In this study, as part of the development of a monitoring system for the efficient maintenance of steel pipes, an experimental study was conducted to evaluate the performance of steel pipes treated with modified polyethylene coating. In the case of the conventional mechanical pre-coating method, there was a deterioration in polyethylene adhesion during expansion testing, which led to the application of a chemical pre-treatment process using a calcium-mixed phosphate zinc film to resolve this issue. SEM and EDX analyses showed that the densest structure was observed at a Zn/Ca ratio of 1.0, and improved heat resistance compared to the conventional method was confirmed. Additionally, to prevent coating detachment during expansion, an evaluation of adhesion and elongation was conducted on steel pipes with modified polyethylene coating, incorporating materials such as elastomers based on maleic anhydride grafting, metal oxides, blocking agents, and slip agents. Experimental results showed that the specimen (S4) containing all modified materials exhibited more than a 25% performance improvement compared to the specimen (S2) containing only metal oxides. Lastly, the development and performance evaluation of wedge-shaped socketing and pressing wheels, which are part of the pipe fixing accessories, were conducted to prevent surface coating damage on the completed pipes.

The compounds of recycled polyethylene(PE) and fly-ashes were prepared. Polymers used were sorted PE from mixed plastics of household waste and Low Density Polyethylene(LDPE) and Linear Low Density Polyethylene(LLDPE) recycled from the scrap of packaging film plants. Fly-ashes were from the power plant and from the household waste incinerator. The tensile strength of recycled LDPE and LLDPE compounds decreased and the flexural modulus increased with greater amount of the power plant fly-ash. Anthracite fly-ash gave rise to slightly higher tensile and flexural strength of the LLDPE mixtures than bituminous coal fly-ash presumably due to higher content of unburned carbon. The incinerator fly-ash introduced to household waste PE enhanced both tensile strength and flexural modulus of the compounds. When LDPE and household waste PE were used together, the synergistic effect of incinerator fly-ash to household waste PE was offset by reduced crystallization of LDPE due to the filler particle. The compounds of household waste PE and incinerator fly-ash might be applied to structural materials for such as sewage pipe, which reduces the waste treatment cost and conserve the environment and resources.
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipelines in nuclear power plants (NPPs) have to meet high requirements for seismic performance. HDPE pipes have been proved to have good seismic performance, but joints are the weak links in the pipelines, and pipeline failures usually initiate from the defects inside the joints. Limited data are available on the seismic performance of butt-fusion joints of HDPE pipelines in NPPs, especially in terms of defects changes inside the joints after earthquakes. In this paper, full-scale shaking table tests were performed on a test section of suspended HDPE pipelines in an NPP, which included straight pipes, elbows, and 10 butt-fusion joints. During the tests, the seismic load-induced strain of the joints was analyzed by strain gauges, and it was much smaller than the internal pressure and self-weight-induced strain. Before and after the shaking table tests, phased array ultrasonic testing (PA-UT) was conducted to detect defects inside the joints. The locations, numbers, and dimensions of the defects were analyzed. It was found that defects were more likely to occur in elbows joints. No new defect was observed after the shaking table tests, and the defects showed no significant growth, indicating the satisfactory seismic performance of the butt-fusion joints.

Coal-tar enamel, blown asphalt and polyethylene have been used as wrapping materials of steel pipe in Korea. Currently, every manufacturer produces wrapped steel pipes with different materials and methods, and little research has been performed to get on wrapping methods and materials. In this research, properties of wrapping material of steel pipe used for water supply have been evaluated. All of the materials tested in this work were found to meet the standard. Among the wrapping materials of steel pipe tested, blown asphalt and coal-tar enamel were reasonable in price, and their mechanical properties were excellent. The quality of the wrapped steel pipes was being melted easily in organic solvent. When coated thick, the load of the steel pipes was higher than necessary. Tensile strength of cathode exfoliation and PE 3-layer wrapping method was excellent. The pulling intensity of T-Die PE 3-layer was stronger than PE fluidized in PE wrapping method. Cathode exfoliation area was smaller than PE fluidized. Mechanical property and thermo-property of T-Die PE 3-layer were excellent and its anti-chemical property was great. Liquid epoxy can change the property of coating materials depending on the hardening condition and resin selection. Polyurethane used in this test showed a less adhesive strength with steel pipes than epoxy. Moisture absorbance rate was higher than Epoxy's, however. To utilize polyurethane as wrapping materials, basic property of the matter should be improved followed by finding the best suited coating condition. The method of PE 3-layer by extrude method appeared to be the best in this study. However, identification of other wrapping materials requires further additional tests.

