  • Inhibition performance of Lornoxicam & Tenoxicam against corrosion of carbon steel in 1M $H_2SO_4$ solutions was investigated by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The inhibition efficiency increased with increasing inhibitor's concentration, but decreased with increase in temperature. Potentiodynamic polarization curves showed that, the inhibitors were of mixed type. The apparent activation energy ($E^*_a$) and other thermodynamic parameters for the corrosion process have also been calculated and discussed. The inhibition of carbon steel corrosion is due to the adsorption of the inhibitor molecules on the surface, which follows Temkin adsorption isotherm. The mechanism of inhibition was discussed in the light of the chemical structure of the undertaken inhibitors.

  • Corrosion inhibition of carbon steel in 2M HCl by some benzohydrazide derivatives (I-III) was studied using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques at $30^{\circ}C$. Polarization studies showed that all the investigated compounds are of mixed type inhibitors. Temperature studies revealed a decrease in efficiency with rise in temperature and corrosion activation energies increased in the presence of the hydrazide derivatives, probably implying that physical adsorption of cationic species may be responsible for the observed inhibition behavior. Electrochemical impedance studies showed that the presence of benzohydrazide derivatives decreases the double layer capacitance and increases the charge transfer resistance. The adsorption of these compounds on carbon steel surface was found to obey Temkin's adsorption isotherm. Synergistic effects increased the inhibition efficiency in the presence of halide additives namely KI and KBr. An inhibition mechanism was proposed in terms of strongly adsorption of inhibitor molecules on carbon steel surface.

  • The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technique using Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) procedures is one of the promising techniques that enable overcoming low sensitivity problems in NMR spectroscopy. We constructed an ODNP-NMR system using a commercial benchtop EPR spectrometer. The $^1H$ NMR peak area of water in aqueous solutions of 4-hydroxy-TEMPO was enhanced more than 95 times in the ODNP-NMR experiments. Our signal enhancement results were about 55% of the previously reported result. This could be due to non-uniform microwave power over a sample and unwanted sample heating by microwave. However, this portable ODNP-NMR spectrometer will be eventually useful for site-specific detection with nano-scale spatial resolutions and molecular dynamics studies with significantly improved signal sensitivity.

  • Broadband metal-dielectric-metal terahertz filters composed of complementary rings are designed and demonstrated. Four samples with different parameters were fabricated. Results measured using THz time-domain spectroscopy system show excellent agreement with simulations. Compared with the broadband filters reported before, the complementary ring structure in our design is insensitive to any polarization at normal incidence due to symmetry of the ring. Furthermore, the influence of structure parameters (such as period, radius, slot width, thickness and incidence angles) on the transmission characteristics has been investigated theoretically. The encouraging results afforded by designing of the filters could find applications in broadband sensors, terahertz communication systems, and other emerging terahertz technologies.

  • The effect of drawing rate on the electrochemical properties of 3003 Al alloys in 5 wt.% NaCl solution was investigated by electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization test, potentiostatic polarization test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)) and surface analyses (OM, SEM, EDS). Four kinds of automotive pipe materials were prepared (raw material, drawing rate = 5, 10, 15%). As the drawing rate of Al alloy tube increased, the pitting corrosion resistance increased due to the enrichment of Al oxides on the surface.

  • In this study, we treated silica nanoparticles with bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]amine (BTMA) silane coupling agent to modify their surfaces. We investigated the effects of BTMA hydrolysis time, BTMA concentration and BTMA treatment time on the degree of silanization reaction of silica nanoparticles. We used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis (EA) and solid state cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to obtain quantitative data. We found the decrease of isolated Si-OH peak intensity at 3747 $cm^{-1}$ and the increase of $-CH_2 $stretching and bending peaks with increasing hydrolysis time, concentration and treatment time of BTMA. EA analysis results also supported this trend. We found a strong effect of BTMA concentration on the degree of silanization of the silica particles, but weak effects of the hydrolysis time and the treatment time.

  • We used dipodal type bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]amine (BTMA) silane coupling agent to modify silica nanoparticles to introduce secondary amino groups on the silica surface. These grafted N-H groups were reacted with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to introduce polymerizable methacrylate groups on the silica surface. After modification reaction, we used several analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis (EA) and solid state $^{13}C$ cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to analyze the effects of reaction time, reaction temperature and used GMA concentration on the modification degree between N-H groups on the silica surface and epoxide groups of GMA. We found increased introduction of methacrylate groups on the silica surface by ring opening reaction of epoxide groups of GMA with N-H groups on BTMA treated silica with increased reaction time, reaction temperature and used GMA concentration within our experimental conditions.

  • Effect of current collecting layer on the cathode was characterized by AC impedance spectroscopy at 800$^{\circ}C$ under flowing air. LSM-YSZ composite cathode showed lower polarization resistance due to the in-crease of triple phase (LSM/YSZ/Pore) boundary length by incorporation of YSZ. Ohmic resistance {{{{ {R }_{1 } }} of LSM-YSZ was higher than that of pure LSM however because in-plane resistance of the cathode was fair-ly high due to its high specific resistivity. To reduce the in-plane resistance of LSM-YSZ cathode cathode side current collecting layer was required. Ohmic resistance {{{{ {R }_{1 } }} was reduced after forming LSM current col-lecting layer on the LSM-YSZ cathode. In case of pure LSM cathode the formation of Pt, or LSCO current collecting layer reduced polarization resistance {{{{ {R }_{p } }} but ohmic resistance {{{{ {R }_{1 } }} was relatively constant. After annealing of LSM cathode with Pt current collector at higher temperature polarization resistance {{{{ {R }_{p } }} was in-creased but ohmic resistance {{{{ {R }_{1 } }} was constant. These phenomena indicate that Pt or LSCo current col-lecting layers act as a catalytic layer for oxygen reduction of pure LSM cathode. LSCO current collector was effective in reducing the ohmic and polarization resistance of LSM-YSZ cathode.

  • Polarization behavior and corrosion inhibition of copper in acidic chloride solutions containing benzotriazole were studied. Pourbaix diagrams constructed for copper in NaCl solutions with different BTAH concentrations were used to understand the polarization behavior. Open circuit potential (OCP) depended not only on chloride concentration, but also on whether a CuBTA layer was formed on the copper surface. Only when the (pH, OCP) was located well in the CuBTA region of the Pourbaix diagram, a stable corrosion inhibiting CuBTA layer was formed, which was confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and a long-term corrosion test. The OCP for the CuBTA layer decreased logarithmically with increasing [Cl-] activity in the solution. A minimum BTAH concentration required to form a CuBTA layer for a given NaCl concentration and pH were determined from the Pourbaix diagram. It was found that 320 ppm BTAH solution could be used to form a corrosion-inhibiting CuBTA layer inside the corrosion pit in the sprinkler copper tube, successfully reducing water leakage rate of copper tubes. These experimental results could be used to estimate water chemistry inside a corrosion pit.
