남극 브랜스필드 해협에서 침강입자의 금속원소 특성 (Behaviors of Metals in the Settling Particles in the Bransfield Strait, Antarctica)

  • Sediment trap samples were collected to find out characteristic behaviors of metals in the settling particles by using time-series sediment traps at 678m and 1678m water depths in the Bransfield Strait from December 27th, 1999 to December 26th, 2000. Total mass fluxes at the intermediate water depth (678m water depth) were high in the austral summer and low in the austral winter, whereas at the deep water depth (1678m water depth) they showed high values in both the summer and winter. Total mass fluxes were generally higher in the deep water depth than in the intermediate water depth, which indicates that a substantial amount of sediments are laterally transported by strong currents into the deep basin from the shallow water depths. Aluminium contents also showed large seasonal variations with high values in the winter and low values in the summer. On the contrary, organic carbon contents were high in the summer and low in the winter. Al contents were negatively correlated with organic carbon contents, which may be ascribed that detrital particles are diluted by organic matter produced by phytoplankton in the surface waters. Metals measured in this study exhibited three characteristic behaviors; 1) a positive correlation with Al-Ti, Fe, Mn, V, Co, and Ba, 2) a negative correlation with Al-Cd and Zn, 3) no relationship with Al-Sr, Cu, Cr, Ni. Terrestrial materials may act as a major source fer metals that are positively correlated with Al, and organic matter may be a major source for metals that are negatively correlated with Al. Enrichment factor (EF) of Fe, Mn, Ba, Vi Co, Sr, Cr, and Ni ranged from 0.5 to 1.5, whereas EF of Zn, Cu, and Cd showed much higher values than 1.

횡충격하중을 받는 빙해선박 구조물의 파단에 관한 연구 (On the Fracture of Polar Class Vessel Structures Subjected to Lateral Impact Loads)

  • Single frame structures with notches were fractured by applying drop impact loadings at room temperature and low temperature. Johnson-Cook shear failure model has been employed to simulate the fractured single frame structures. Through several numerical analyses, material constants for Johnson-Cook shear failure model have been found producing the cracks resulted from experiments. Fracture strain-stress triaxiality curves at both room temperature and low temperature are presented based on the extracted material constants. It is expected that the fracture strain-stress triaxiality curves can offer objective fracture criteria for the assessment of structural fractures of polar class vessel structures fabricated from DH36 steels. The fracture experiments of single frame structures revealed that the structure on low temperature condition fractures at much lower strain than that on room temperature condition despite the same stress states at both temperatures. In conclusion, the material properties on low temperature condition are essential to estimate the fracture characteristics of steel structures operated in the Northern Sea Route.

  • 본 연구에서는 저독성 용제에 용해도가 있는 열가소성 폴리우레탄(TPU, Thermoplastic Polyurethane)을 합성하고 폴리우레탄 합성시 사용되는 사슬연장제 및 NCO/OH 비에 따른 물성 변화를 알아보았다. 또한 합성된 열가소성 폴리우레탄을 이용하여 난접착재질용 저독성 프라이머를 제조하고 접착특성을 알아보고자 하였다. TPU 합성시 r(NCO/OH) = 2.0 이상인 경우에는 폴리올 및 이소시아네이트의 종류에 관계없이, 저독성 용제에 용해도가 저하되는 결과를 나타냈으며, non polar한 구조를 가지고 있는 접착증진제보다는 polar한 구조를 가지고 있는 접착증진제의 접착력이 우수하게 나타났다.