Earthquakes are one of the most important disasters affecting underground structures. Urban gas underground pipes may cause safety problems of structures in the event of an earthquake. Since Korea began digital observation, the number of earthquakes has been steadily increasing. The seismic design standard for urban gas pipes was established in 2008, but it is difficult to estimate the impact of pipes in the event of an earthquake based on the installation of pipes. In this study, structural analysis was performed on PE (polyethylene pipe) pipes and PLP (polyethylene coated steel pipe) pipes, which are mainly used as buried pipes in Korea, according to environmental and pipe variables in the event of an earthquake. This study sought to find the variables of the most vulnerable buried pipe by modeling pipes through Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and generating displacement on the ground. Through this study, it was confirmed that the larger the elastic modulus of the soil, the deeper the buried depth, the smaller the tube diameter, and the higher the pressure, the more PLP pipes are affected by earthquakes than PE. Based on these results, the vulnerable points of buried urban gas pipes are inferred and used for special inspections of buried pipes in the event of an earthquake.

In this study, finite element analyses of coated steel pipes were conducted to research the development of sensing-based monitoring smart pipes. The coated steel pipes underwent a chemical coating pretreatment process that used modified polyethylene on both the inside and outside surfaces. Furthermore, the steel pipes were designed to minimize damage during the expansion process by incorporating connecting parts. To evaluate structural performance under various loads, four loading conditions were established: static structural analysis by earth pressure, fatigue life evaluation by vehicle load, and resistance to water leakage under both tensile and compressive loads. The analysis estimated a higher fatigue life for the developed steel pipe, compared with that of a steel pipe using ready-made epoxy coatings and joints. In addition, an average maximum displacement reduction of 56.1% and a maximum stress reduction of 61.2% were confirmed under identical conditions and diameters, thereby verifying the safety of the connecting parts of the developed coated steel pipe. Furthermore, the results of stress distribution contour analyses revealed superior water leakage resistance at the fastening parts, compared with the centers of the pipes.

After an earthquake, fire and gas explosions are more likely to cause more casualties in cities with many apartment buildings and large complex buildings. In order to prevent this, seismic design is necessary for the fire protection sprinkler system. However, most systems currently use stainless-steel pipes, although synthetic resin pipes are used in some special places. These materials are susceptible to vibration and earthquakes. This study evaluated the displacement absorption flexibility of polyethylene (PE) and aluminum (Al) multi-layered composite pipes to increase the seismic performance in a vibration environment and during earthquakes. The seismic performance was compared with that of a stainless-steel and PE pipes. The seismic characteristics can be measured by measuring the amount and extent of vibration transmitted by the sprinkler pipe. This method can be used to judge the seismic characteristics to attenuate the vibration during an earthquake. The seismic characteristics of the pipe were verified by comparing the logarithmic attenuation rate to the initial response displacement of the vibration generated by the transverse vibration measurement method.

The energy slab is a ground coupled heat exchanger equipped in building slab structures, which represents a layout similar to the horizontal ground heat exchanger (GHEX). The energy slab is installed as one component of the floor slab layers in order to utilize the underground structure as a hybrid energy structure. However, as the energy slab is horizontally arranged, its thermal performance is inevitably less than the conventional vertical GHEXs. Therefore, stainless steel (STS) pipes are alternatively considered as a heat exchanger instead of high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes in order to enhance thermal performance of GHEXs. Moreover, not only a floor slab but also a wall slab can be utilized as a heat-exchangeable energy slab in order to maximize the use of underground space effectively. In this paper, four field-scale energy slabs were constructed in a test bed, which consist of the STS and HDPE pipe, and a series of thermal response tests (TRTs) was conducted to evaluate relative heat exchange efficiency per unit pipe length according to the pipe material and the configuration of energy slabs. The energy slab equipped with the STS pipe shows higher thermal performance than the energy slab with the HDPE pipe. In addition, thermal performance of the wall-type energy slab is almost equivalent to the floor-type energy slab.
The Notched Ring Test(NRT) has proven to be very useful in determining the slow crack growth behavior of polyethylene pressure pipes. In particular, the test is simple and an order of magnitude shorter in experimental times as compared to the currently used Notched Pipe Test(NPT), which makes this method attractive for use as the accelerated slow crack growth test. In addition, since the NRT specimen is taken directly from the pipe, having maintained the cross-section, processing induced artifacts that would affect the slow crack growth behavior are not altered. This makes the direct comparison to the slow crack growth specimen in pipe from more meaningful. In this study, for comparison with other available slow crack growth methods, including the NPT, the stress intensity factor equation for NRT specimen was developed and demonstrated of its accuracy within 3% of that obtained from the finite element analysis. The equation was derived using a flexure formula of curved beam bending along with numerically determined geometric factors. The accuracy of the equation was successfully tested on 63, 110, 140, 160, 250, and 400 mm nominal pipe diameters, with crack depth ranging from 15 % to 45 % of the pipe wall thickness, and for standard dimensional ratio(SDR) of 9, 11, and 13.6. Using this equation the slow crack results from 110SDR11 NRT specimen were compared to that from the NPT specimen, which demonstrated that the NRT specimen was equivalent to the NPT specimen in creating the slow crack, however in much shorter experimental times.
