As the polyester fiber becomes thinner, thermomigration that is the most important factor deteriorating the washfastness, is more dominant. For improving the washfastness of ultrafine polyester dyed with disperse dye, it is necessary either to decrease the amount of thermomigrated dyes on the fiber surface, or to use a disperse dye containing diester group in the coupling component. This paper is concerned to investigate the relation between the chemical structure of three disperse dyes and their dyeing properties and washfastness. The disperse dye whose molecular size is big, can dye ultrafine polyester with good build-up, and its washfastness is reasonably good. Other disperse dye which has diester group, shows the same dyeing properties as the standard disperse dye, and its washfastness is better than that of the standard disperse dye.
Five temporarily solubilized reactive disperse dyes were synthesized and characterized. They were applied to polyester/cotton blend fabric using one-bath dyeing method without dispersing agent. The dye that has azonaphthalene chro-mophore seemed to not only be exhausted on polyester but also react with cotton. But other dyes were selectively dyed on polyester and showed limited uptake on cotton. Good levelling as well as moderate to good colour fastness was obtained with the dyes on P/C blend fabric.
In foam dyebath assisted with and without solvent (iso-propylacohol) for polyester and polyester(30%)/nylon(70%) (P3/N7) nonwoven fabrics, adsorption behavior of polyester and P3/N7 nonwovens dyed with C.I. Disperse Red 4 (Red 4), C.I. Acid Violet 54(Violet 54) and Red 4/Violet 54 were investigated by determining the K/S value. The K/S values of polyester and P3/N7 nonwovens in the foam dyeing was greatly enchanced by adding the iso-propylalcohol, but these values were not higher than the carrier dyeing. Dyeabilities of polyester/nylon blended nonwoven fabrics to Red 4, Violet 54 and Red 4/Violet 54 in the foam dyeing were influenced by the affinity of dye to fiber.
Textile dyeing with vat dyes has the highest color fastness although one and the same dye of all vat dyes cannot always satisfy every color fastness requirement. So we examined cotton, nylon 6, and polyester fabrics dyed with vat dyes. Cotton, nylon 6 and polyester fabrics were dyed with vat dyes such as C. I. Vat Blue 1, Blue 19, Black 9, Green 1, Orange 2, and Violet 1 containing sodium hydrosulfite and NaOH. Oxidation were carried out by a sodium peroxoborate after dyeing. The dyed materials were soaped at the boil after oxidation. Especially hydrolysis and overreduction for dyed polyester with vats dyes containing -NHCO- and -NH- groups such as C. I. Vat Blue 6, Black 25, Black 27, Red 10, and Green 3 occurred. It seems that these phenomena are due to a high dyeing temperature. Wash and rubbing fastness of nylon are higher than that of cotton and polyester. Light fastness of cotton is higher than that of polyester and nylon.
The dyeing property of direct-spinning type and seaisland type 0.2D micro polyester nonwoven fabrics was characterized by three disperse dyes (Dorosperse Red KFFB, Blue KGBR, Yellow KRL) at $120^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$. Before and after reduction cleaning, dyeing fastness was evaluated and the thermomigaration after heat setting at $180^{\circ}C$ for 60 min were also evaluated. Direct-spinning type fabric showed better dyeing property, wash fastness, and light fastness, but worse rub fastness than seaisland type fabric. The dyeing property and fastness of direct-spinning type fabric increased at higher dyeing temperature, whereas seaisland type fabric exhibited lower dyeing fastness and the increase of thermomigration at higher dyeing temperature. Non-fixed dye in fiber surface was removed by reduction cleaning process, then dyeing fastness was improved and thermomigration decreased. The higher dye uptake of direct-spinning type non-woven fabric caused the increase of dye molecule migration from fiber internal to fiber surface, so this fabric showed larger thermomigration than seaisland type non-woven fabric.
In the prior study, the mechanical properties and the dyeability of the easily dyeable polyester grim(EDY) were investigated. In this study, to interpret the dyeing behavior of EDY with C. I. Disperse Violet 1, the thermodynamic parameters of dyeing, such as the standard affinity, the heat of dyeing(the enthalpy change), the entropy change, the diffusion coefficient, and the activation energy of diffusion, were obtained from adsorption isotherms and dyeing rate at various temperatures and compared to these of regular polyester (REG-PET). The heat of dyeing(the enthalpy change) and the entropy change for EDY showed smaller negative values than those for REG-PET. This means that the dye molecules in the EDY are combined more loosely than in the REG-PET and that is due to the flexibility of polymer chains of EDY. The diffusion coefficients of C. I. Disperse Violet 1 into the EDY were larger than those for REG-PET, and the activation energy of diffusion on EDY was smaller than that on REG-PET.
