The purpose of this study was to understand distribution characteristics of organic matters through concentration of $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$ and TOC in 31 streams in Han River region, and to establish the relationship among organic matter concentration, and discharge load and flow rate. Concentration of $BOD_5$ and TOC in 22 streams were above IV grade except 9, and the average 80.9 % of total organic matter (by TOC) accounted for dissolved organic type. Correlation among organic matter parameters were higher ($r^2$ > 0.78) and the relationship between TOC and $COD_{Mn}$ concentration was higher than $BOD_5$. Ratio of biodegradable organic matter/total organic matter in the 31 streams was estimated at 41.4 % with $BOD_5$ oxidation rate, and 78.0 % with $BOD_5/COD_{Mn}$ concentration ratio. Ratio of $NBOD/BOD_5$ concentration in four sites with $BOD_5/COD_{Mn}$ concentration ratio exceeding 1 ranged from 54.5 % ~ 79.3 %. Among 979 flow rate data measured at 31 streams, 87 % of measured data was below 0.1 cms and increased water pollution under low flow conditions. Correlation between $BOD_5$ concentration and $BOD_5$ discharge load in the watershed was low, and it was revealed that several streams have more $BOD_5$ delivery load than $BOD_5$ discharge load. Results suggest that many biodegradable forms of organic matter are being introduced into the stream from pollutant sources in the watershed.

In order to understand the spatio-temporal distribution of geochemical parametrs in surface sediments of the artificial Lake Shihwa in the vicinity of Kyunggi Hay in Korea, surface sediments were sampled at 14 sites in July 2007 and analyzed by CHN analyzer and ICP/MS. Metal concentrations in the sediments tended to be decreasing from the head to the mouth of the Lake Shihwa because of extreme pollutant discharge from various kinds of anthropogenic sources such as the Banweol and Shihwa Industrial Complex and cities. With the deposition of fine-grained sediments, high metal concentrations were also observed in the central part of lake. Although various programs(improvement of wastewater collection and treatment system, sea-lake water exchange etc) to improve the environmental conditions around the Lake Shihwa after dike construction were carried out, it was not dear to reach a good environmental quality. Therefore, further environmental programs should be conducted continuously for environmental improvement.
Recently, it was realized that a significant portion of pollution from urban areas originates from non-point sources such as construction sites, washoff from impervious surfaces, and sewage input from unsewered areas and combined sewer overflows. Especially, Urban stormwater runoff is one of the most extensive cause of the deterioration of the water quality in streams located in urban area. The objective of this study was to investigate runoff characteristics of non-point pollutants source at the urban area in the Suyeong River. Water quality variations were investigated at two points of Suyeong River during a period of 10 rainfall events. Concentration difference of non-point pollution source appeared big by precedent number of days of no rainfall. In addition, Event mean Concentration (EMCs) that well represents runoff characteristics of storm water during rainfall, was calculated, and runoff pollutants loading was also examined. The probability distribution of EMCs of BOD, COD, TOC, T-N, T-P, and TSS were analyzed and the mean values of observed EMC and the median values of estimated EMCs compared through probability distribution. Other objectives of this study were the characterization of discharge from non-point source, the analysis of the pollutant loads and an establishment of a management plan for non-point source of Suyeong River. Also, It was established that the most important thing for the administration of non-point pollution source is to come up with the solution for the reduction of effluent at the beginning.
This study investigated the distribution behaviors of PM2.5 and PM10 at two air quality monitoring sites, Go-eup (GO) and Backseokeup (BS), located in Yangju City, South Korea. The amounts of emissions sources of pollutants were analyzed based on the Clean Air Policy Support System (CAPSS), and the contribution rates of neighboring cities were enumerated in Yangju. Yangju has a geological basin structure, and it is a city with mixed urban and rural characteristics. The emission concentration of particulate matter was affected by geological and seasonal factors for all sites observed in this study. Therefore, these factors should be considered when establishing policies related to particulate matter. Because the official GO and BS station sites in Yangju are both situated in the southern part of the city, the representativeness of both stations was checked using correlation analysis for the measurement of PM2.5 and PM10 by considering two more sites-those of Bongyang-dong (BY) and the Gumjun (GJ) industrial complex. The data included discharge amounts for business types 4 and 5, which were not sufficiently considered in the CAPSS estimates. Because the 4 and 5 types of businesses represent over 92.6% of businesses in this city, they are workplaces in Yangju that have a significant effect on the total air pollutant emission. These types of businesses should be re-inspected as the main discharge sources in industry, and basic data accumulation should be carried out. Moreover, to manage the emission of particulate matter, attainable countermeasures for the main sources of these emissions should be prepared in a prioritized fashion; such countermeasures include prohibition of backyard burning, supervision of charcoal kilns, and management of livestock excretions and fugitive dust in construction sites and on roads. The contribution rates by neighboring cities was enumerated between 6.3% and 10.9% for PM2.5. Cooperation policies are thought to be required with neighboring cites to reduce particulate matter.

