The IMO Polar Code was adopted by Res.MSC.385(94) and Res.MEPC.264(68) and will enter into force on 1 January 2017. The Polar Code will affect design and equipment of ships intending to operate in polar areas. In this study, the requirements in the Polar Code are analysed from the perspective of class.
The quality control of ocean observations data is becoming a major issue as real-time observational data and information services have increased recently. Therefore, it is necessary for oceanographic instruments to calibrate. In this paper, we first introduce the CTD calibration system and traceability. Next, CTD calibration procedures and estimation of uncertainty of measurement are described. The expanded uncertainty (k = 2) of the temperature, pressure and conductivity are 0.$0.003^{\circ}C$, $6.0{\times}10^{-5}$ and 0.006 mS/cm respectively. Finally, the excellence of CTD calibration and its measurement capability has been proven by comparing the inter-calibration result of KIOST and Sea-Bird Electronics (SBE). CTD calibration residuals are less than ${\pm}0.0001^{\circ}C$, ${\pm}0.001$ MPa, ${\pm}0.0001$ S/m for SBE 3plus temperature sensor, SBE 19plus pressure sensor and SBE 4C conductivity sensor respectively.
We tested the combined effects of increased partial pressure of $CO_2$ ($pCO_2$) and temperature on the reproduction and survival of the copepod Calanus sinicus from Asan Bay, the Yellow Sea under laboratory conditions to understand the impact of acidification on copepods. Egg production rate, survival rate, and fecal pellet production of C. sinicus were not affected by 1305 ppm $pCO_2$ or with combined treatments of temperature and $pCO_2$, including $8^{\circ}C$ and 289 ppm $pCO_2$ (ambient), $8^{\circ}C$ and 753 ppm $pCO_2$ (high $pCO_2$), $12^{\circ}C$ and 289 ppm $pCO_2$ (high temperature), and $12^{\circ}C$ and 753 ppm $pCO_2$ (greenhouse), for 5 or 10 d of exposure. However, egg hatching success of C. sinicus decreased significantly in the greenhouse treatment compared with the ambient or the high $pCO_2$ treatments. These results suggest that a combined treatment ($pCO_2$ and temperature) affected egg viability more than a single treatment($pCO_2$).
To examine the effects of increased $CO_2$ concentration and seawater temperature on the photosynthesis and growth of forest forming Ecklonia cava (Laminariales, Phaeophyta), sporophytic discs and gametophytes were cultured under three $pCO_2$ concentrations (380, 750, 1000 ppm), four temperatures (5, 10, 15, $20^{\circ}C$ for sporophytes; 10, 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$ for gametophytes), and two irradiance levels (40, $80{\mu}mol$ photons $m^{-2}s^{-1}$) for 5 days. Photosynthetic parameter values ($ETR_{max}$, $E_k$, and ${\alpha}$) were generally higher as sporophytic discs were grown under low temperature and increased $CO_2$ concentration at 750 ppm. However, photosynthesis of Ecklonia sporophytes was severely inhibited under a combination of high temperature ($20^{\circ}C$) and 1000 ppm $CO_2$ concentration at the two photon irradiance levels. The growth of gametophytes was maximal at the combination of 380 ppm (present seawater $CO_2$ concentration) and $25^{\circ}C$. Minimal growth of gametophytes occurred at enriched $pCO_2$ concentration levels (750, 1000 ppm) and high temperature of $25^{\circ}C$. The present results imply that climate change which is increasing seawater temperature and $pCO_2$ concentration might diminish Ecklonia cava kelp beds because of a reduction in recruitments caused by the growth inhibition of gametophytes at high $pCO_2$ concentration. In addition, the effects of increased temperature and $pCO_2$ concentration were different between generations - revealing an enhancement in the photosynthesis of sporophytes and a reduction in the growth of gametophytes.
We investigated latitudinal changes in mesozooplankton community structure during a cruise between October 16 and November 30 of 2007 from four distinctive regions in the northwestern Pacific Ocean: Warm pool area (longitude $135^{\circ}$ line), Philippine EEZ (PEEZ), Japan EEZ (JEEZ), and East China Sea (ECS). Major taxa of numerical importance were Clausocalanidae (Clausocalanus spp.), Oncaeidae (Oncaea spp.), and Oithonidae (Oithona spp.) in oligotrophic regions, however Paracalanidae (Paracalanus spp.) was the most abundant group in the ECS. Mesozooplankton size group of <1 mm dominated in PEEZ and WP (48% and 56%, respectively), but mesozooplankton (>1 mm) were of importance in the JEEZ and ECS (34% and 38%, respectively). Mesozooplankton biomass and abundance were high in the JEEZ and ECS, and low in the oligotrophic WP and PEEZ waters, with positive relationship with both total Chl-a and heterotrophic protist biomass. Latitudinal change in mesozooplankton community structure was related with water temperature, with copepods such as Lucicutia spp. and Pleuromamma spp. being present only in warm waters. The geographical expansion of mesozooplankton with a preference for warmer waters could potentially be useful as an indicator for detecting ocean warming.
