Thermal Degradation Behavior and Reliability Analysis of Plastic Materials for Household Electric Appliances (가전제품용 플라스틱 재료의 열분해 거동 및 신뢰성 평가)

  • The thermal degradation behavior and reliability analysis were investigated using dynamic thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and accelerated degradation test (ADT) to characterize the dynamic parameters related to thermal degradation of plastic meterials for household electric appliances. In addition, the weathering of the plastic were performed by ADT using Xenon uc, and the color difference of the samples after ADT were measured with Color Eye 3010 specoophotometer. he activation energy for thermal degradation of the samples increased with increasing the rate of weight loss. The Kim-Park method was found to be more effective analysis in describing thermal degradation of plastic meterials. Plastic materials were very sensitive to ultra-violet rays in faster degradation.

The Study on Drag Reduction Rates and Degradation Effects in Synthetic Polymer Solution with Surfactant Additives (계면활성제를 이용한 합성고분자 수용액의 마찰저항감소 및 퇴화 특성 향상 연구)

  • The turbulent flow resistance of water solution with polymer is reduced as compared with that of pure water. This effects is named th drag reduction and offers the significant reduction of the pumping power and the energy consumption. But the intense shear forces and the high temperature experienced by the polymer solution when passing through the pipes cause the degradation a loss of drag reduction effectiveness. Especially, the degradation behavior is found to be strongly dependent on temperature. This mechanical and thermal degradation can be avoided by adding materials such as surfactant to the polymer solution, which enhance the bonding force between molecules. In the present study, Copolymer and SDS were utilized and they were mixed in 10 different mixture ratios, while total concentration was fixed as 100wppm. Degradation of Copolymer-SDS mixture solutions was investigated experimentally in closed loop at the temperature of $10^{\circ}C\; and\; 80^{\circ}C$ with various flow average velocities of 1.5 m/sec, 3.0m/sec, and 4.5m/sec. Degradation characteristics of polymer solution without surfactant show a radical loss of drag reduction effectiveness at high temperature. Degradation alleviation ability of surfactant is especially effective at high temperature. Consequently, this results show that the addition of surfactant to the polymer solution can control unfavorable degradation phenomena for high temperature systems.

  • A significant drag reduction in the turbulent flow of CWM(coal Water Mixture) adding minute amounts of high molecular weight polymer additives has been obtained and it was compared with pure CWM.However, the rate of drag reduction could come down with flow time, which is caused by polymer degradation, The rate of drag reduction and polymer degradation is affected by polymer type, concentration, molecular weight, and flow velocity. In the present investigation, these important parameters were evaluated for their influences on polymer degradation in order to find out stable conditions for CWM transportation with time. It was necessary to determine the more effective type of polymer additives to guarantee the optimum conditions for CWM transport. Experiments were undertaken with a test section of pipe diameter 9.8mm and pipe length 3500mm(L/D=357) in a closed loop, and polyacrylamide and polyetylene oxide were utilized as polymer additives. The tests were carried out under the conditions of 200, 400, 700ppm of polymer concentrations. CWM concentrations utilized were 5% and 10% with flow velocities of 4.9m/s and 6.1m/s. Experimental data show that polyehylene oxide degraded faster than polyacrylamide in CWM transport, and polyacryamide is considered to be a more effective candidate as additive for long time-CWM transport. Polymer degradation is also found to be more likely at lower polymer concentrations, at higher flow velocities, and higher CWM concentrations.

The Degradation of the Effect of Drag Reduction in Synthetic Polymer Solution (합성고분자 첨가제에 의한 마찰저항감소효과의 퇴화에 관한 연구)

  • Degradation of polymer additives is enhanced at higher temperature of the test solutions. The degradation of Co-polymer solution was investigated experimentally in a closed loop at the temperature of 6$0^{\circ}C$ and 8$0^{\circ}C$ with various polymer concentrations of 100, 200, 400, 600 ppm in order to see the effect of temperature and polymer concentration with time. The degradation effect were found to be more dependent on temperature than mechanical shear. The friction factor versus Reynolds number curves show that in the range of Reynolds number number 50,000~150,000 the friction was decreased as Reynolds number increased and the friction of solution at low temperature approached to Virk's maximum drag reduction asymptote. For constant flowrates and temperatures the degradation effect was found to be less likely in higher polymer concentration. For constant flowrates and polymer concentrations the degradation rates are affected mainly by temperature. At the temperature of 8$0^{\circ}C$ and polymer concentration of 100 ppm, drag reduction effect was disappeared after 4 hours. However, this thermal degradation could be avoided with additional materials such as surfactants which are supposed to enhance the bonding forces between polymer molecules.