BACKGROUND: Heavy metals discharged from various sources contaminate the soil and water and the residuals can persistently be accumulated. In this study, the concentration of soil heavy metals was assessed over the whole regions of Korea based on the contamination factor and the geoaccumulation index. METHODS AND RESULTS: The data of averaged concentrations of heavy metals and fluorine were collected from the Korean Statistical Information Service (KOSIS) and the research papers published. In order to classify the levels of heavy metal concentration, the contamination index, including the contamination factor and the geoaccumulation index, based on the relative ratio of the actual concentration of heavy metals in the soil to the background concentration was calculated. In addition, the distribution of heavy metals in soils was visualized by using the geographic information system (GIS). As a result, the Cd contamination in the soils was the most concerned. CONCLUSION(S): This study very roughly indicated the outline of heavy metal concentration over the whole regions of Korea. The change in heavy metals' concentration over the time should further be monitored and the larger data of heavy metal contamination are needed for better understanding in the future.
Favorable policies for freight vehicles (i.e., trucks), such as exclusive "Truck-ways," have been proposed, and at the same time restricted policies for freight vehicles have been suggested because transportation of goods by truck aggravates traffic congestion and environmental conditions in urban areas. This study discusses the limitations of assessment processes for freight vehicle route management systems which have been carried out from limited perspectives such as physical distribution efficiency and traffic circulation. The objective of this study is to propose an assessment method of truck route management systems in urban areas which includes more varied criteria. This research modified the two existing assessment indices of physical distribution efficiency and traffic circulation. In addition two new assessment indexes are proposed: (i) exposure indices for population directly influenced by nitrous oxide, a representative pollutant, and (ii) a friction index between trips for attending elementary school and freight vehicle trips. It was found that from the perspective of physical distribution efficiency and traffic circulation, the "before" alternative is better than "after". However, from the aspect of traffic safety and environmental impacts the "after" alternative is better than "before". It is expected that the proposed evaluation method in this study would be useful when identifying reasonable policies for truck route management in urban areas.
In this study, RMA2 and RMA4, the 2-D depth-averaged models, were employed to simulate the two-dimensional mixing characteristics of the pollutants in the natural streams. The velocity and depth were first calculated using RMA2, 2-D hydrodynamic model, and then the resulting flow field was inputted to RMA4, 2-D water quality model, to compute the concentration field. RMA models were verified using the velocity and concentration data measured in S-curved meandering channel. The results showed that the RMA2 model simulated well the phenomenon that the maximum velocity line is located at the Inner bank of meandering channel, and the RMA4 model was well adapted to reproduce the general mixing behavior and the separation of tracer clouds. Comparing model simulations with measured data in the field experiments, RMA2 model simulated well general flow field and tendency that the maximum velocity line skewed toward the outer bank which were found in field experiments. The simulations of RMA4 model showed that the center of the tracer cloud tends to follow the path in which the maximum velocity occurs. In this study, the dispersion coefficients are fine-tuned based on the measured coefficients calculated using field concentration data, and the results show reasonable agreement with predictive equations.

