This study was carried out to investigate the dimensional stability of three softwoods (Pinus densiflora S. et Z., Pinus koraiensis S. et Z., Larix kaempferi CARR.) and two hardwoods(Quercus mongolica F., Quercus variabilis BL.) treated with polyethylene glycol(PEG). Existence of PEG in wood was examined by an X-ray diffraction method. Shrinkage of the sample woods decreased with increasing concentration of PEG. The dimensional stability of five species had improved highly in thirty percent solutions of PEG with molecular weight 1000~4000, and the dimension of PEG-treated softwoods was more stable than that of PEG-treated hardwoods. Weight gain and bulking effect of the woods treated with PEG increased with increasing concentration of PEG. X-ray diffractograms of Pinus koraiensis wood treated with PEG showed two peaks derived from PEG crystal at 2𝜃 = 19° and 2𝜃 = 23°. However, the diffractograms of Quercus mongolica wood did not present any peaks caused by PEG crystal. From the result of X-ray diffraction, it was revealed that the content of PEG in Pinus koraiensis wood was higher than that in Quercus mongolica wood.
Japanese Larch(Larix kaempferi) was treated with aqueous solutions(30%, 40%, 50%) of polyethylene glycols(PEG, #1000, #1500, #4000, #6000) for the dimensional stabilization. The antiswelling efficiency(ASE) was measured for the evaluation of the dimensional stabilization. The weight percent gains(WPGs) of the woods treated with 40% solutions were higher than those of the others, and the highest WPG was achieved by treatment with 40% solution of PEG #1500. The ASE decreased with increasing molecular weight of PEG. ASE of woods treated with PEG #1000 and PEG #1500 were higher than those of the others.
In order to increase the dissolution characteristics of relatively water-insoluble metoclopramide (MCP), coprecipitates of MCP with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1000, 4000 or 6000 were prepared in various drug to polymer ratios. The dissolution rate of MCP-PVP coprecipitate was greater than those of MCP alone, MCP-PVP physical mixture and MCP-PEG coprecipitates. The dissolution rate of MCP-PEG 6000 coprecipitate was greater than those of MCP-PEG 1000 and MCP-PEG 4000 coprecipitates. The dissolution half-lives $(T_{50%})$ for MCP alone and 1:5 (w/w) MCP-PEG 6000 coprecipitate were determined by the log-probit method at $37^{\circ}C$ and found to be 4.17 and 0.98 min, respectively.

SAPO-34 catalysts were modified with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and Pb to improve their catalytic lifetime and selectivity for light olefins in the conversion of dimethyl ether to olefins (DTO). Hierarchical SAPO-34 catalysts and PbAPSO-34 catalysts were synthesized according to changes in the molecular weight of PEG (M.W. = 1000, 2000, 4000) and the molar ratio of Pb/Al (Pb/Al = 0.0015, 0.0025, 0.0035), respectively. By introducing PEG into the SAPO-34 catalyst crystals, an enhanced volume of mesopores and reduced acidity were observed, resulting in improved catalytic performance. Pb was successfully substituted into the SAPO-34 catalyst frameworks, and an increased BET surface area and concentration of acid sites in the PbAPSO-34 catalysts were observed. In particular, the concentrations of the weak acid sites, which induce a mild reaction, were increased compared with the concentrations of strong acid sites. Then, the P2000-Pb(25)APSO-34 catalyst was prepared by simultaneously utilizing the synthesis conditions for the P2000 SAPO-34 and Pb(25)APSO-34 catalysts. The P2000-Pb(25)APSO-34 catalyst showed the best catalytic lifetime (183 min based on DME conversion > 90%), with an approximately 62% improvement compared to that of the unmodified catalyst (113 min).
Mediated electrochemical oxidation (MEO) of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) of molecular weight of 1000, 4000 and 20000, was carried out on both platinum (Pt) and titanium-iridium electrodes in 8.0 M nitric acid solution containing 0.5 M Fe(II) and Co(II) ion. The electrochemical parameters such as current densities, kinds of electrode, electrolyte concentration and removal efficiency were investigated in both Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Co(III)/Co(II) redox systems. The PEGs was decomposed into carbon dioxide by MEO in Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Co(III)/Co(II) redox system during 180 min and 210 min at the current density of $0.67A/cm^2$ on the Pt electrode. Removal efficiency of PEGs by MEO was better in Co(III)/Co(II) redox system than Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox system, indicating mediated electrochemical removal efficiency was 100%.
Purpose: To evaluate the correlation between colon transit time (CTT) test value and initial maintenance dose of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 4000 or lactulose. Methods: Of 415 children with chronic functional constipation, 190 were enrolled based on exclusion criteria using the CTT test, defecation diary, and clinical chart. The CTT test was performed with prior disimpaction. The laxative dose for maintenance was determined on the basis of the defecation diary and clinical chart. The Shapiro-Wilk test and Pearson's and Spearman's correlations were used for statistical analysis. Results: The overall group median value and interquartile range of the CTT test was 43.8 (31.8) hours. The average PEG 4000 dose for maintenance in the overall group was $0.68{\pm}0.18g/kg/d$; according to age, the dose was $0.73{\pm}0.16g/kg/d$ (<8 years), $0.53{\pm}0.12g/kg/d$ (8 to <12 years), and $0.36{\pm}0.05g/kg/d$ (12 to 15 years). The dose of lactulose was $1.99{\pm}0.43mL/kg/d$ (<8 years) or $1.26{\pm}0.25mL/kg/d$ (8 to <12 years). There was no significant correlation between CTT test value and initial dose of laxative, irrespective of the subgroup (encopresis, abnormal CTT test subtype) for either laxative. Even in the largest group (overall, n=109, younger than 8 years and on PEG 4000), the correlation was weak (Pearson's correlation coefficient [R]=0.268, p=0.005). Within the abnormal transit group, subgroup (n=73, younger than 8 years and on PEG 4000) correlation was weak (R=0.267, p=0.022). Conclusion: CTT test value cannot predict the initial maintenance dose of PEG 4000 or lactulose with linear correlation.