  • Turbulent drag reduction (DR) efficiency of water soluble poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with two different molecular weights was studied as a function of polymer concentration and temperature in a turbulent flow produced via a rotating disk system. Its mechanical degradation behavior as a function of time in a turbulent flow was also analyzed using both a simple exponential decay function and a fractional exponential decay equation. The fractional exponential decay equation was found to fit the experimental data better than the simple exponential decay function. Its thermal degradation further exhibited that the susceptibility of PEO to degradation increases dramatically with increasing temperature.

  • This study is to investigate the effect of a substantial drag reduction caused by the polymer(A611P) when the working fluids flow to the vertical direction in the vertical cylindrical equipment of closed flow system. The drag reduction is associated with the mechanical degrada-tion thermal degradation and heat transfer. By ignore the heat fluxs within the closed system the pressure drop due to the polymer concentration the flow velocity and flow time have been mea-sured. By taking into account the mechanical and thermal degradation in the closed system an experiment has been focused on the determination of the condition which could improve the pump capacity in the heat union electric power plant. Under the condition of non-boiling it has been found out that the change of heat flux has little influence on the drag reduction.

  • In order to analyse the degradation mechanism of polymer materials for outdoor condition, FRP laminate was exposed to high temperature and ultraviolet rays. Then, thedegradation process was evaluated by comparing contact angle, surface potential decay, and polarity effect respectively. Especially, the analysis of surface degradation phenomena by corona charging method showed the exact correlation with the result of chemical properties. Therefore we can confirm that the application of corona charging method on the identification of degradation process is very useful. If this method is usedin degradation studies on the polymer surface, it will be more effective on the surface analysis of polymer insulators. With corona charging method and chemical spectrum analysis, it was possible concretely to define degradation process on the polymer surface exposed at the situation of different environmental conditions.

Degradation Characteristics of Perfluoropolyether Lubricant for Computer Hard Disk (컴퓨터 하드디스크 윤활제로 사용되는 Perfluoropolyether의 분해거동)

  • The degradation characteristics of perfluoropolyether (PFPE) for computer hard disk drive have been investigated. Thermal degradation in PFPE started at $170\;^{\circ}C$ and it was completed at $450\;^{\circ}C$. If PFPE was contacted with wear fragment from slider made by $Al_2O_3{\cdot}TiC$, the thermal degradation was accelerated by the catalytic Lewis acid degradation. The Lewis acid degradation mainly took placed in methylene oride(fluoride) chain scission as well as methylene(fluoride) and hydroxy end chain. As a result, the degradation reaction accomplished as early as at $300\;^{\circ}C$. The photo oxidation due to UV exposure on PFPE caused the chain scission in methylene(fluoride), and end chain in PFPE without chain scission in methylene oxide(fluoride) and then the molecular weight of PFPE increased by expected secondary reactions between formed radicals in the photo oxidation.

  • Polystyrene and polystyrene blended with SBR were subjected to the mechanical degradation by roll mastication. The results obtained are as follows. 1. For the polystyrene which is blended with SBR, the overall shape of the molecular weight distribution curve moves from the higher molecular weight portion to the lower molecular weight portion, becomes narrower in breadth, and its peak becomes higher as the degradation proceeds. The final molecular weight distribution exhibits a relative uniformity. This is due to the fact that only the polymer molecules with the high molecular weight consisted in original polystyrene are degraded mechanically and produced the polymer molecules with the low molecular weight. 2. The scission number of polystyrene chains increases with mastication time, and the number of degraded polymer chains produced when the polymer is masticated for 100 minutes at 140, 150 and $160^{\circ}C$ are $2.36{\times}10^{20},\;1.76{\times}10^{20}\;and\;1.52{\times}10^{20}$, respectively. 3. The rate of the degradation of polystyrene decreases with the mastication temperature. The activation energy is found to have the negative value, -8.7 kcal/mole. Therefore it is indicated that the mechanical degradation is a chemical process of which the activation energy is supplied mechanically.

Reliability Based Design of the Automotive Components considering Degradation Properties of Polymeric Materials (열화물성을 고려한 차량용 플라스틱 부품의 신뢰성 기반 설계)

  • In this study, we used a stochastic approach for guaranteeing the reliability and robustness of the performance with regard to the design of polymer components, while taking into consideration the degradation properties and operating conditions in automobiles. Creep and tensile tests were performed for obtaining degradation properties. The Prony series, which described the viscoelastic models, were calculated to use the creep data by the Maxwell fluid model. We obtained the stress data from the frequency response analysis of the polymer components while considering the degradation properties. Limit state functions are generated by using these data. Reliability assessments are conducted under the variation of the degradation properties and area of frequency at peak response. For this study, the input parameters are assumed to be a normal distribution, and the reliability under the yield stress criteria is evaluated by using the Monte Carlo Simulation. As a result, the reliabilities, according to the three types of polymer materials in automotive components, are compared to each other and suggested the applicable possibility of polymeric materials in automobiles.
