Objectives: A lake is a place used by many people, and compared to rivers it is easy for them to become polluted. The water quality in lakes and reservoirs has been worsening recently. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the water pollution characteristics of major lakes in northern Gyeonggi-do Province. Methods: Six lakes were selected as major lakes and were evaluated in terms of water pollution characteristics and eutrophication (as defined by results for $COD_{Mn}$, TOC, SS, Chl-a, T-N and T-P) over one year (from December 2016 through November 2017) in northern Gyeonggi-do Province. Results: The annual average $COD_{Mn}$ was found to be 3.1 mg/L in Onam, 3.6 mg/L in Sanjeong, 4.7 mg/L in Gisan, 4.8 mg/L in Ilsan, and 6.1 mg/L in Jangja. The results of the Korean trophic state index ($TSI_{KO}$ ) value indicated a eutrophic state ($TSI_{KO}$ 59.0) in Jangja lake. The other lakes were classified as being in a mesotrophic state ($TSI_{KO}$ of 38.1 in Sanjeong, 40.2 in Ilsan, 41.9 in Onam, 46.1 in Gisan, and 47.8 in Gomo). Conclusions: Ilsan Lake's water quality is being well maintained. Sanjeong, Onam, and Gisan are appropriate for use as agricultural water. Jangja lake requires efforts for water quality improvement and to prevent the inflow of non-point pollutant sources.

Plankton communities have close relationships with environmental changes in water columns. Thus, the use of plankton as a biological tool for assessing the marine ecosystem health may be effective. Major issue regarding coastal pollution has been usually recognized as phytoplankton blooms or red tides caused by the eutrophication, an increase in concentration of inorganic nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. However, in order to understand the effects of the overall pollution on marine ecosystem, the organic pollutants as well as the inorganic nutrients should be also considered. For understanding the effects of the organic pollution, among the planktonic organisms, heterotrophic bacteria, heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates should be investigated. Generally, there are three approaches for assessing the marine ecosystem health using the plankton taxa or plankton communities. The first one is a community-based approach such as diversity index and chlorophyll a concentration which are common in analysis of the plankton communities. The second is an indiviual-based approach which is to monitor the pollution indicative species. This approach needs one's ability to identify the plankton to species level. The last approach is a bioassay of toxicity, which can be applied to the plankton. A pilot study in Masan Bay was conducted to assess the effects of the inorganic and organic pollution. In this article, a new approach using plankton communities was tentatively presented as a biological tool for assessing the ecosystem health of Masan Bay.

Measures against non-point sources pollution in Saemangeum watershed should be established to control water quality of Saemangeum lake, because non-point sources pollution discharge portions of BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) and TP (Total Phosphorous) in the watershed were 68.4 and 61.4%, respectively. In this study, target regions for the non-point sources pollution control were selected to apply BMP (Best Management Practices) for the agricultural area of Saemanguem watershed in terms of TP that caused eutrophication at the lake. Target regions were selected by the NPSI (Non-point source index) that was calculated by the total 12 indexes at the steps of non-point source production, emission and outflow. Weights of the indexes were determined by the watershed management experts oriented AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) analysis. The target region was selected at the unit of Korean basic administrative district 'Dong/Li'. At the results of NPSI calculations through the GIS (Geographical Information System) tools, two sets of 5 regions were selected in the Man-kyung River and Dong-gin River. The main reason for the selected target regions was livestock activity in the district. The results of this study can be useful for implementing the reduction projects of agricultural non-point sources pollution to control water quality in Saemangeum lake.