The Grave encapsulated by lime soil mixture were excavated with clothing and hemp shoes from the Choseon Dynasty in Gooam, Sacheon. Hemp shoes have wood in the center and their surroundings were made of complex materials including herbaceous ones but the front part was lost or became very fragile. We analyzed the hemp shoes and pre-test of consolidant for conservation treatment of hemp shoes. As a result of analyzing, three kinds of plants were identified. For hemp shoes, Oryza spp, hemp, and one kind of dicotyledones were used and it was analyzed that fabrics attached to the back of Dogaengi was cotton. Conservation methods for pre-test of consolidant, Polyethylene Glycol, Paraloid-B72, Dammar gum, Methyl Cellulose and Silicone resin was selected. The solution was sprayed twice in a 24-hour duration. Properties of consolidant was measured; color difference, glossiness difference, folding streangth and tensile streangth. By comparing the results, PEG was confirmed to the most suitable as consolidant. For the conservation treatment, cleaning and strengthening was conducted. For strengthening treatment, PEG 4000 was selected given that the shoes were made of complex materials. The PEG impregnation method was applied with the PEG 4000 concentration gradually changing from 5% to 80% for reinforcement. Then humidity- controlled drying in order to avoid any rapid environment change.
Solid dispersions and inclusion complex were prepared for the enhancement of solubility and dissolution rate of poorly water-soluble ibuprofen(IPF) as a model drug. Polyethylene glycol 4000(PEG4000) and polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) were used for the preparation of solid dispersion. $2-Hydroxypropyl-{\beta}-cyclodextrin(2-HP{\beta}CD)$ was also used for the preparation of inclusion complex. The solubility of IPF increased as the concentration of PEG4000, PVP and $2-HP{\beta}CD$ increased. Solubilization capacity of $2-HP{\beta}CD$ was increased about 10 times when compared to PEG 4000 and PVP. The dissolution rate of drug from solid dispersions and inclusion complex in the simulated gastric fluid was enhanced when compared to pure IPF and commercial $BR4^{\circledR}$ tablet as a result of improvement of solubility. In case of solid dispersions, dissolution rate of drug was proportional to polymer concentration in the formulation. The marked enhancement of dissolution rate of drug by inclusion complexation with $2-HP{\beta}CD$ was noted. However, dissolution rate of drug from solid dispersions and inclusion complex in the simulated intestinal fluid was not significant because IPF was readily soluble in that condition. From these findings, water-soluble polymers and cyclodextrin were useful to improve solubility and dissolution rate of poorly water-soluble drugs. However, easiness and reliability of preparation method, scale-up and cost of raw materials must be considered for the practical application of solid dispersion and inclusion complex in pharmaceutical industry.
The purpose of this study was for the enhancement of dissolution rate of ketoprofen. The solid dispersions composed of ketoprofen(KP) and polyethylene glycol(PEG) 4000 or 6000 were prepared by fusion method at various ratios of KP to PEG (0.5 : 10, 1 : 10, 2 : 10, 3 : 10 and 4 : 10(w/w)) and their physical mixtures were also prepared at the above ratios. Dissolution tests, X-ray diffraction study and differential scanning calorimetry study were carried out. It was found that the dissolution rates of solid dispersion and physical mixture at any ratio of the two components discribed above were greater than that of the pure ketoprofen. X-ray diffraction studies of ketoprofen suggested that less than 1 to 10 ratio of ketoprofen to PEG4000 (or 6000) was required to dispersion amorphous state in the carrier. In addition, the studies of DSC showed that ketoprofen had a sharp endothermic peak at $94^{\circ}C$ but not for the solid dispersion at the same temperature.
Protoplast fusion between isoleucine-, argihine- and thymidine-requiring auxotroph $(Ile^{-}, Arg^{-}, Thy^{-})$ of Lentinula edodes and arginine-requiring auxotroph $(Arg^-)$ of Coriolus versicolor has been achieved using 30% polyethylene glycol (M.W.4000) in 10 mM $CaCl_2$-glycine solution (pH 8.0). Fusion hybrids were selected in the 0.6 M sucrose supplemented minimal media on the basis of nutritional complementation with fusion frequency of $7.4{\times}10{-6}$ The hybrids included both parental and non-parental types in colony morphology, growth rate and isozyme patterns. We succeeded inter-order protoplast fusion between the auxotrophs of Lentinula edodes and Coriolus versicolor overcoming the natural barriers of incompatibility. We examined the characteristics of the hybrids and clarified the fusion rocess using electron microscopy.
