  • In this study, Indomethacin, the poorly water soluble drug, was selected and prepared dispersing oral disintegrating films according to the molecular weight of polyethylene glycol (PEG) which are sort of dispersing agents. Also the molecular weight and content of PEG were evaluated effect on the degree of dispersion, physical property and dissolution when making oral dispersing film containing indomethacin to find appropriate condition and suggested guidelines of making oral dispersing film. The appropriate dispersing ratio of the amount of surfactants and dispersing agent were 1% and 4%, also the stability dropped in the PEG molecular weight of 4000 or more. Drying time of oral dispersing film was $90^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes to 12 minutes that dispersing film's property about flexibility, detachability were very good. The oral dispersion film's content used PEG 400 was $98.6{\pm}0.5%$ and the most uniform. As the molecular weight of PEG increased, dissolution time also increased. On the basis of evaluation parameter, PEG with 400~600 of molecular weight was selected as good dispersing agent in oral dispersing film. Therefore, it can be suggested guideline of preparation application study in oral dispersing film.

  • Polyethylene glycols(PEGs)are hydrophilic molecules that have been used to characterize intestinal permeability via the paracellular pathway. Using a mixture of PEGs(400, 600 and 1000), containing oligomers in the molecular weight range 330 to 1122 D, the molecular weight permeability dependence in the jejunum of the rat small intestine was examined, employing an in situ recirculation perfusion technique. Individual oligomers were determined by HPLC with refractive detection. In the range studied, a distinct molecular weight cut-off was not apparent. Corrected for the length of jejunum used in the study, over the molecular weight range 330 to 1122D, the apparent permeability(Papp) of PEG ranged from 4.92$\pm$0.02$\times$10-5cm/sec(mean$\pm$SEM, n=5) to 0.28$\times$10-5cm/sec. Also, it was observed that the apparent permeability was inversely proportional to approximately MW2. The results in this study suggest that molecular weight is an important factor in determining the intestinal permeability.

  • Diffusion/penetration rates of finishing agents are not a major criterion in the design of low molecular weight finishing agents. However, in the case of polymeric finishing agents, high molecular weights result in large hydrodynamic volumes and diffusion/penetration of the finishing agent into the substrate may become a critical factor in the design of textile finishing agents. Thus the effect of the molecular weight of a model compound, polyethylene glycol, on its diffusion through a cellulose membrane or cotton fabric is studied. Diffusion experiments of polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 400, 1000, 2000, 4600, 8000, and 10000 through cellulose membrane or fabric was carried out in a glass U-tube diffusion apparatus and the half penetration times and the penetration coefficients were determined. Both the half penetration times and the penetration coefficients exhibited a significant change between molecular weight 2000 and 2500 as the molecular weight of polyethylene glycol increased, suggesting that there is a critical molecular weight above which diffusion/penetration becomes difficult. Based on this study on a model compound, it is suggested that polymeric textile finishing agents can be expected to exhibit similar behavior.

  • The solubility and stability of quercetin in various vehicles were determined. The solubility of quercetin at $28^{\circ}C$ increased in the rank order of isopropyl myristate < oleyl alcohol < propylene glycol monolaurate < oleoyl macrogol6 glycerides < linoleoyl macrogol-6 glycerides < propylene glycol laurate (PGL) < propylene glycol monocaprylate (PGMC) < polyethylene glycol-8 glyceryl linoleate < caprylocaproyl macrogol-6 glycerides < diethylene glycol mono ethyl ether (DGME). The addition of DGME to non-aqueous vehicles such as PGL ad PGMC markedly increased the solubility of quercetin. From the stability studies, it was found that quercetin was unstable due to rapid oxidation by dissoved oxygen. The addition of a combination of ascorbic acid and edetic acid (EDTA) at 0.1 % markedly decreased the degradation rates of quercetin in 40% polyethylene glycol 400 in saline. Quercetin was relatively unstable in non-aqueous vehicles such as PGL and PGMC alone, and PGL-PGMC co-solvent The degradation of quercetin in such non-aqueous vehicles was fast, depending on temperature. The addition of butylated, hydroxytoluene, butylated hydroxyanisole, citric acid and/or EDTA at 0.1 % was effective in retarding the degradation of quercetin.

  • The effects of different dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) isomers, when used as matrix materials in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), were investigated in analyses of polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymers. PEG polymers ranging from 400 to 8,000 Da were prepared in different DHB isomer matrices using solvent-based and solvent-free methods. PEG samples were detected only in matrices of 2,3-DHB, 2,5-DHB, and 2,6-DHB while the most intense peaks were observed using 2,6-DHB in both solvent-free and solvent-based preparations.

  • To clarify the diffusional behavior of p-aminbenzoic acid esters in the presence of polyethylene glycol 400, cellulose membrane permeation rate, solubility and viscosity of p-aminobenzoic acid methyl ester, benzocaine and butamben were determined with PEG solutions of various concentrations. With an increase in PEG concentrations permeation rates from solutions; decreased due to an increase in viscosity of the solution. From suspensions, however, permeation rates increased due to an increase in solubility and when the initial drug concentration was constant, permeation rates were found to be greatest from the PEG-water system with the PEG concentration which transported from the solution to the suspension. Permeation rate of 4.0mg/ml p-aminobenzoic acid methyl ester was $26.51\mu$g/ml$\cdot$hr from 5g/100ml PEG solution, and that of 4.0mg/ml benzocaine was $13.17{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}hr$ from 15g/100ml PEG, solution, and that of 2.0mg/ml butamben was $3.8{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}hr$ from 10g/100ml PEG solution. Permeation rate was 7.0 fold in p-aminobenzoic acid methyl, ester and 3.5 fold in benzocaine compared to butamben.

  • The oil in mackerel muscle was extracted using an environment friendly solvent, supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-$CO_2$) at a semibatch flow extraction process and an n-hexane. The SC-$CO_2$ was maintained at a temperature of $45^{\circ}C$ under pressures ranging from 15 to 25 MPa. The flow rate of $CO_2$ (27 g/min) was constant during the entire 2 h extraction period. The fatty acid composition of the oil was analyzed using gas chromatography (GC). Significant concentrations of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) acid and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) acid were present in the SC-$CO_2$ extracted oil. The oil extracted using SC-$CO_2$ exhibited increased stability compared with n-haxane extracted oil. Particles of mackerel oil together with the biodegradable polymer, polyethylene glycol (PEG) were formed using a gas saturated solution process (PGSS) with SC-$CO_2$ in a thermostatted stirred vessel. Different temperatures ($45-55^{\circ}C$), pressures (15-25 MPa) and a nozzle size $400{\mu}m$ were used for PGSS with a 1 h reaction time. The stability of mackerel oil in the particles did not changed significantly.

  • The changes of water absorption and surface area of polydimethylsiloxane-5-fluorouracil devices containing different water soluble additives such as sodium chloride, glycerine, poly-propylene glycol(PPG 400), and polyethylene oxide(PEO 400, 400 and 2000) were investigated. It was confirmed that carriers controlled water absorption and swelling of the devices in the aqueous solutions. The water absorption and the swelling were affected by the osmotic pressure and ionic strength of the aqueous solutions.
