Purpose: The aim of this study was to observe the surface roughness and surface topography of cobalt-chrome (Co-Cr) alloys with grinding time in dental barrel finishing. Methods: This study involved two types of Co-Cr alloys. Specimens were manufactured with the dimensions 10×10×2 mm. Each specimen was cast according to the manufacturer's instructions. The cast alloys were polished for 35 minutes at intervals of five minutes in an automatic barrel finishing. Specimens were imaged with a three-dimensional optical microscope to measure surface roughness. Results: BC specimens and GM specimens had the highest roughness (Ra) values in the ungrained control group, and the lowest Ra values were measured 20 minutes after grinding. Conclusion: The best conditions for grinding Co-Cr alloy using a dental barrel finishing were a weight ratio of polishing media, water, and compound of 150 g:200 g:5 g, and a rotation speed of 450 rpm. Grinding time to obtain appropriate surface roughness should be limited to 15 to 30 minutes.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of polishing methods on the color stability of composite resins. Materials and Methods: Two bulk-fill and four conventional resin composites were filled in cylindrical molds (6 mm diameter, 4 mm height) and light-cured. The specimens were stored in $34^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 h. Spectrophotometer was used to determine the color value according to the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color space. Each group was divided into three groups according to polishing methods (n = 5). Group 1 was control group (Mylar strip group), group 2 was polished with PoGo, and group 3 was polished with Sof-Lex Spiral wheels. Color evaluation was performed weekly for 4 weeks after immersion in $34^{\circ}C$ distilled water. The results were analyzed by generalized least squares method (P < 0.05). Results: Generalized least squares analysis revealed that Sof-Lex Spiral wheels group showed the significantly lower ${\Delta}E$ values compared to PoGo and control group (P < 0.05). The ${\Delta}E$ values of polished group showed the significantly lower than the ${\Delta}E$ values of unpolished group (P < 0.05). Regarding color changes of composite resins, there was no significant difference between the ${\Delta}E$ values of Filtek Z250 and Filtek Z350 XT Universal restorative in all time intervals (P < 0.05). Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill showed the significantly lower ${\Delta}E$ values compared to other composite resins in 1, 2, 3 weeks (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, polishing methods influence the color stabilities of composite resins. The group polished with Sof-Lex Spiral Wheels showed more resistance to discoloration than group polished with PoGo.

Clinical applications of translucent zirconia as well as traditional zirconia (3 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal, 3Y-TZP) are increasing. For this reason, studies on factors affecting the optical properties of dental zirconia have been continuously reported. The optical effect of dental zirconia may vary depending on the yttria content, the thickness of the prosthesis, the sintering process, polishing, glazing and cementation in laboratory and clinical procedures. Increasing the yttria concentration can reduce the masking effect. Translucency decreases as the thickness of the restoration increases, but the required thickness may vary depending on the properties of the zirconia block. The high-speed sintering method can shorten the manufacturing time, but in some cases, the translucency of the prosthesis may decrease. In addition, the optical properties can be affected by the surface roughness of zirconia and the polishing process. The use of an appropriate colored cement can help with the masking effect of zirconia and can be useful for color matching for more esthetic results.
In this study, a basic study was performed to systematically compare the changes in surface properties according to the post-processing method of the stereolithography (SLA) printing method, which is a photocuring 3D printing method, and to provide information on the post-processing method suitable for the application. Although it was possible to improve some of the transparency of the SLA-type output by regularly changing the irregular microstructure of the surface through polishing, it was difficult to secure sufficient transparency like glass. The change in contact angle characteristics due to grinding showed a tendency to slightly increase as the grinding time increased and the particle size of the sandpaper used was small, but the variation between samples was large and the average contact angle was 77~90°, showing no statistically significant difference. Surface treatment methods other than polishing were tried, and it was confirmed that it was possible to easily and simply improve the transparency by applying a commercially available vehicle scratch remover or silicone oil. In addition, a method for securing high transparency such as glass by using a scratch remover after sequential grinding while reducing the particle size of the sandpaper was proposed. Finally, even after surface treatment through polishing and various methods, it was difficult to secure a contact angle of 90° or more.

Today, there are lots of progresses in the field of lens researches, especially in the microlens fabrication. Unlike normal lenses, microlens has been widely used as a role of improving the performance of photonic devices which increase the optical precision, and also used in the fields of the display. In this paper, polymer microlenses with $300{\mu}m$ diameter were replicated through hot-embossing from nickel mold which was fabricated by micro-EDM. After hot-embossing process, the polymer microlenses have a rough surface due to the crater formed by micro-EDM process, which is projected onto the surface of the lenses. The surface of polymer microlenses was polished using solvent vapor to improve the surface roughness of the microlenses without changing their shape. In the experiment, the surface roughness was improved with the processing time and vapor temperature. Also, the roughness improvement was greatly affected by the solubility difference between polymer and solvent.
Conditioning is a process involving pad surface scraping by a moving metallic disk that is electrodeposited with diamond abrasives. It is an indispensable process in chemical-mechanical planarization, which regulates the pad roughness by removing the surface residues. Additionally, conditioning maintains the material removal rates and increases the pad lifetime. As the conditioning continues, the pad profile becomes unevenly to be deformed, which causes poor polishing quality. Simulation calculates the density at which the diamond abrasives on the conditioner scratch the unit area on the pad. It can predict the profile deformation through the control of conditioner dwell time. Previously, this effect of the diamond shape on conditioning has been investigated with regard to microscopic areas, such as surface roughness, rather than global pad-profile deformation. In this study, the effect of diamond shape on the pad profile is evaluated by comparing the simulated and experimental conditioning using two conditioners: a) random-shaped abrasive conditioner (RSC) and b) uniform-shaped abrasive conditioner (USC). Consequently, it is confirmed that the USC is incapable of controlling the pad profile, which is consistent with the simulation results.

