  • In this study, an electro-catalyst of Pt nanoparticles supported by polypyrrole-functionalized graphene (Pt/PPy-reduced graphene oxide [RGO]) is reported. The Pt nanoparticles are deposited on the PPy-RGO composite by chemical reduction of H2PtCl6 using NaBH4. The presence of graphene (RGO) caused higher activity. This might have been due to increased electro-chemically accessible surface areas, increased electronic conductivity, and easier charge-transfer at polymer-electrolyte interfaces, allowing higher dispersion and utilization of the deposited Pt nano-particles. Microstructure, morphology and crystallinity of the synthesized materials were investigated using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed successful deposition of Pt nano-particles, with crystallite size of about 2.7 nm, on the PPy-RGO support film. Catalytic activity for methanol electro-oxidation in fuel cells was investigated using cyclic voltammetry. The fundamental electrochemical test results indicated that the electro-catalytic activity, for methanol oxidation, of the Pt/PPy-RGO combination was much better than for commercial catalyst.

  • The aim of our study is to prepare nanocomposites consisting polymer/inorganic nanoparticles and investigate their physical properties as a functional material. In this study, a nanocomposite of copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles introduced into a poly(acrylic acid) matrix was prepared and the optical absorption property was measured. The composite exhibited strong absorption of both ultraviolet and near-infrared rays, indicating that the composite is applicable to a solar radiation shielding filter. The wavelength of the near infrared absorption was controlled from ca.1000 nm to 1700 nm by heat and acidic solution treatments.

  • We report a novel approach for fabricating active surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for sensitive detection. This approach is based on the assembling of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) onto the electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofiber film. The hydrophobic surface of PCL nanofiber film was pretreated using UV-inducing graft polymerization with acrylic acid. Afterwards this PCL nanofiber film was incubated with the AuNP solution to promote the assembly of AuNPs onto the PCL nanofibers and the formation of SERS active substrate. 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) molecule was used as a test probe for SERS experiments, indicating that the substrate has high sensitivity to SERS response. Our method has great advantage in term of environment-friendly synthesis, large-scale, high stability and good reproducibility. This highly active SERS substrate can be employed to detect the drug molecule, 2-thiouracil.

  • The aim of this work was to develop and evaluate solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) containing all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) for topical delivery. SLN composed of coconut oil and curdlan improved the suspension instability of ATRA in aqueous solution. The photodegradation of ATRA by light was reduced by incorporation in SLN. The loading efficiency of ATRA in SLN was higher than 95% (w/w). The amounts of ATRA released from SLN at $4^{\circ}C$ and at $37^{\circ}C$ were less than 15% and more than 60% (w/w) for 96 h, respectively. The ATRA-loaded SLN can be used as a potential carrier for topical delivery.

  • A low temperature ($65^{\circ}C$) thermal deposition process was developed for depositing a silver coating on thermally sensitive polymeric substrates. This low temperature deposition was achieved by chemical reduction of a silver alkylcarbamate complex with latent reducing agent. The effects of acetol as a latent reducing agent for the silver 2-ethylhexylcarbamate (Ag-EHCB) complex and their blend solutions were investigated in terms of reducing mechanism, and the size and shape of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) as a function of reduced temperature and time, and PVP stabilizer concentration were determined. Low temperature deposition was achieved by combining chemical reduction with thermal heating at $65^{\circ}C$. A range of polymer film, sheet and molding product was coated with silver at thicknesses of 100 nm. The effect of process parameters and heat treatment on the properties of silver coatings was investigated.

  • This study was attended to demonstrate synthesis of silver nanoparticles stabilized with polymer and their applicability to printed electronics. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by reduction of silver nitrate in aqueous solution in the presence of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a stabilizer. The ink used here is composed of 50 wt% Ag NP, 15 wt% humectant and then were printed on polyimide film. Particle deposit morphologies were controlled by varying the ink compositions. Printed silver patterns and dots were cured on a convection oven in air at $300^{\circ}C$ for 60 min. The printed patterns show good shape definition and the resistivity of the printed films is about $5{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$.

  • A new method for encapsulating nanomaterials within intermediary layer cross-linked (ILCL) polymeric micelles using a bifunctional photo-cross-linking agent was developed. For ILCL polymeric micelles, an amphiphilic triblock copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PEG-PHEMA-PMMA) was synthesized via consecutive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), Di(4-hydroxyl benzophenone) dodecanedioate (BPD) was used as a bifunctional photo-cross-linking agent. The PMMA-tethered Au nanoparticles and BPD, or pyrene and BPD were encapsulated in the PEG-PHEMA-PMMA micelles, and their intermediary layers were photo-cross-linked by UV irradiation for 1 h. The HEMA units donated labile hydrogens to the excited-state benzophenone groups in BPD, and they were subsequently cross-linked by BPD through radical-radical combination. The spherical structures of the PEG-PHEMA-PMMA micelles containing the Au nanoparticles or pyrene were unaffected by the photo-cross-linking process.

  • The effect of nanoparticle volume fraction on the elastic properties of a polymer-based nanocomposite was experimentally investigated and the obtained results were compared with various existing theoretical models. The nanocomposite was consisted of high density polyethylene (HDPE) as polymeric matrix and 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 wt.% multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) prepared using twin screw extruder and injection molding technique. Nanocomposite samples were molded in injection apparatus according to ASTM-D638 standard. Therefore, in addition to morphological investigations of the samples, tensile tests at ambient temperature were performed on each sample and stress-strain plots, elastic moduli, Poisson's ratios, and strain energies of volume units were extracted from primary strain test results. Tensile test results demonstrated that 1 wt.% nanoparticles presented the best reinforcement behavior in HDPE-MWCNT nanocomposites. Due to the agglomeration of nanoparticles at above 1 wt.%, Young's modulus, yielding stress, fracture stress, and fracture energy were decreased and Poisson's ratio and failure strain were increased.
