  • Specimens of the spionid polychaetes (Polychaeta: Spionidae) were collected and examined in the subtidal shallow waters of Kwangyang Bay, southern coast of Korea, from April 1990 to November 1994. Five species of the genus Prionospio are described and illustrated: Prionospio (Minuspio) multibranchiata Berkeley, 1927, P. (Prionospio) saccifera Mackie and Hartley, 1990, P. (P.) bocki Soderstrom, 1920, P. (P.) membranacea Imajima, 1990, and P. (P.) paradisea Imajima, 1990. These five species of spionid polychaetes are reported for the first time in Korean waters.

  • Specimens of the sabellid polychaetes are exmined. They were collected in the Yellow Sea from Sept. 17 to Oct. 2, 1992 within the framework of Korea-China Yellow Sea Research Joint Program. Additional materials were also provided from the benthic samples collected from the subtidal shallow waters of the Kwang-yang Bay, Korea. Two secies of the genus Euchone (Polychaeta, Sabellidae), Euchone hancocki Banse and Euchone incolor Hartman are described and illustrated. This paper reports the first record of these two sabellids in Korea waters.

  • In this study, we present new records to Korea for three ciliate species[Apogonostomum pantanalense Foissner, 2016; Keronopsis polychaeta (Borror, 1966) Jankowski, 1979; Frontonia canadensis Roque and Puytorac, 1972] collected from marine (F. canadensis) and moss-covered soil(A. pantanalense and K. polychaeta) habitats. We examined the morphology of these three ciliates based on live observations and protargol impregnation. The main characters of the three ciliates are as follows: A. pantanalense: cell size approximately $130{\times}45{\mu}m$, tail-like posterior end, and 6 or 7 ventral cirral pairs elongated to transverse cirri; K. polychaeta: size approximately $140{\times}90{\mu}m$ and approximately 18 frontal coronal cirri and 5 transverse cirri; F. canadensis: cell size approximately $100{\times}50{\mu}m$ and approximately 88 somatic kineties, 3 or 4 vestibular kineties, and 5 postoral kineties.

  • A taxonomic study was carried out on the Perinereis nuntia species group of Korea by using morphological and molecular data (mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I: mtCOI). Two species, P. mictodonta (Marenzeller, 1879) and P. wilsoni (Glasby and Hsieh, 2006), are recognized and redescribed. In this study, mtCOI gene showed a good resolution as molecular marker for species identification of the P. nuntia species group of Korea.

  • A spionid polychaete, Scolelepis (Scolelepis) kudenovi Hartmann-Schroder, 1981, is newly reported from Korean waters with description and illustration. Scolelepis (Scolelepis) kudenovi is characterized by a combination of the following morphological features: the notopodial setae are present on the setiger 1; the occipital tentacle is absent; the branchiae are partially fused to the notopodial postsetal lamellae; the notopodial and neuropodial hooded hooks are bidentate only; the notopodial hooded hooks are present on the posterior setigers. A key to Scolelepis species from Korean waters is provided in this paper.

  • A huge freshwater reservoir (ca. 12,000 ha) will be created when the construction of a 33km dike on a huge mud flat of the Saemankeum areas is established. A large quantity of freshwater will emerge to the adjacent sea from the reservoir through two big gates. Marine organisms outside the dike are expected to frequently experience low salinity waters. To investigate the salinity effects on the dominant metazooplankton in the coastal waters off Saemankeum areas, we measured the survival (Survival 1H and Survival 24H) of 11 different taxa (the copepods Acartia omorii, A. pacifica, Calanus sinicus, Centropages abdominalis, Paracalanus indicus, Pseudodiaptomus inopinus, Tortanus forcipatus, and a hydromedusa, and barnacle nauplius, polychaeta larva, and a chaetognath Sagitta sp.) at salinities of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 psu when the organisms were exposed for 1 and 24 h, respectively. Survival 1Hs of P. inopinus and barnacle nauplius were 100% between 5 and 35 psu, while they were 0% at salinities of 0 and 40 psu. Survival 1Hs of A. omorii and A. pacifica, P. indicus, T. forcipatus, and polychaeta larva were 100% at $salinities\;\geq\;10$ psu, while they were 0% at lower salinities. Survival 1Hs of a hydromedusa and Sagitta sp. were 100% at $salinities\;\geq\;15$ psu, while they were 0% at lower salinities. Survival 1H of C. abdominalis and C. sinicus was 100% at $salinities\;\geq\;20$ psu, while they were 0% at lower salinities. Survival 24Hs of A. omorii, A. pacifica, C. abdominalis, barnacle nauplius, and polychaeta larva were the same as Survival 1 Hs at the same salinity, while those of the other metazooplankton were lower than Survival 1Hs. The results of the present study suggest that low salinity water emerging from big gates may cause the death of the metazooplankton, but the salinities at which death of the metazooplankton occurs may differ by species.

  • A newly recorded species, Nereiphylla hera Kato and Mawatari, 1999 which was originally described from northern Japan, was collected from East Sea in Korea. Our Korean materials of N. hera are distinguished from it congeners by the following characteristics that agree well with the original description of the species: the tentacular cirri are flat and spatulate with a narrow and distinct tip, reaching to segment 4-6, and boarder than their cirrophores; the parapodia possess elongated dorsal cirri. We provide a key for distinguishing the species of genus Nereiphylla from Korean waters.
