Conducting Polymer-Silica Composites for Immobilization of Enzymes

  • A new enzyme immobilization method based on hydrophobic interaction between supporting material and enzyme has been successfully developed. The efficacy of the new technique has been investigated by loading a horse radish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme on the surface of conducting polymer-silica composites and by measuring the enzyme activity and leaching property of HRP loaded within polymer-silica composites. The immobilized HRP enzyme showed activity profiles similar to that of free HRP in phosphate buffer (pH 6). Above all, HRP adsorbed on the polymer-silica composites has showed excellent stability over 10 days, compared to HRP adsorbed on the pristine silica. It is thought that with appropriate optimization works, the present method would be used as a cost-effective and facile route for the immobilization of biomolecules.

  • Cross-linked polystyrene (PS) particles with carboxyl and/or poly(ethylene glycol) units on surface were formed by an emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization using styrene, methacrylic acid (MA), and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEG-diMMA) at pH 7, and followed by freeze-drying to give the corresponding powders. Monodisperse polymer particles could be obtained at a concentration of PEG-diMMA 1 mol% relative to styrene. Zeta potential of polymer surface was measured to be 91 mV at a polymer of PEG-diMMA 1 mol% and was dropped as the content of MA increased.

  • The existing compressor steel seal used in automotive air-conditioner has the problem of oil leakage and the deterioration in shielding performance, due to the abrasion and the corrosion of the material. A new type of polymer resin seal is studied in the research. The polymer resin seal has the characteristics of high anti-abrasiveness and anti-corrosiveness, which can overcome the deflects of the steel seal. In addition, the seal needs lower manufacturing cost and is appropriate to mass production, because it is made by the injection molding method requiring no mechanical processing. The profile generation program for seal mold has been developed using the gradient method, and the molding characteristics of the seal have analyzed through the flow analysis and the warpage analysis. The program has been verified by comparing the analysis results with the measured data of the test product. The research might be said to provide the basic method to produce the polymer resin seals with various types and dimensions.

  • 플라스틱 안경렌즈의 소재에 관한 일반적인 특성을, 광학적 특성과 polymer의 구조관련시켜 설명함으로써 그 본질적인 부분에 대한 해설을 하였다. PMMA의 경우 ${\delta}$ 전자에 기반을 둔 1중결합에 의해 폴리머의 골격이 유지되고 이들에 의한 빛의 흡수현상은 매우 적은 것이었다, 폴리머의 굴절율은 주로 분자굴절, 분극율에 의해 지배되었고, Cl, Br, I 같은 할로겐기나 벤젠고리를 함유한 경우 굴절율이 높았다. 굴절율의 온도의존성은 무기그라스보다 환경의존성은 컸고, 폴리머내에서의 산란은 결정영역의 불균일한 분포와 관계가 있었다.

Dye Sensitized Solar Cell using Polymer Electrolytes based on Poly(ethylene oxide) with an Ionic Liquid

  • The encapsulation of volatile organic electrolytes is a major challenge in practical applications of the DSSC. Ionic liquid (IL) within polymer electrolytes is an attractive candidate for replacement. Here we used a low viscosity ionic liquid 1-ethyl 3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate in order to modify ionic conductivity (${\sigma}$) of polymer electrolyte ($PEO:Kl/l_{2}$) and hence DSSC efficiency. The doping of IL enhanced ${\sigma}$ and attained maximum (${\sigma}=7.62{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$) at 80 wt% of IL concentration. Beyond this it was harder to get stable films. XRD confirmed that the intensity of the sharp PEO crystalline peaks decreased when IL was added. The DSC studies confirmed the reduction in crystallinity by adding ionic liquid.The efficiency of solar cell using aforesaid material was 0.6 % at 1 sun irradiation.

Preparation and Properties of PEG Modified PNVP Hydrogel

  • Polymer hydrogel has attracted considerable interest as a soft material which is finding expanding applications in pharmaceutics and various biomedical fields. In this work, modified PNVP hydrogels were synthesized by crosslinking polymerization of NVP monomer in the presence of PEG macromer with a methoxy end. The effect of the tethered PEG chain on the properties of the hydrogel was investigated in terms of its swelling capacity, compression gel strength, and the morphology of the resulting hydrogels. These PEG-modified PNVP hydrogels possessed good biocompatibility and a decreased protein (fibrinogen) adsorption, thereby indicating their potential as novel drug delivery matrices and scaffold for tissue engineering.

  • Specialized propulsors for naval applications have numerous opportunities in terms of research, design and fabrication of an appropriate propulsor. One of the most important components of any propulsor is the actuator that provides the mode of locomotion. Ionomeric electro-active polymer may offer an attractive solution for locomotion of small propulsors. A common ionomeric electro-active polymer, ionic Polymer-Metal Composites (IPHCs) give large true bending deformations under low driving voltages, operate in aqueous environments, are capable of transduction and are relatively well understood. IPMC fabrication and operation are presented to further elucidate the use of the material for a propulsor. Various materials, including IPMCs, are investigated and a simplified propulsor model is explored.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the durability and bond strength of polymer powder-modified mortars with special accelerator components. The mortars were prepared with various polymer-binder ratios and applied to the concrete substrate as a repair material. Bond strength, flexural and compressive strengths, freeze-thaw resistance and carbonation resistance were measured for the test. As a result, bond strength of the mortars was increased with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio, and freeze-thaw resistance and carbonation resistance were significantly improved with increasing polymer-cement ratio also.

  • Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is an important inorganic-organic hybrid material with a three-dimensional structure. Polyurethane (PU) is a widely applied polymer that has versatile properties with the change of two phase structure. When POSS is incorporated into PU by physical or chemical methods, many properties can be greatly improved, such as mechanical properties, thermal stability, biodegradation resistance, and water resistance. This paper reviews the recent progress in preparation, structure, and performance of POSS-modified polyurethane from the viewpoint of physical blending and chemical modification.

Fluorescence Micropatterning Based on the Polymeric Photobase Generator Containing Oxime-Urethane Groups by Dansylation

  • A polymeric photobase generator containing oxime-urethane groups is applied to a fluorescence micropatterning material. Polymer bearing oxime-urethane groups was prepared by copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with methacryloyloxyethyl benzophenoneoxime urethane (MBU). The reaction of amino groups in the irradiated copolymer film with dansyl chloride (Dns-Cl) was monitored by using UV absorption, IR absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The fluorescence spectrum of the Dns-Cl-treated irradiated copolymer film shows a strong fluorescence with a fluorescence maximum wavelength at 510 nm. A blue fluorescent micropattern with a line width of $2{\sim}3{\mu}m$ was obtained. Treatment of the irradiated copolymer film with Dns-Cl and rhodamine B mixture led to the formation of green, red, and orange-colored fluorescence micropatterns. Thus, various colored micropatterns on a single polymer film can be obtained by selective excitation of each dye molecules.