Irregular rainfall caused by climate change, in combination with non-point pollution, can cause water systems worldwide to suffer from frequent eutrophication and algal blooms. This type of water pollution is more common in agricultural prone to water system inflow of non-point pollution. Therefore, in this study, the correlation between Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) multi-spectral images and total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and chlorophyll-a with indirect association of algal blooms, was analyzed to identify the usability of UAV image to identify water quality characteristics in agricultural streams. The analysis the vegetation index Normalized Differences Index (NDVI), the Normalized Differences Red Edge(NDRE), and the Chlorophyll Index Red Edge(CIRE) for the detection of multi-spectral images and algal blooms collected from the target regions Yang cheon and Hamyang Wicheon. The analysis of the correlation between image values and water quality analysis values for the water sampling points, total phosphorus at a significance level of 0.05 was correlated with the CIRE(0.66), and chlorophyll-a showed correlation with Blue(-0.67), Green(-0.66), NDVI(0.75), NDRE (0.67), CIRE(0.74). Total nitrogen was correlated with the Red(-0.64), Red edge (-0.64) and Near-Infrared Ray(NIR)(-0.72) wavelength at the significance level of 0.05. The results of this study confirmed a significant correlations between multi-spectral images collected through UAV and the factors responsible for water pollution, In the case of the vegetation index used for the detection of algal bloom, the possibility of identification of not only chlorophyll-a but also total phosphorus was confirmed. This data will be used as a meaningful data for counterplan such as selecting non-point pollution apprehensive area in agricultural area.
The purpose of this study was to analyze chemical water quality, fish trophic guilds, tolerance indicators, and fish community conditions in the Gap Stream and to compare the stream conditions between the unimpacted site and impacted site. This study was conducted in the physically stable season (May 2008) to minimize physical impacts such as flow and hydrological disturbance, and applied the study in the Gap Stream with two sites of unimpacted upstream site (Unim-S), mainly surrounded by forested area and impacted site (Im-S), influenced by the wastewater disposal plants and industrial complex in the urban region. Chemical data analysis showed that the degree of organic matter pollution, based on BOD, and COD, was $2{\sim}3$ fold greater in the Im-S than the Unim-S, and that TP, as eutrophication indicators, was 4.7 fold greater in the Im-S. Also, $NH_3-N$ was in 8.2 fold greater in the Im-S ($6.25\;mg\;L^{-1}$) than the Unim-S ($0.76\;mg\;L^{-1}$), indicating a massive influence of wastewater from the disposal plant. Similar results were found in other chemical parameters. Thus, chemical impacts in the Im-S were evident, compared to the unimpacted site. Evaluations of tolerant indicator species indicated that sensitive species were dominant in the Unim-S (23.9%) and tolerant species were dominant (97.8%) in the Im-S. Condition factor (CF) was averaged 0.95 ($0.68{\sim}1.18$) in the Unim-S and 1.08 ($0.93{\sim}1.22$) in the Im-S. Fish community in the Unim-S and Im-S was categorized as Zacco-community and Hemibarbus-community, respectively, and the community diversity index (H') was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the Unim-S (0.810) than the Im-S (0.466). Overall, our results suggest that the comparison approach of various chemical and ecological indicators provide important information in identifying multiple stressors in the stream ecosystems.

Eutrophication processes of aquatic environment are strictly correlated with the concentration levels of nitrogen, phosphorous, organic matter and biological parameters such as phytoplankton and chlorophylla (Tremel, 1996; Burns et al., 1997; Young et al. 1999; Wei et al.,2000). Accordingly, the monitoring and evaluation of these factors will provide useful information about the health of aquatic ecosystem. However, the traditional types of auqatic chemistry analysis and ecological monitoring of phytoplankton are time-consuming, costly, and further resulting in secondary pollution due to the use of reagents. NIR (near-infrared) spectroscopy, as a rapid, non-destructive, little sample preparation and reagents-free technology (Hildrum et al., 1992), has been extensively applied to the characterization of food (Osborne and Fearn, 1988), pharmaceutical (Morisseau and Rhodes, 1995) and textile materials (Clove et al.,2000). Currently, NIR technology has been used indirectly in inferring lake water chemistry by two approaches, suspended (Malley et al., 1996) or seston (Dabakk et al., 1999), and sediments (Korsman et al., 1992; Malley et al., 1999). In addition, the evaluation of trophic state and the identification of the key factors contributed to the trophication are the key step to restore the damaged aquatic environment. Moreover, an understanding of the factors, which regulate the algal proliferation, is crucial to the successful management of aquatic ecosystem. In the paper, NIR technology will be used to study the environmental factors affecting the algal proliferation in combination with the trophic state index and diversity index. This novel developed system can be applied in monitoring and evaluating allopathic water environment and provide real time information services for the aquatic environment management.

