  • The building industry must aim at high-durability and sustainability. A holistic life cycle based approach is recommended to reduce the environmental load. In recent years, technical innovations in the construction industry have advanced to a great extent, and caused the active research and development of high-performance and multifunctional construction materials. Nowadays, various polymer powders have been commercialized to manufacture construction materials in the form of prepackaged-type products, which have rapidly been developed for lack of skilled workmen in construction sites. Recently, terpolymer powders of improved quality have been developed and commercialized as cement modifiers. And, hydrocalumite is a material that can adsorb the chloride ions (Cl-) causing the corrosion of reinforcing bars and liberate the nitrite ions (NO2-) inhibiting the corrosion in reinforced concrete, and can provide a self-corrosion inhibition function to the reinforced concrete. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the self-corrosion inhibition function of polymer-modified mortars using redispersible powders with hydrocalumite. Polymer-modified mortars using VA/E/MMA and VAE redispersible powders are prepared with various calumite contents and polymer-binder ratios, and tested for chloride ion penetration depth, corrosion inhibition. As a result, regardless of the polymer-binder ratio, the replacement of ordinary portland cement with hydrocalumite has a marked effect on the corrosion-inhibiting property of the polymer-modified mortars. Anti-corrosion effect of polymer-modified mortars using VA/E/MMA terpolymer powder with hydrocalumite is higher than that of VAE copolymer powder.

  • In this study, a series of soil concrete mixtures were tested for the compressive strength according to ratio of aggregate to binder, compaction energy, maximum aggregate size, ratio of silica fume to cement, and ratio of water to binder. The optimum mixing ratio of soil concrete mixtures composed of volcaniclastic, cement, silica fume, concrete polymer and water were analysed. The test results for optimum proportion were as follows ; (1)ratio of aggregate to binder was 4 : 1, (2)compaction energy level was level 2, (3)maximum aggregate size was 13 mm, (4)ratio of silica fume to cement was 10%, (5)ratio of water to binder was 25%. Also, dry type construction techniques were applied using the optimum soil concrete mixture. From the results of this study, the compressive strength of soil concrete and construction techniques were suitable for making eco-friendly soil pavement.

  • Plastic bonded explosive(PBX) is mainly composed of the nitramine explosives, RDX, HMX, and polymer binders. When the adhesion between nitramine crystals and binder is not particularly strong and can be failed under stress, dewetting occurs rather suddenly and this leads to a significant drop in tensile strength of explosives. Mechnical property of plastic bonded explosive depends on the surface characteristics of filler and binder. In order to design for better adhesion, an understanding of the surface properties of explosive and binder is essential. In this study, 2 kinds of RDX and 4 kinds of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers are selected, since they are widely used in many plastic bonded explosives. The technical objective of this investigation is to calculate for the surface free energy of RDX and EVA using theory of Fowkes, van Oss, Neumann approaches and Kaelble equation and to predict the interaction between filler and binder from their surface free energies.

  • To improve the adhesion properties between the conductive paste and PET film, the PET film was chemically treated using acids and bases and physically treated through corona discharge. A paste using ethylcellulose, which is used in actual industrial manufacturing and silane-treated CNF, as a binder was manufactured and coated on PET film to compare the adhesive properties. The specimen coated with a paste containing silane-treated CNF as a binder on a corona discharge-treated PET film showed the highest level of adhesion, 5B. On the other hand, it was confirmed that when PET film was chemically treated with acid/base, there was no improvement in adhesive properties.

  • Permeable polymer concrete has a lot of internal voids, which has more excellent performance in permeability and durability than asphalt and cement concrete. Therefore, in this paper, influences of grading distribution of aggregates on the permeable polymer concrete are presented using polyester resin as binders. According to test results, it shows that compressive strength and unit weight increase with continuous grading distribution and increase of binder content, while void and permeability coefficient shows decline tendency

  • For the first time, a totally solid state electric double layer capacitor has been fabricated using an alkaline polymer electrolyte and an activated carbon powder as electrode material. The polymer electrolyte serves both as separator as well as electrode binder. The capacitor has a three-layer structure; electrode-electrolyte-electrode. A cyclic voltammetry and constant current discharge have been used for the determination of the electro chemical performance of capacitors.

Also, this study was performed to evaluate the planting properties of herbaceous plant and cool-season grass in porous polymer blocks based on the experimental results of porous polymer concrete to develop environmentally friendly planting blocks. Tests for the void ratio and compressive strength of porous polymer concrete were performed at the curing age 7 days. Also, kinds of plants such as Tall fescue, Perennial ryegrass, Lespedeza and Alfalfa for planting were applied to porous polymer blocks. Within 6 weeks after seed, initial germination ratio, cover view and growth length for planting blocks were estimated by various methods.

  • The organic/organic core-shell composite polymer for nonwomen binder were synthesized by stage polymerization of methyl methacrylate and styrene with ammonium persulfate after preparing monomer pre-emulsion in the presence of anionic surfactant. We study the effect of initiator concentration, $0.79{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}3.16{\times}10^{-3}mol/L$ for core polymer, $2.0{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}8.0{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ for shell polymer, sulfactant concentration, $1.45{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}4.15{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$ for core polymer, $0.73{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}2.91{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$ for shell polymer on core-shell structure of polymethyl methacrylate/polystyrene and polystyrene/polymethyl methacrylate. Emulsion stability was major test method, particle size and particle size distribution were measured using particle size analyzer and the morphology of the core-shell composite polymer was determined using transmission electron microscope, glass temperature was also measured using differential scanning calorimeter.