South Korea is a country that emits a large amount of pollutants as a result of population growth and industrial development and is also severely affected by transboundary air pollution due to its geographical location. As pollutants from both domestic and foreign sources contribute to air pollution in Korea, the location of air pollutant emission sources is crucial for understanding the movement and distribution of pollutants in the atmosphere and establishing national-level air pollution management and response strategies. Based on this background, this study aims to effectively acquire spatial information on domestic and international air pollutant emission sources, which is essential for analyzing air pollution status, by utilizing high-resolution optical satellite images and deep learning-based image segmentation models. In particular, industrial parks and quarries, which have been evaluated as contributing significantly to transboundary air pollution, were selected as the main research subjects, and images of these areas from multi-purpose satellites 3 and 3A were collected, preprocessed, and converted into input and label data for model training. As a result of training the U-Net model using this data, the overall accuracy of 0.8484 and mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) of 0.6490 were achieved, and the predicted maps showed significant results in extracting object boundaries more accurately than the label data created by course annotations.

Previous studies on the numerical simulation at the tidal reach of Han River tend to restrict downstream boundary as Jeon-ryu station due to difficulties in gaining cross section data and tidal elevation values at Yu-do. But, in this study, geometries beyond the confluence of Gok-reung stream and Im-jin River are constructed based on the numerical sea map; tidal elevation at the downstream boundary, Yu-do is estimated by harmonic analysis of In-cheon tide gage station so that hydrodynamic and diffusion behavior have been analyzed. The domain ranging from Shin-gok submerged weir to Yu-do is selected (which is 36.8 km in length). RMA-2 and RAM4 developed by Il Won Seo (2008) are applied to simulate flow and diffusion behavior, respectively. Numerical results of flow characteristic are compared with the measured data at Jeon-ryu station. Simulation is carried out from June 23 to 25 in 2006 on the ground that hydrologic data is satisfactory and tidal difference is huge during that period. The result shows that reverse flow occurs 5 times according to the tidal elevation at Yu-do and the maximum reverse flow is observed up to Jang-hang IC, which is 32.9 km in length. Also analysis is focused on the process of generation and disappearance of reverse flow, the distribution of water surface elevation and velocity along the maximum velocity line, and the transport of nonconservative pollutant. Pollutant injected from Gul-po stream spreads widely across the river; however, the size of BOD cloud entering from Gok-reung stream is relatively small because water depth at the mid and left side becomes deeper and maximum velocity occurs along the right bank so that transverse mixing is completed quickly. Finally, mixing characteristic of horizontal salinity distribution is obtained by estimating the salinity input with analytical solution of 1D advection-dispersion equation.

In order to understand distribution characteristics and pollution of heavy metals in the artificial Lake Shihwa in the vicinity of Kyunggi Bay in relation with huge environmental changes, various environmental samples including seawaters, surface sediments and settling particulate matters were collected from Lake Shihwa in 2004. Due to extreme pollutant discharge from various anthropogenic sources such as the Banweol and Shihwa Industrial Complexes and cities, the highest metal concentrations in the samples such as waters, sediments and settling particulate matter were found in inner part of the lake. High metal contents (Cu, Zn and Hg) in sediments were observed at Sts. 2-4 and 9. The contents of Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb in SPMs were high at St. 5 and low in the outer part of the lake. Spatial distribution of heavy metals were mainly controlled various biogeochemical factors and physical mixing as well as input of industrial and municipal wastewaters. Although tile environmental qualities of heavy metals in the lake have been improved partially due to inflow of outer seawater, it is not clear to reach a good environmental quality. Therefore, further environmental programs should be conducted continuously for environmental improvement.
