Red color light emitting diodes were fabricated using CdSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs). Patterned indium-tin-oxide (ITO) was used as a transparent anode, and oxygen plasma treatment on a surface of ITO was performed. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) was spin coated on the ITO surface as a hole injection layer. Then CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs was spin coated and thermal treatment was performed for the cross-linking of QDs. TiO2 was coated on the QDs as an electron transport layer, and 150 nm of aluminum cathode was formed using thermal evaporator and shadow mask. The device shows a pure red color emission at 606 nm wavelength. Device characteristics will be presented in detail.
Luminescence quenching reactions of photoexcited tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium (Ⅱ) complex cation, $Ru(bpy)_3\;^{2+}$, by dialkylviologens (dimethyl, dioctyl, dibenzyl, methyloctyl, methyldodecyl, and methylbenzyl) were studied in sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS), and poly(vinylsulfonate) (PVS) solutions. The relative quenching rate varies widely with the microheterogeneous media employed: the highest quenching rate is observed for methyldodecylviologen in homogeneous aqueous medium, dibenzylviologen in SDS and PVS solutions, and dimethylviologen in PSS solution; the lowest rate is found for dimethylviologen in homogeneous medium and SDS solution, methyldodecylviologen in PSS and PVS solutions. These results were interpreted in terms of reduction potential of viologens, affinity of $Ru(bpy)_3\;^{2+}$ and viologens to the microparticles, and the structures of the viologen-colloid complexes.
We have fabricated organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) with highly conductive poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene : poly styrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) layer as an anode without using transparent conducting oxide (TCO), which has been modified by adding some organic solvents like sorbitol (So), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N-methyl-pyrrolidone (NMP), dimethylformamide (DMF), and ethylene glycol (EG). The conductivity of PEDOT:PSS film modified with each additive was enhanced by three orders of magnitude. According to atomic force microscopy (AFM) study, conductivity enhancement might be related to better connections between the conducting PEDOT chains. TCO-free solar cells with modified PEDOT:PSS layer and the active layer composed of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and phenyl [6,6] C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) exhibited a comparable device performance to indium tin oxide (ITO) based organic solar cells. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the organic solar cells incorporating DMSO, So + DMSO and EG modified PEDOT:PSS layer reached 3.51, 3.64 and 3.77%, respectively, under illumination of AM 1.5 (100mW/$cm^2$).
Recently, bulk hetero-junction cells have been extensively studied by many researchers. Most of these cells were fabricated by spin coater. However, the spin coating process is not favorable to the large-scaled industry because it is not compatible with roll-to-roll process. One of the alternative methods is Doctor blading. In this study, we fabricated large OPV cells having total area of $100cm^2$. The buffer layer was Poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly-(styrenesulfonate) aqueous dispersion (PEDOT:PSS) and the active material is poly (3-hexythiophene) (P3HT) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blend in the solvent of Chlorobenzene. All of the organic layers were coated by dragging the blade with a speed of 5~20 mm/s on the stage with a temperature of $50^{\circ}C$. As-bladed PEDOT:PSS layer was baked at $120^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes to eliminate the water. The cell structure is patterned ITO substrate/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:PCBM/LiF/Al. The topmost electrode, LiF/Al, was deposited by thermal evaporation. After depositing electrode, and the cell was annealed at $150^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. The measured ISC, VOC, fill factor, and PCE were 2.95 A, 5.86 V, 0.32, and 0.78%, respectively. PCE was quite low but the large active area could be obtained successfully.
We have studied conduction mechanism that is interpreted in terms of space charge limited current (SCLC) region and tunneling region. The OLEDs are based on the molecular compounds, N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD) as a hole transport, tris (8- hydroxyquinolinoline) aluminum(III) $(Alq_3)$ as an electron injection and transport and emitting later, copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK) as a buffer layer respectively. Al was used as cathode. We manufactured reference structure that has in ITO/TPD/$Alq_3$/Al. Buffer layer effects were compared to reference structure. And we have analyzed out luminance efficiency-voltage characteristics in ITO/Buffer layer/TPD/$Alq_3$/Al with buffer-layer materials.
Current-voltage-luminance characteristics of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were measured in the temperature range of 10 K~300 K. Indium-tin-oxide (ITO) was used as an anode and aluminum as a cathode in the device. Organic of N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-di(m-tolyl)-benzidine (TPD) was used for a hole transporting material, and tris (8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum (Alq$_3$) for an electron transporting material and emissive material. And copper phthalocyanine (CuPc), poly(3,4-ethylenedi oxythiophene);poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), and poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) were used for hole-injection buffer layers. From tile analysis of electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminesccnce (PL) spectra of the Alq$_3$, the EL spectrum is more greenish then that of PL. And the temperature-dependent current-voltage characteristics were analyzed in the double and multilayer structure of OLEDS. Electrical conduction mechanism was explained in the region of high-electric and low-electric field. Temperature-dependent luminous efficiency and operating voltage were analyzed from the current-voltage- luminance characteristics of the OLEDS.
We have investigated the effects of hole-injection buffer layer in organic light-emitting diodes using copper phthalocyanine (CuPc), poly(vinylcarbazole)(PVK), and Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) in a device structure of $ITO/bufferr/TPD/Alq_3/Al$. Polymer PVK and PEDOT:PSS buffer layer were produced using the spin casting method where as the CuPc layer was produced using thermal evaporation. Current-voltage characteristics, luminance-voltage characteristics and efficiency of device were measured at room temperature at various a thickness of the buffer layer. We observed an improvement in the external quantum efficiency by a factor of two, four, and two and half when the CuPc, PVK, and PEDOT:PSS buffer layer were used, respectively. The enhancement of the efficiency is assumed to be attributed to the improved balance of holes and elelctrons resulting from the use of hole-injection buffer layer. The CuPc and PEDOT:PSS layer function as a hole-injection supporter and the PVK layer as a hole-blocking one.
Nanocomposites of gold nanoparticles and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by electrostatic interaction. Gold nanopartic1es were stabilized by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) in aqueous medium, and MWNTs were modified by poly(diallyldimethylammonium)chloride (PDDA) in water. The as-perpared Au-MWNT nanocomposites were structurally and electrically characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV/Vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cyclo voltammetry (CV). UV/Vis spectra of Au-MWNT nanocomposites showed the characteristic surface plasmon bands in the range of ~515nm, depending on the stabilizers. There is only slight change on the band shape with variation of stabilizing agents for gold nanoparticles. Through FE-SEM and TEM images, the distribution of gold, nanoparticles on the sidewalls of MWNTs was deliberately investigated on Au-MWNT nanocomposites treated with different stabilizers. XPS and CV showed redistribution of electron densities and changes in the binding energy states of nanopartic1es in nanocomposite respectively.
