In this study, polyetherimide with pellet state was sulfonated with a chlorosulfonic acid. The volume ratio of carbon tetrachloride (CCI$_4$/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) was 5/1. Therefore, sulfonated polyetherimide of anionic charge and more hydrophilicity were produced. The optimum reaction conditions of sulfonation were that PES/CSA mole ratio was I/I, temperature were lO$^{\circ}$ and reaction time were 3hr. SPEls having ion capacity in the range of 0.2-1.2meq/mg were synthesized. Through FT-IR, sulfonic acid peak was shown at 1020cm$^{-1}$ and 1170cm$^{-1}$ Polymer dispersity index was broad and we confirmed that PEl was hydrophilzed in the measure of contact angle.

Interfacial properties and microfailure modes or electrodeposition(ED) treated carbon fiber reinforced polyetherimide(PEI) toughened epoxy composites were investigated using microdroplet test. ED was performed to improve the interfacial shear strength(IFSS). As PEI content increased, IFSS increased due to enhanced toughness and plastic deformation of PEI. In the untreated cafe, IFSS Increased with adding PEI content, and IFSS of pure PEI matrix showed the highest. On the other hand, thor ED-treated case IFSS increased with PEI content with rather low improvement rate. In the untreated case, neat epoxy resin appeared brittle microfailure mode, whereas pure PEI matrix exhibited more likely ductile microfailure mode. In the ED-treated case, neat epoxy exhibited more ductile fracture compared to the untreated case. Interfacial properties of epoxy-PEI composite can be affected efficiently by both the control of matrix toughness and ED treatment.
Polymer membranes such as poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne)-polyetherimide (PTMSP-PEI) and poly(dimethylsiloxane)- polyetherimide (PDMS-PEI) composite membrane were prepared by solution casting method. To investigate the characteristics of these membranes, the analytical methods such as FT-IR, $^1H-NMR,$ DSC, TGA, GPC, and SEM have been utilized. The number-average (equation omitted) and weight-average (equation omitted) molecular weight of PTMSP were 477,920 and 673,329 respectively. The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of PTMSP was $224^{\circ}C.$ The separation of the gas mixture ($H_2/N_2$) through the composite membranes were studied as a function of pressure. The separation factor (${\alpha}, {\beta},$ quation omitted) of the composite membranes used in this work increased as the pressure of permeation cell increased. The real separation factor (${\alpha}$), head separation factor (${\beta}$), and tail separation factor (equation omitted) of PTMSP-PEI composite membrane were 2.28, 1.17, and 1.96 respectively at ${\Delta}P$ 30psi and $25^{\circ}C.$ (${\alpha}, {\beta}$ and equation omitted of PDMS-PEI composite membrane were 3.70, 1.53, and 2.42 respectively at ${\Delta}P$ 30psi and $25^{\circ}C$.

Amino terminated polyetherimide (AP-PEI) has been synthesized using 2,2'-bis [4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-phenyl]propane dianhydride (BPADA) and m-phenylenediamine. Polyetherimide containing pendant carboxy group (CP-PEI) has also been synthesized by the reaction of BPADA, m-phenylenediamine and 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid. The modified PEIs were used as toughening agent for diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy resin which was cured with nadic methyl anhydride (NMA). Thermal properties, fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$) and solvent resistance of toughened epoxy resin were measured. The $K_{IC}$ of epoxy resin containing 20 phr of AT-PEI was 2.88$MPa{\cdot}m^{0.5}$ without sacrificing thermal properties. The $K_{IC}$ of epoxy resin which contained 20 phr of CP-PEI was 2.82$MPa{\cdot}m^{0.5}$.
The poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PTMSP) and silica-filled PTMSP membranes were prepared by casting from a toluene solution on porous polyetherimide (PEI). FT-IR spectrum, GPC and SEM pictures have been taken to characterize the membranes. The particle size of membrane decreases as silica content of the membrane increases from 23 to 60 wt%, and a uniform distribution of the silica is observed. The separation properties of the gas mixture (32 mol% $H_2$/ 68 mol% $N_2$) through the composite membranes were studies as a function of pressure and percentage of silica. Selectivity values of $H_2$/$N_2$ increased as the pressure of permeation cell and silica content of the membrane increased. The real separation factor($\alpha$), head separation factor($\beta$), and tail separation factor((equation omitted)) of PTMSP-PEI composite membrane were 2.28, 1.58, and 1.44 respectively at $\Delta$P 30 psi and $25^{\circ}C$. $\alpha$, $\beta$, and (equation omitted) of PTMSP-Silica-PEI composite membrane for 60 wt% silica were 3.34, 1.95, 1.72 at $\Delta$P 30 psi and $25^{\circ}C$.

The cure kinetics of blends of epoxy (DGEBA:diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A)/anhydride (NMA:nadic methyl anhydride) resin with synthesized amino terminated polyetherimide (AT-PEI) were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysizer(DMA) under isothermal condition to determine the reaction parameters and gel-vitrification behavior. The fracture toughness of AT-PEI 20phr/epoxy resin system was improved over 224% and 42.5% more than neat epoxy resin and commercial PEI/Epoxy Resin System.
Polyetherimide (PEI) membranes for separators in Zn air batteries were prepared via phase inversion process from casting solution composed of PEI, n-methylpyrolidone (NMP), and polyvinylpurrolidone (PVP). Furthermore, Zn air batteries were fabricated with the separators. The effects of PEI content and PVP addition in the casting solution on the morphology, mechanical strength, ionic conductivity were investigated through SEM, stress-strain test and ac impedance test. The elelctrochemical performances of the batteries were evaluated through galvanostatic discharge analysis. The mechanical strength of the membrane increased with increasing PEI composition in the casting solution. Little effect of PVP addition into the solution on the mechanical strength of the membrane was investigated. The ionic conductivity value decreased with increasing PEI composition in the solution. With addition of PVP, ionic conductivity of membrane increased until 10 wt% to show the maximum value of 0.1 S/cm. In the higher range of PVP addition over 10%, the ionic conductivity decreased with increasing PVP addition. Ionic conductivity of separator strongly affected the capacity of Zn air battery, and the battery assembled with the separator which showed high ionic conductivity showed high capacity.

Water-swollen-hydrogel membranes for gas separation were prepared by dipcoating and thermal crosslinking of poly(vinylalcohol) (PVA) - poly(acrylacid) (PAA) blends on asymmetric porous polyetherimide(PEI) supporters. The polyetherimide supporters, prepared by phase inversion of polyetherimide solutions in N-methylpyrrolidone(NMP) (composition of PEI/NMP=25/75), had good heat and chemical resistane. The coating materials with different blending ratios of PVA/PAA(=90/10, 80/20, 70/30) were characterized with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy(IR) and the water swelling ratios. The permeabilities and the separation factors of carbon dioxide through these membranes were measured by a mass flow meter and gas chromatograph at different temperatures, respectively, under a vacuum mode of downstream.