PURPOSE. To investigate the fatigue and fracture resistance of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) ceramic molar crowns on dental implants and human teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Molar crowns (n=48; n=8/group) were fabricated of a lithium-disilicate-strengthened lithium aluminosilicate glass ceramic (N). Surfaces were polished (P) or glazed (G). Crowns were tested on human teeth (T) and implant-abutment analogues (I) simulating a chairside (C, crown bonded to abutment) or labside (L, screw channel) procedure for implant groups. Polished/glazed lithium disilicate (E) crowns (n=16) served as reference. Combined thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TC: $3000{\times}5^{\circ}C/3000{\times}55^{\circ}C$; ML: $1.2{\time}10^6$ cycles, 50 N) with antagonistic human molars (groups T) and steatite spheres (groups I) was performed under a chewing simulator. TCML crowns were then analyzed for failures (optical microscopy, SEM) and fracture force was determined. Data were statistically analyzed (Kolmogorow-Smirnov, one-way-ANOVA, post-hoc Bonferroni, ${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. All crowns survived TCML and showed small traces of wear. In human teeth groups, fracture forces of N crowns varied between $1214{\pm}293N$ (NPT) and $1324{\pm}498N$ (NGT), differing significantly ($P{\leq}.003$) from the polished reference EPT ($2044{\pm}302N$). Fracture forces in implant groups varied between $934{\pm}154N$ (NGI_L) and $1782{\pm}153N$ (NPI_C), providing higher values for the respective chairside crowns. Differences between polishing and glazing were not significant ($P{\geq}.066$) between crowns of identical materials and abutment support. CONCLUSION. Fracture resistance was influenced by the ceramic material, and partly by the tooth or implant situation and the clinical procedure (chairside/labside). Type of surface finish (polishing/glazing) had no significant influence. Clinical survival of the new glass ceramic may be comparable to lithium disilicate.
Adquate friction resistance is needed to prevent pavement slipperiness and to allow vehicles to stop in a reasonable distance. Performance of the aggregates is reduced over time by wear and polishing as a consequence of vehicular traffic. In this research, the objective was to develop a laboratory method to test Indiana gravel aggregates to predict field performance, and determine causes for the range of values amang gravel aggregates. The assessment of gravel sources was primarily on the basis of individual rock types and those proportions comprising the gravel. Polish and friction values were determined in the laboratory with the British Wheel and Pendulum. The gravels of this study were composed primarily of carbonate aggregates that showed considerable variability in polishing thresholds. Igneous and metamorphic constituents polished to a lesser degree and are expected to improve overall aggregate performance. Estimates of the IFV (Initial Friction Value) and PV (Polished Value) for crushed gravel samples can be made based on the percentage of rock types present in the sample. A weighted average is used to make this calculation.
Recently, anti-fouling paints which does not include the poison components such as tin(Sn), copper(Cu) have been increasingly developed in order to inhibit the environmental contamination of the sea water. Moreover, the wear ratios of these anti-fouling paints are very important problem to prolong their life time in economical point of view. In this study, five types of anti-fouling paints as self polishing type were investigated on the relationship between their polarization characteristics and wear ratios. It was verified that there was apparently a good relationship between the wear ratio and polarization characteristics, for example, the wear ratio increased with increasing the impedance ratio, and increased or decreased with the corrosion potential shifting in the negative or positive direction respectively. In addition, the wear ratio decreased with decreasing the corrosion current density. Consequently, it is suggested that we can qualitatively expect the wear ratio by only measuring the polarization characteristics. Therefore, before the examination of the wear ratio was actually carried out in the field, the evaluation of polarization property in the laboratory may give a available reference data for their developments.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the amount of marginal microleakage of 2 light curable GI cements(Fuji II LC & VariGlass), which contain some resin components. 4 volunteers kept on acrylic resin plates, which contained dentin disks with cavities filled with test materials for 2 weeks. The time when polishing was done(5 minutes and 24 hours after filling) and the use of protective agents were varied, so 8 groups with each 6 specimens were tested. After having specimens(disks with cavities filled with materials) penetrated with 1% Methylene Blue solution, specimens were stored in 40% nitric acid solution for 4 days to extract adsorbed dye material. Supernatants of centrifuged samples were diluted 5 times and Spectrophotometer was used to determine the degree of absorption. Dye concentration was calculated through the pre-obtained Linear Regression Curve. The results were as follows. 1. The best result was seen in groups (PF24, PV24) which were protected and polished 24 hours later and the opposite phenomenon was seen in groups(NF24, NV24) which were held without protection and polished 24 hours later. Groups polished S minutes later showed moderate leakage pattern. 2. Groups polished 5 minutes later showed similar leakage amount irrespective of using of protective agent. But statistically insignificant lower values were seen in VariGlass than in Fuji II LC groups, So It was considered that VariGlass may be more resistant to early moisture attack than Fuji II LC. 3. In groups polished 24 hours later, there was no significant difference between materials but was definitely significant difference according to the use of protective agent. If the cement in which polishing will be done 24 hours later, Protective agent should be used to cover the surface.