The status and changes of water quality of national fishing harbors and designated ports in East Coast of Korea were analyzed to support establishment effective water environmental management. COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) concentration was satisfied to designated water quality criteria in most areas, but TN (Total Nitrogen) and TP (Total Phosphorus) exceeded the criteria frequently. Also, peak concentration was summer in COD and SS (Suspended Solid), but winter in TP. Eutrophication index of Ganggu and Pohang (old) area were the highest. Pollution index by function of COD, TN, and TP of Ganggu, Pohang, Jumunjin, and Guryongpo was high with gradual increasing recently, on the contrary, that of Samcheok, Imwon, and Chuksan was decreased. Pollution index involving multi-indictors relation to organics and inorganics was necessary for water quality assessment. Designated water quality criteria needed to be improved because the criteria of Jukbyun and Chuksan was applied more strictly compared to the other regions although without difference of environmental characteristics. Furthermore, the criteria notified lately needed to be related to management pollutants from land-based sources. The continuous diagnosis and monitoring on sediment quality within the study area were necessary for prevention of water pollution and eco-friendly disposal of dredged sediment. Especially, monitoring of Designated Ports was implemented partially, however monitoring ratio of National Fishing Har-bors was 7% to whole part. Therefore, systematic and integrated environmental monitoring for ports and harbors with charge of national management was reestablished by strengthening and securing a legal basis.
To understand eutrophication in the upper regions of brackish Lake Sihwa with a limited water exchange, temporal and spatial distributions of pollutants in water and sediment were investigated from March to October in 2005 and 2006. Also, pollution levels of water and sediment were estimated by trophic state index (TSI) and sediment quality guideline (SQG). Total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), organic matter (COD), and chlorophyll $\alpha$ (Chl-$\alpha$) concentrations in the surface waters were largely varied temporally and spatially, and the variations were highest in the middle areas where strong halocline was formed. Chl-$\alpha$ concentrations in the middle area were very high in April (>$900\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) when algal blooms (red tides) occurred. The relationships between TN and Chl-$\alpha$ (r=0.31), and TP and Chl-$\alpha$ (r=0.65) indicated that the algal growth was primarily affected by phosphorus rather than nitrogen. The distribution of COD was similar to that of Chl-$\alpha$, indicating that the autochthonous organic matters may be a more important carbon source, especially in the middle areas. The brackish water regions were classified as eutrophic or hypertrophic based on their TSI values ($69{\sim}76$). In addition, the content of nutrients (especially TP) in surface sediments were classified as severe polluted state, except the upper areas. Major causes of the eutrophication observed were probably due to high nutrients loading from watersheds, the phosphorus release from anaerobic sediment, and long retention time by the limited water exchange through the sluice gates.
Bacterial population, signal compounds of pollution, bacterial productivity, heterotrophic activity and the activities of extracellular enzymes were analyzed four times from July 1994 to April 1995 at Daejin, Galnam, Pohang, and Ulsan in the coastal area of Bast Sea in order to investigate the state of eutrophication. The population of heavy metal resistant bacteria in Pohang was the highest among all stations. The bacterial populations which could utilize C -P compounds (phosphonate) showed the highest at Pohang that was expected for the industrial and agricultural effluents to inpour. It could be useful as an index of expectation about the influx of industrial sewages and agricultural effluents. The activities of extracellular enzymes for the degradation of organic matter were the highest in the Ulsan Chuyongam, but low in Daejin. These results showed positive relationship with the population of heterotrophic bacteria and bacterial productivity The ratio of poly-P and DNA in Pohang was the highest, and that in Ulsan, Galnam, and Daejin consecutively, corresponding with the distribution of heterotrophic bacteria. In case of the heterotrophic activities, each of the stations gives difference of seasonal variation in heterotrophic activities. Bacterial productivity seemed to be dependent on seasons; the highest in summer and the lowest in fall and winter. These seasonal variations of bacterial productivity seems to be similar with those of heterotrophic bacteria. It is suggested that the state of eutrophication could be evaluated by the criteria of the population sizes and the productivities of microorganisms, the amount of poly-P, heterotrophic activity, the activities of extracellular enzymes, etc.
From 2014 to 2016 water quality survey results according to the location and depth of Youngrang Lake are as follows: Distribution of dissolved oxygen in the water depth was investigated by the middle section and the downstream 1st, 3rd, 5th, when investigating bottem 1m interval anoxic layer. In organic matter and nutrient concentration distribution COD upstream 2.8 mg/L, middle section 4.2 mg/L downstream 4.1 mg/L, more than two times higher in bottem layer and TP concentrations showed a similar trend with COD, upstream of 0.047 mg/L, middle section was 0.051 mg/L, downstream of 0.059 mg/L. There was a difference in salinity every survey period the average salinity is lowest with 28.5‰ when the second survey. And the highest with 32.1‰ in the fourth investigation. Korean trophic state index($TSI_{KO}$) were showed eutrophic conditions in the middle section and downstream else showed mesotrophic state in the entire period. In order to evaluate the cause of water pollution Youngrang lake, regression analysis of the relationship between salinity and DO, COD, TN, TP, Chl-a results, $R^2$ is from 0.63 to 0.95 Youngrang lake water quality was found to have a close relationship with salinity due to inflow of seawater. As a result, in order to improve the quality of Youngrang lake efficient incorporation of the amount of water through the seawater influent as it is considered the key.