단일 비트 이하 오류 정정을 위한 극 부호용 선 처리 복호기법 (Low-Latency Polar Decoding for Error-Free and Single-Error Cases)

  • NAND 플래시 메모리를 포함하는 저장 매체의 경우 초기 상태에서 메모리 셀의 상태가 매우 우수하기 때문에, 오류가 없거나 단일 오류가 발생하는 경우가 지배적이다. 무-오류와 단일-오류에 대한 처리는 저장 매체의 시스템에 있어서 전체 시스템 성능에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요소가 된다. 전통적인 polar code 복호기법은 무-오류 또는 단일-오류에 대한 독립적인 검출이 불가능하기 때문에 일반적인 복호화 기법을 따르며 다른 오류 발생 경우와 동일한 수준의 지연 시간을 가진다. 본 논문에서는 저장 매체에서 빈번하게 발생하는 무-오류 또는 단일-오류에 대한 검출 및 정정을 일반적인 복호화 과정에 앞서 처리해줌으로써, 전체 복호화 과정에 필요한 평균적인 지연시간을 감소시키는 기법을 제안한다. 실험 결과에 따르면 무-오류 또는 단일-오류에 대한 제안하는 선 처리 (pre-processing) 기법을 적용할 경우 (1024, 512) 극 부호에 대하여 일반적인 복호화기법 대비 평균 지연시간을 약 64% 줄일 수 있다.

Simulation of tissue differentiation around acetabular cups: the effects of implant-bone relative displacement and polar gap

  • Peri-acetabular bone ingrowth plays a crucial role in long-term stability of press-fit acetabular cups. A poor bone ingrowth often results in increased cup migration, leading to aseptic loosening of the implant. The rate of peri-prosthetic bone formation is also affected by the polar gap that may be introduced during implantation. Applying a mechano-regulatory tissue differentiation algorithm on a two-dimensional plane strain microscale model, representing implant-bone interface, the objectives of the study are to gain an insight into the process of peri-prosthetic tissue differentiation and to investigate its relationship with implant-bone relative displacement and size of the polar gap. Implant-bone relative displacement was found to have a considerable influence on bone healing and peri-acetabular bone ingrowth. An increase in implant-bone relative displacement from $20{\mu}m$ to $100{\mu}m$ resulted in an increase in fibrous tissue formation from 22% to 60% and reduction in bone formation from 70% to 38% within the polar gap. The increase in fibrous tissue formation and subsequent decrease in bone formation leads to weakening of the implant-bone interface strength. In comparison, the effect of polar gap on bone healing and peri-acetabular bone ingrowth was less pronounced. Polar gap up to 5 mm was found to be progressively filled with bone under favourable implant-bone relative displacements of $20{\mu}m$ along tangential and $20{\mu}m$ along normal directions. However, the average Young's modulus of the newly formed tissue layer reduced from 2200 MPa to 1200 MPa with an increase in polar gap from 0.5 mm to 5 mm, suggesting the formation of a low strength tissue for increased polar gap. Based on this study, it may be concluded that a polar gap less than 0.5 mm seems favourable for an increase in strength of the implant-bone interface.

동해 아극전선 해역의 수중음향환경 및 저주파 음파전달 양상 (Underwater Acoustic Environment and Low Frequency Acoustic Transmission in the Sub-Polar Front Region of the East Sea)

  • To investigate low frequency acoustic transmissions in the Sub-Polar Front(SPF) of the East Sea, numerical experiments are conducted with Range dependent Acoustic Model(RAM) using Circulation Research of the East Asian Marginal Seas(CREAMS) data and Autonomous Profiling Explorer(APEX)) data. Significant seasonal variations of sea water properties are existed across the Sub-Polar Front(SPF) region from the north and the south. The model results show that Transmission Loss(TL) decrease(about 20dB) with ideal front in the warm region whereas TL increase(about 25dB) with ideal front in the cold region. Regardless of season(both in summer and winter), when the sound source is located in the cold region of the SPF, the model results show weak TL, compared to the case of the source in the warm region(Maximum difference of TL reaches 28dB). This difference between the cases when the source is located in the cold region and the warm region, is accounted for from the different vertical profiles of sound speed in both regions.

