared at 13$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min with various content of clay by melt-intercalation method under classical and microwave heating source. APES/Clay samples were characterized by the means of X-ray diffractometry(XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA), and rheometric dynamic analysis(RDA). It was found that intercalated or exfoliated state was obtained in the samples according to the condition of organic modification, clay content, and heating source.

  • The effect of MMT on mechanical properties of CTBN toughened epoxy nanocomposite is studied. In case of CTBN toughened epoxy nanocomposite with modified MMT, it is found that the enhancement of toughness and tensile properties are exhibited in CTBN toughened epoxy nanocomposite with modified MMT From the results of fractured surface morphology of sample, it is clearly shown that the improved mechanical properties can be obtained in CTBN toughened nanocomposite due to the significant energy dissipation mechanism by MMT loading.

  • Phosrhonium salt exchanged montmorillonites were prepared from a reaction between alkyl triphenyl phosponium bromide and Na$^{+}$-montmorillonite. Epoxy-clay nanocomposites were also prepared by using cycloaliphtic epoxy, methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride as a hardener, and triphenyl butyl phosphonium bromide as an accelerator. TEM and XRD results suggested that clay minerals in the epoxy-montmorillonites composite were intercalated. Mechanical properties such as tensile modulus and strength were measured and the effect of nanocomposite formation was also discussed.

  • Elastomer-clay nanocomposite membranes were prepared by melt intercalation mothod with internal mixer. We are used NMR, Ionomer, SEBS (Styrene Ethylene Butadien styrene Copolymer) as elastomer, and modified clay. Gas barrier property of the elastomer-clay nanocomposites membranes were investigated by a gas permeability of $CO_2,\;O_2,\;N_2$ at room temperature. Gas permeability through the elastomer-clay nanocomposite membranes increased due to increased tortuosity made by intercalation of clay in elastomer.

  • The preparation of organophilic clay from Na$^{+}$-MMT was achieved by intercalation of alkylammonium bromide. The dispersed organophilic clay in NMP was then added to the solution of polyamic acids (BPDA-PPD, BTDA-ODA/ MPD) in NMP. After curing at 30$0^{\circ}C$, thin films of the polyimide/clay nanocomposite were prepared. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) shelved that the d-spacings of dried polyamic acid (PAA)-clay complexes increased in proportion to the chain length of the onium ion and patterns of two kinds of PAA-clay complexes were similar. The d-spacings of approximately 13.2 $\AA$ for the polyimide/clay nanocomposites were independent of the initial onium ion chain length and the species of PAA. From the study of XRD and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we found layered silicates were dispersed in polyimide matrix and the resultants were intercalated nanocomposites. TGA result showed thermal stability of polyimide nanocomposite improved a little more than the pure polyimide. From the result of dynamic mechanical property, we found that the storage modulus of the nanocomposites had increased by 1.2-1.8 times of the pure polyimides.s.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/waterborne polyurethane (WBPU)/montmorillonite clay (MMT) nanocomposite nanofibers were prepared using electrospinning technique of aqueous solutions. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermal gravimetric analyzer were used to characterize the morphology and properties of the nanocomposite nanofibers. Since PVA, WBPU and MMT are hydrophilic, non-toxic and biocompatible materials, these nanocomposite nanofibers can be used for filter and medical industries as wound dressing materials, antimicrobial filters, etc.

  • Composite films were prepared with soy protein isolate (SPI) and various clay minerals by casting from polymer and clay water suspension. Effects of clay minerals on film thickness, moisture content (MC), tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), and water solubility (WS) were tested. Properties including thickness, surface smoothness, and homogeneity of films prepared with organically modified montmorillonite (O-MMT), Wamok clay (W-clay), bentonite, talc powder, and zeolite were comparable to those of control SPI films. TS increased significantly (p<0.05) in films prepared with O-MMT and bentonite, while WVP decreased significantly (p<0.05) in bentonite-added films. WS of most nanocomposite films decreased significantly (p<0.05).

  • As a preliminary work for the preparation of nylon 6/c1ay nanocomposites by reactive extrusion, nylon 6/c1ay nanocomposites were prepared by anionic polymerization in a flask. In order to investigate the effect of the intercalation of clay layers, the clay feeding times, such as in pre-mixing where the clay was fed before initiation of polymerization and in after-mixing method where the clay was fed after initiation of polymerization, were changed. The appearance of the WAXD peak of nanocomposites prepared by the pre-mixing method was obvious and the tensile strength was decreased compared with that of pure nylon 6, which indicates that the clay layers were not dispersed and distributed. During the preparation of the nanocomposites by the after-mixing method, disordering of the clay layers was observed with increasing clay addition time and was suspected to result from the rapid polymerization of nylon 6 within the clay layers.

  • As the preliminary works for the preparation of exfoliated nanocomposites by reactive extrusion (REX) the modified anionic polymerization proceeded in a flask using an $\varepsilon$-caprolactam, catalyst, initiator, and clay. Polymerization methods were classified with a variation of the clay adding time. Intercalations mechanism of clay layers was investigated by measuring the WAXD peaks of clay with polymerization. In the preparation of nanocomposites, the molecular weight of nylon 6 was affected by the clay content. From the mechanical property measurement, improved properties were obtained in comparison to the neat nylon 6, and these properties were also affected by the molecular weight.

  • Clay-dispersed nanocomposites have been prepared by simple melt-mixing of two components, styrenic polymers with different content of functional groups and two different organophilic clays (Cloisite(R) 25A and Cloisite(R)30A) with a twin screw extruder. Dispersibility of 10-$\AA$-thick silicate layers of clay in the hybrid was investigated by using an X-ray diffraction method and a transmission electron microscope. It was found that if the interaction force between intercalant and matrix polymer is attractive, the matrix polymer intercalates more rapidly into the gallery of silicate layers. The faster intercalation of matrix polymer leads to the better dispersibility of silicate layers in the matrix polymer.