Polyester fibers and fabrics have been dyed with disperse dyes in alkaline dyebath such as alkaline buffer and alkaline auxiliary(JPH-95) comparing a traditional acidic dyeing. After dyeing the samples were extracted with 100% DMF, and washing and rubbing fastnesses were measured. In dyeing at $100^\circ{C}$ the dyeing rate increased with decreasing fiber denier, regardless of dye baths, whereas the dyeing rates of the same denier fiber increased in the order of alkaline dyeing>acidic dyeing>JPH-95 dyeing. In dyeing at $130^\circ{C}$ the dyeing rate of PET fiber in JPH-95 dye bath decreased compared with the other two types of dye baths. In the time and temperature curve the dye uptake of JPH-95 dyeing was higher than the other two types of dye baths in the range of low temperature$(95~115^\circ{C})$. The equilibrium dye uptake increased in the order of 0.52d>2.04d>0.05d fiber. Washing fastness had no change in all three types of dye baths. But rubbing fastness was not good for alkaline dyeing except black dyes.
This study was carried out to investigate dyeing characteristics of CDP(cation dyeable polyester)/silk knitted fabrics with disperse type cation dyes/acid dyes by one bath dyeing method in comparison with two bath dyeing method in the interests for rationalization of the dyeing process. The apparent color depth(K/S) of the disperse type cation dyes with CDP and that of acid dyes with silk decreased slowly with increasing pH values of dyebath with the exception of sharp decrease at alkali region for CDP. The contamination behavior of CDP by the acid dyes and that of silk by the disperse type cation dyes decreased with progressing of dyeing. The migration ratio(%) of the disperse type cation dyes with CDP is low compared with that of acid dyes with silk. The sediment in mixed dying solution of disperse type cation dyes and acid dyes remarkably less compared with that of regular type cation dyes and acid dyes at $100^{\circ}C$ regardless applying of preventer agent of precipitation. When CDP/silk knitted fabrics was dyed with by with mixtures of disperse type cation dyes/acid dyes one bath or two bath dyeing method, the characteristic of reflectance spectra of CDP components were greatly influenced by disperse type cation dyes and that of silk components by acid dyes. It was confirmed that K/S values of each components of CDP/silk knitted fabrics dyed by one bath dyeing method decreased slightly compared with two bath dyeing method.
The purpose of this study was to examine the change of dyeing ability by K/S values, when dyed in different twisting processes and by one bath system and two bath system, to find possible ways of minimizing the color difference between cotton and polyester in composite yarn. The two types of composite yarn, which had one setting process(CP1) and two setting processes(CP2) were dyed with reactive/disperse dyes in both one bath dyeing system and two bath system. The dyeing ability according to the two different twisting processes was measured, and the values of the CP1 were higher compare to the values of CP2 in both one and two bath dyeing systems. This is because CP1 applied only one setting could shrink dyeing process at 130$^{circ}C$. This shrinkage increased the number of twists in the unit length and increased the yarn density, and this is the reason that the K/S values were measured higher than those of CP2. In wet shrinkage test, in opposition to CP2 only had 0.76$\%$ of the shrinkage rate, CP1 had 3.00$\%$ of the shrinkage rate. Also, the dyeing ability according to the two different dyeing methods was measured, and the values of CP1 and CP2 were both higher when dyed in two bath system. On the other hand, the color differences between cotton and polyester in composite yarns, were smaller for CP2 than that for CP1 and were also smaller in two bath dyeing system than in one bath dyeing system. Therefore, the ways of minimizing color difference between cotton and polyester in composite yarn are to apply enough setting in order to minimize shrinkage in dyeing process and to choose two bath dyeing system.
In the prior studies, we reported that the dye uptakes of C. I. Disperse Violet 1 on polyester fiber in hexane and cyclohexane were higher than those in the other solvents, as the number of carbon atoms of alkanes decreased, the dye uptake increased, and the logarithmic plot of the dye uptakes vs. the solubilities of the dye showed that the dye uptakes are inversely proportional to the solubilities. In this study, for Interpretation of dyeing behavior of C. I. Disperse Violet 1 on polyester in alkanes, the thremodynamic parameters of dyeing, such as standard affnity, heat of dyeing(enthalpy change), entropy change, diffusion coefficient, and activation energy of diffusion, were obtained from isotherms and dyeing rates at different temperature. As the number of carbon atoms of alkanes increased, the standard affinity decreased, but the heat of dyeing(enthalpy change) and the entropy change showed larger negative values. These results mean that as the number of carbon atoms of alkanes increases, the dye uptake decreases, but both the fraction of the dye molecules dyed at relatively highly aligned or compact region of polyester fiber and the regularity of dye aggregates in the fiber become increased. As the number of carbon atoms of alkanes increased, the diffusion coefficient decreased, but the activation energy of diffusion increased. In the alkane of larger number of carbon atoms, because the solubility of the dye is higher, the desorption rate of the dye is faster and the diffusion coefficient is smaller than those in the smaller alkanes. But the energy required to separate the dye molecules from the alkane molecules is much higher because the interaction between the alkane molecule and the dye molecule become strong with the number of carbon atoms.
