  • A size-biased Poisson distribution is defined. Its characterization by using a recurrence relation for first order negative moment of the distribution is obtained. Different estimation methods for the parameter of the model are also discussed. R-Software has been used for making a comparison among the three different estimation methods.

  • This study shows the variation of poisson's ratio according to stress for the Cretaceous sandstones and shale in the Euiseoung Subbasin. To make a mechanical experiment, samples prepared with 3.0 cm in diameter and 6.2 cm in length were used in testing stress and strain. Generally poisson's ratio has been considered as one of properties, but contrary to steel, the test result makes sure that poisson's ratio has functional relation to stress. I had used four methods to calculate poisson's ratio, Poisson's ratio shows considerable different results according to the calculating, method but it has similar tendency in an elastic limit. Poisson' s ratio increases rapidly and is distinguished clearly in internal fracture region according to the calculating method. Poisson's ratio of sandstone and shale is different from one another in low and high stress regimes, but it is linearly proportional to the stress in an elastic regimes, that is, ${\nu}_t={\;}{\nu}_0+P_{\sigma}({\nu}_0$:first stage Poisson's ratio, ${\nu}_t$:poisson's ratio, P: poisson's coefficient, $\sigma$:stress). Poisson's ratios of two kinds of rock samples show continuous variation from 0.1 to 0.21 in an elastic regime. The variation of poisson's ratio is much wider in an internal fracture regine. It varies from 0.22 to 0.45 in sandstone, which is out of elastic regime.

  • Herein, the closed-form expressions of the magnetic field due to an axially symmetric body such as a right cylinder, are derived. The magnetic field due to a right cylinder is converted from the gravity gradient tensor using Poisson's relation; the magnetic field induced by a constant magnetization can be obtained from the gravity gradient tensor with a constant density. Because of the axial symmetry of the cylinder, the expressions of gravity gradient tensor are derived in cylindrical coordinate and then transformed into Cartesian coordinates for the three components of the magnetic field using an arbitrary magnetization direction.

  • The elastic material constants, stiffness constants ($c_{11}$, $c_{12}$, and $c_{44}$), are three unique coefficients that establish the relation between stress and strain. Accurate knowledge of mechanical properties and the stiffness coefficients for silicon is required for design of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) devices for proper modeling of stress and strain in electronic packaging. In this work, the stiffness coefficients for silicon as a function of temperature from $-150^{\circ}C$ to $+25^{\circ}C$ have been extracted by using the experimental measurements of Poisson's ratio (${\nu}$) of silicon in several directions.

As the result, d and E, they are kinds of granite, which contain much albite than others were proved to be strong by mechanical tests and the correlation moduli were proved to be more than 0.8 except P wave velocity-Poisson's ration relation when examined Elastic moduluous -Poisson's ration, P, wave velocity-Uniaxial compression strength, Elastic modulous -Uniaxial compression strength and Uniaxial compression strength-Poisson's ration correlation function graph.

  • Composite materials have been employed in the various engineering applications due to high mechanical performances including high strength-weight ratio and high degree of free formability. Due to complex manufacturing process, however, it can have intrinsic randomness in the material constants which affect the deterministic behavior of the composite structures. In this study, we suggest a formulation for stochastic finite element analysis considering the spatial randomness of Poisson's ratio. Considering the reciprocal relation between elastic moduli and Poisson's ratios in the two mutually orthogonal axes, one of two values of Poisson's ratio can be expressed in terms of the other. Using this, the relation between stress resultants and strains is derived in the ascending order of power of the stochastic field function, which can be directly used in the formulation to obtain the coefficient of variation of responses. The adequacy of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by comparison with the results of Monte Carlo analysis.

  • In this study, we consider the simultaneous estimation of the parameters of the distribution of p independent Poisson random variables using the weighted loss function. The relation between the estimation under the weighted loss function and the case when more than one observation is taken from some population is studied. We derive an estimator which dominates Tsui and Press's estimator when certain conditions hold. We also derive an estimator which dominates the maximum likelihood estimator(MLE) under the various loss function. The risk performances of proposed estimators are compared to that of MLE by computer simulation.

  • The Titius-Bode's relation has been historically successful in predicting the location of Ceres in the solar system, while its physical basis remains hidden. In this study, we attempt to answer the question of whether the Titius-Bode's relation is universally valid for exoplanetary systems with plural exoplanets. For this purpose, we statistically study the distribution of the ratio of the orbiting periods of two planets in 32 exoplanetary systems hosted by a single star. We only consider the period ratios derived from exoplanets orbiting a single star since celestial objects under investigation are kept as simple as possible and free from uncertainties such as the mass of the host star. We find that the distribution of period ratios of two exoplanets appears inconsistent with that derived from the Titius-Bode's relation using the χ2 test. We also found that the distance distribution in exoplanetary systems unlikely follows the uniform distribution or the Poisson's distribution. It is noted, however, that more rigorous statistical tests should be carried out to reach a more certain conclusion.

  • Engineering properties such as compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio of geopolymer concrete (GPC) and steel fibre reinforced geopolymer concrete (SFRGPC) have been obtained from standard tests and compared. A total of 15 specimens were tested for determining each property. The grade of concrete used was M 40. The percentages of steel fibres considered include 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75% and 1%. In general, the addition of fibres improved the mechanical properties of both GPC and SFRGPC. However the increase was found to be nominal in the case of compressive strength (8.51%), significant in the case of splitting tensile strength (61.63%), modulus of rupture (24%), modulus of elasticity (64.92%) and Poisson's ratio (50%) at 1% volume fraction of fibres. An attempt was made to obtain the relation between the various engineering properties with the percentage of fibres added.

  • A simple method to measure the elastic modulus E and Poisson's ratio v of diamod-like carbon (DLC) films deposited on Si wafer was suggested. Using the anisotropic etching technique of Si we could make the edge of DLC overhang free from constraint of Si substrate. DLC film is chemically so inert that we could not on-serve any surface damage after the etching process. The edge of DLC overhang free from constraint of Si substrate exhibited periodic sinusoidal shape. By measuring the amplitude and the wavelength of the sinu-soidal edge we could determine the stain of the film required to adhere to the substrate. Since the residual stress of film can be determine independently by measurement of the curvature of film-substrate com-posite we could calculated the biaxial elastic modulus E/(1-v) using stress-strain relation of thin films. By comparing the biaxial elastic modulus with the plane-strain modulus E/(1-{{{{ { v}^{2 } }}) measured by nano-in-dentation we could further determine the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio independently. This method was employed to measure the mechanical properties of DLC films deposited by {{{{ { {C }_{6 }H }_{6 } }} rf glow discharge. The was elastic modulus E increased from 94 to 169 GPa as the {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} increased from 127 to 221 V/{{{{ {mTorr }^{1/2 } }} Poisson's ratio was estimated to be abou 0.16∼0.22 in this {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} range. For the {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} less than 127V/{{{{ {mTorr }^{1/2 } }} where the plastic deformation can occur by the substrate etching process however the present method could not be applied.