We analyzed the characteristics of meiofaunal communities in the northern part of Jeju Island and the environmental factors affecting the meiofaunal communities. For the analysis of the communities, subtidal sediments containing meiofauna were collected from 6 sites (3 shallow sites and 3 deeper sites) on the northern coast of Jeju Island in April, June, August, and October 2017. The sediment samples were collected by SCUBA using a syringe. After isolating and counting meiofauna from the sediment using a series of sieves and centrifugation, the density of the meiofauna was expressed as individuals/10 ㎠. Density of meiofauna was lower in August compared to April and June, and the density determined in October was higher than August. During April and June, the meiofaunal communities at the shallow sites (i.e., ST 1, 2, and 3) were significantly different from the meiofaunal communities at deeper sites (ST 4, 5, and 6, p < 0.01). However, such spatial variation in the meiofaunal communities was not obvious in August and October. The most dominant meiofaunal taxa were harpacticoids, followed by nematodes and nauplius larvae. These three taxa accounted for 90% of the total meiofauna density. Abundance of harpacticoids and nematodes showed a significantly negative correlation with the water depth. BIO-ENV analysis indicated that the total organic nitrogen (TON) and the water temperature exerted a significant influence over the meiofaunal communities at the sampling sites.
The black scraper Thamnaconus modestus was a commercially important fish species in the 1980s, but suddenly its commercial significance decreased in the 1990s mainly due to continuous overfishing. Recently, in order to reverse the depleted stocks of the black scraper and help the species recover, seed production technology has emerged. This has led to the farming of the black scraper in several parts of the southern coast of Korea. Since detailed research on its metabolism in relation to water temperature has been scanty, this was the investigative focus of the present study. The standard metabolism rates of the black scraper (9-10 months old, total length=$22.6{\pm}0.8cm$, wet weight=$140.3{\pm}13.9g$) were measured at seven different water temperature settings (12, 15, 17, 20, 23, 26, $28^{\circ}C$) to understand the relationship between metabolism and water temperature. Relationships between water temperature (WT) and oxygen consumption rate (OCR) were obtained as SOCR (weight-specific oxygen consumption rate) = 0.0117WT - 0.0135 ($r^2=0.9351$) and IOCR (oxygen consumption rate per individual) = 1.8160WT - 5.4007 ($r^2$ = 9428). The $Q_{10}$ (temperature sensitivity), an indicator of the sensitivity of biological function to temperature, was analyzed. In our experiment, when the water temperature increased, the $Q_{10}$ value decreased. The $Q_{10}$ value was 6.27 in waters where the temperature ranged from $12-15^{\circ}C$ and this was much higher than the values obtained in waters where temperatures ranged between (1) $15-23^{\circ}C$ and (2) $23-28^{\circ}C$. Consequently, it was shown that the black scraper is a warm water species and inhabiting waters in the temperature range from $15-28^{\circ}C$ is deemed appropriate.
According to the recent observation by NOAA(US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), 2015 is the warmest year based on global average temperature since 1880. The air temperatures in the Arctic have been rising at almost twice the global average and the extent and thickness of sea ice in the Arctic have declined. And the warming process in the Arctic is accelerating rapidly. These impacts of drastic change in sea ice caused by climate change in the Arctic threaten the eco-system service and biodiversity in the Arctic. This study intends to estimate the economic value on changes in eco-system services and biodiversity of the Arctic caused by climate change. The result of the valuation indicates that the total benefit from improvement of ecosystem in the Arctic ranges from 318.6 billion won to 715.9 billion won per annum. Replication scenarios can be explored into two broad categories in future studies: scenarios in consideration of conflicts of different stakeholders and scenarios based on wider or narrower definition of biodiversity in the Arctic.
In order to ascertain latitudinal variation of lipid contents and compositions in copepods, we collected warm water copepod species (Euchaeta sp. and Pleuromamma spp.) from four different regions from low (sub-tropical) to mid (temperate) latitudes in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. Total lipid contents of Pleuromamma spp. were about 11 $ug{\cdot}ind^{-1}$ with little latitudinal variation, whereas Euchaeta sp. showed slightly higher lipid content (20 $ug{\cdot}ind^{-1}$) than Pleuromamma spp. with latitudinal gradient (low at subtropic and high at temperate). Wax esters, known as the major storage lipid classes, were found to be the dominant lipid classes (accounting for more than 35% of total lipids) in Euchaeta sp., whereas in Pleuromamma spp., phospholipids, known as cellular membrane components, were the dominant lipid classes. However, the exception was specimens from warm pool region exhibiting dominance in storage of lipids as a form of triacylglycerols. Among fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA : 22:6(n-3)) (about 35% of total fatty acids), were most abundant in Euchaeta sp., while saturated fatty acids (SAFA), specially hexadecanoic acid (16:0) (about 30% of total fatty acids), were most abundant in Pleuromamma spp.. Among the neutral fraction of lipids, phytol, originated from the side chain of chlorophyll, was found in all samples which generally indicate active copepods feeding on algae. While only trace amounts of short-chain fatty alcohols were found in Pleuromamma spp., significant amounts of fatty alcohols were found in Euchaeta sp.. Particularly, significant amounts of long chain monounsaturated fatty alcohols (20:1 and 22:1), generally found in cold water species, were found in Euchaeta sp. from low latitudes. The latitudinal variation of trophic lipid markers in these copepods could be significantly related with in-situ food availability and species-specific diet preference. The result of this study suggests that the lipid contents and compositions in copepods may not only indicate their nutritional condition and feeding ecology but also provide insight into species-specific living strategies under different environmental conditions (i.e. water temperature, food availability).