Holocene Variations of Organic Carbon Contents in Lake Langer of King George Island, South Shetland Islands, West Antarctica

  • A sediment core drilled from Lake langer on King George Island was analyzed for a variety of textural md geochemical properties along with $^{14}C$ age dates. These data were combined with published records of other cores to provide a detailed history of Holocene variation of total organic carbon (TOC) contents with respect to terrestrial paleoclimate change. The lithologic contrast of the lower diamicton and upper fine-grained sediments shows the glacier activity and subsequent lake formation. Low TOC contents fluctuated during the diamicton deposition whereas the increase of TOC began with the lake formation during the postglacial period that started about 5,000 yr B.p More notable are the distinct TOC peaks that may imply enhanced primary productivity during the warm period. The uniform and low TOC contents may reflect the limited productivity during the evolution of the lake. However, the recent TOC readvance clearly indicates gradual warming on King George Island. However, the paleoclimatic signature in the terrestrial lake environment during the Holocene seems to be subtle and less distinct, compared to the marine environment.

Axenic purification and cultivation of an Arctic cyanobacterium, Nodularia spumigena KNUA005, with cold tolerance potential for sustainable production of algae-based biofuel

  • A psychrotolerant cyanobacterium, Nodularia spumigena KNUA005, was isolated from a cyanobacterial bloom sample collected near Dasan Station in Ny-${\AA}lesund$, Svalbard Islands during the Arctic summer season. To generate an axenic culture, the isolate was subjected to three purification steps: centrifugation, antibiotic treatment and streaking. The broad antibacterial spectrum of imipenem killed a wide range of heterotrophic bacteria, while the cyanobacterium was capable of enduring both antibiotics, the remaining contaminants that survived after treatment with imipenem were eliminated by the application of an aminoglycoside antibiotic, kanamycin. Physical separation by centrifugation and streaking techniques also aided axenic culture production. According to the cold-tolerance test, this mat-forming cyanobacterium was able to proliferate at low temperatures ranging between 15 and $20^{\circ}C$ which indicates the presence of cold-tolerance related genes in N. spumigena KNUA005. This suggests the possibility of incorporating cold-resistance genes into indigenous cyanobacterial strains for the consistent production of algae-based biofuel during the low-temperature seasons. Therefore, it is needed to determine the cold-tolerance mechanisms in the Arctic cyanobacterium in the next research stage.

남극 세종기지에서의 대기 중 PCB 모니터링 (Year-round Monitoring of Atmospheric Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) at the King Sejong Station in the Antarctic)

  • Atmospheric levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at the King Sejong station were monitored for one year using passive air samplers. Low-chlorinated PCB homologues were predominant in all samples. PCB levels were observed to decrease with distance from the station, which may indicate that a significant part of PCBs could be of local origin. Although the level of PCBs at the King Sejong station is very low (${\Sigma}_9PCB$ (18, 52, 101, 118, 128, 138, 153, 180, 187): $2.3\;pg\;m^{-3}$) probably due to decrease in the global PCB emissions, it is one order of magnitude higher than a background level in the Antarctic. Based on this preliminary study, more interpretation on PCB data and meteorological conditions is required.

Gravity wave activities in the polar region using FORMOSAT-3 GPS RO observations

  • FORMOSAT-3 was launched in April of 2006. It consists of six low earth orbit (LEO) satellites that will be eventually deployed to an orbit at 800 km height. Its scientific goal is to utilize the radio occultation (RO) signals to measure the bending angles when the GPS signals transect the atmosphere. The bending angle is then used to infer atmospheric parameters, including refractivity, temperature, pressure, and relative humidity fields of global distributions through inversion schemes and auxiliary information. The expected number of RO events is around 2500 per day, of which 200 events or so fall into the polar region. Consequently, the FORMOSAT-3 observations are expected to play a key role to improve our knowledge in the weather forecasting and space physics research in the polar region. In this paper, we use temperature profiles retrieved from FORMOSAT-3 RO observations to study the climatology of gravity wave activity in the polar region. FORMOSAT-3 can provide about 200 RO observations a day in the polar region, much more than previous GPS RO missions, and, hence, more detailed climatology of gravity wave activity can be obtained.
