  • We present a method to count the overall length of the zoom system in an initial design stage. In a zoom-lens design using the concept of the group, it has been very hard to precisely estimate the overall length at all zoom positions through the previous paraxial studies. To solve this difficulty, we introduce Teq as a measure of the total track length in an equivalent zoom system, which can be found from the first order parameters obtained by solving the zoom equations. Among many solutions, the parameters that provide the smallest Teq are selected to construct a compact initial zoom system. Also, to obtain an 8× four-group zoom system without moving groups, tunable polymer lenses (TPLs) have been introduced as a variator and a compensator. The final designed zoom lens has a short overall length of 29.99 mm, even over a wide focal-length range of 4-31 mm, and an f-number of F/3.5 at wide to F/4.5 at tele position, respectively.

  • This study evaluated the physical and optical characteristics of hydrophilic ophthalmic polymer with addition of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine in the basic hydrogel ophthalmic lens material, and in particular, the utility of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine as an ophthalmic contact lens material for ophthalmologic devices was investigated. In this study 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine were used as additives. For the preparation of hydrogel lens 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid and a cross-linker EGDMA were copolymerized in the presence of AIBN as an initiator. The physical properties of the produced polymers were measured as followings. The refractive index of 1.433~1.393, water content of 35.95~53.16%, contact angle of $70.6{\sim}51.24^{\circ}$, UVB transmittance of 81.2~82.4%, UV-B transmittance of 81.2~82.4% and visible transmittance of 91.4~92.2% were obtained. Also, in case of protein absorption, the measurement showed that absorbance of Reference and MPC-10 sample was 0.2598 and 0.2250 respectively. Based on the results of this study, ophthalmic lens material containing 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine is expected to be used usefully as a material for high wettability and inhibitor of protein adsorption for ophthalmic hydrogel lens.

  • This paper reports the fabrication of a lenticular liquid crystal (LC) lens array with thermally tunable focus and with the function of a convertible lens type, using the surface structure of a UV-curable polymer and a twisted-nematic (TN) LC cell. The TN LC cell makes the LC lenticular lens function as a converging or diverging lens by controlling electrically the polarization of input light. Therefore, the focal lengths for both the converging and diverging lenses, which can be switched from the TN cell, can be tuned by changing the effective refractive index of the LC by Joule heating of the transparent electrode. As a result, the focal length of the lens with the E7 LC was changed continuously from 8.7 to 31.2 mm for the converging lens type and from -9.8 to -14.2 mm for the diverging lens when the temperature was increased from 25 to $56^{\circ}C$.

  • The general property of plastic ophthalmic lens has been reviewed by the optical property and polymer structure. A PMMA which is synthesized by the polymerization of monomers of two or more kinds is termed a copolymer, and the main chain composes a skeleton of molecular structure in the polymer. Refraction index of polymer was governed mainly by the polarization of molecular and was followed to increase it conspicuously as Cl, Br, and Iodine was substitude to hydrogen. Thermal dependence of refraction index of polymer show that the higher distinctive characteristic than glass material.

  • In this study, the ultraviolet (UV) intensity of polymer insulator was measured using the Anti-Reflective (AR) coating lens on the occurrence of corona discharge. The UV intensity was compared before and after the AR coating. Under the 200-260[nm] of UV lens, the reflection rate before AR coating was 7.5~5.5[%] with 85-89[%] of transmission rate. After AR coating, however, the reflection rate decreased to 1.3~1.22[%] with improved transmission (97.4~97.6[%]). Then, the UV intensity by distance was measured in the polymer insulator. According to the measurement, the UV intensity increased 6.5 times at 37.5[%] of Vm/Vbd with 5[m] of distance. As distance increased, the growth rate declined. As high voltage increased, in addition, AR coating was less effective due to the count error caused by the UV sensor pulse signal overlap. Therefore, it appears that it would be more effective to detect corona discharge with 5[m] or less of distance at diagnosis of power facilities by AR coating and UV sensor sensitivity.

  • Ultraviolet rays, which have wavelengths smaller than 400 nm, are very harmful to the eyes. Recently, high-energy visible light was also revealed to be harmful to retinal cells. Therefore, polymer eyeglass lenses that can block UV and high-energy visible light are needed for eye health. In this study, high-refractive-index polymer eyeglass lens, n=1.67, were manufactured using the injection-mold method with the m-xylene diisocyanate monomer, 2,3-bis((2-mercaptoethyl)thio)-1-propanethiol monomer, benzotriazole UV absorber, release of alkyl phosphoric ester, dye mixture of CI solvent violet 13, and catalyst of dibutyltin dichloride mixture. A multi-layer anti-reflection coating was applied to manufactured polymer eyeglass lenses for both sides using an E-beam evaporation system. The optical properties of the manufactured lenses with the UV and high-energy visible light-blocking function were analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometry. As a result, the polymer eyeglass lens with a UV absorber of 0.5 wt. % blocked 99% of UV and high-energy visible light shorter than 411 nm. The average transmittance of the polymer eyeglass lens with a UV absorber of 0.5wt.% was 97.9% in the range of 460 ~ 660 nm for photopic eye sensitivity higher than 10%. Therefore, clear image acquisition in photopic vision is possible.

  • Interfacial properties of commercially available soft contact lens hydrogels were studied to understand thermodynamic phenomena of protein adsorption. Hydrogel particles ($1{\times}1mm^2$) with varying water wettability were exposed to bovine serum albumin solutions for an hour. The remained albumin solutions were analyzed with Bradford assay method. The amount of protein adsorbed to hydrogels increased with protein solution concentrations following Langmuir isotherm. The partition coefficient ($P$) and Gibbs free energy cost of dehydrating the surface region by protein displacement upon adsorption increased with increasing hydrophilicity of contact lens. Understanding of physical chemistry in protein adsorption to contact lens materials enabled elucidating relationships between surface energy and albumin adsorption capacity.

  • The compound refractive X-ray lens (CRL) for focusing hard X-rays is investigated to determine the parameters such as the focal length, the focal spot size, and spatial distribution at the focal spot using a simple theoretical calculations and CRLs fabricated by the self-assembly method. The number of individual compound lenses are defined for the given focal length of 1 m. The X-ray energy of 1 to 40 keV is used in the calculations. The CRL for focusing hard X-rays which generated from the X-ray tube is fabricated by nanoparticle-polymer composite in the form of circular concaves. The self-assembly method is applied to form the nanoaluminum-poly (methly meth-acrylate) composite and carbon-polymer composite CRL lenses. Aluminum nanoparticles of 100 nm and carbon microparticles are diffused in the polymer solution then the high gravity up to 6000G is applied in it to form the concave lens shape. X-ray energy at 8 keV is used for characterization of the composite CRLs. The FWHM of intensity for the fabricated nanoaluminium composite CRL system, N=10 is measured as 1.8 mm, which would give about $70{\mu}m$ in FWHM at 1 m of the focal length.
