  • The The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual liquefaction occurrence site in Pohang area and to analyze the ground characteristics of Pohang area using the data of the National Geotechnical Information DB Center and to calculate the liquefaction potential index. Based on the results, the distribution of soil classification in Pohang area and the risk of liquefaction under various earthquake accelerations were prepared. As a result of the study, soils in Pohang has the soil characteristics that can cause the site amplification phenomenon. In the analysis through liquefaction hazard maps under earthquake scenarios, it is found that the liquefaction occurred in the area of Heunghae town is more likely to be liquefied than other areas in Pohang. From these results, it is expected that the study on the preparation of liquefaction hazard maps will contribute to the preparation of countermeasures against liquefaction by predicting the possibility in the future.

  • The air quality data is important for understanding and analyzing a surrounding influence. In that light, it is positively necessary for a propriety assessment to determine a location of the air quality monitoring sites. In this study, the climate analysis about temperature and wind, using the meteorological data in the Pohang, is conducted to do that. In the next stage, we distinguished the wind by east-west or north-south component, which has less correlation than temperature, analyzed and divided the wind sector. As the result, the wind circumstance of the Pohang is divided into major 5 wind sector; that is the urban area, the northeast coastal area, the east ocean and the west mountainous area. We think that an analysis on detailed wind sector by utilizing the numerical simulation is needed.

  • In world trade, the vessel traffic in major routes has been congested due to the rapid increase of cargoes and shipping tonnages. The patterns of vessel traffic have also been complicated and diversified. Therefore it was necessary that the Vessel Traffic Service(VTS) should be established in order to enhance the safety of navigation, to prevent the loss of life and damage to the environment. The first advanced radar surveillance system(LevelIII-VTS) was introduced in Pohang, Korea in 1993 and in 13 other ports later. While the hardware of Korea VTS is equal to that of an advanced country, the software, specially the operation manual, the recruitment and education of VTS operator, and the VTS service area is behind that of Russia, USA, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore and others. After researching and investigating. the VTS equipment and service area of many countries, and analyzing the IMO regulations relevant to VTS and the traffic pattern and accident of Pohang port, the most efficient VTS service area should be established in Pohang. According to the analysis of the preceding studies and research on VTS, the worldwide VTS areas are recognized under the following conditions: First, the service area should be extended over at least radar coverage taking into account of traffic flow, traffic density, the degree of danger to navigation and harbour condition in order to provide all possible services. Second, the established service area should be subdivided and systematized to render reliable VTS services, such as the allocation of VHF frequency and reporting procedure in each area. In conclusion, the VTS service area of Pohang must be established and operated over 10 miles from shore(radar site) covering the radar coverage, so as to include the area of traffic congestion and high density traffic flow.

  • Recently porous metal has been used as supporting metal in planar type SOFC. In order to search optimum alloys for porous metal support and estimate the stability of metal-supported SOFC at high temperature, it is necessary to investigate the oxidation behaviors of porous material for metal support in comparison with dense material. Oxidation tests of porous and dense stainless steels were conducted at $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. Since the specific surface area of porous material is much larger than that of dense material, surface area should be considered in order to compare the oxidation rate of porous stainless steel with that of dense stainless steel. The specific surface area of porous body was measured using image analyzer. The weight gain of porous stainless steel was much greater than those of dense stainless steels due to its larger specific surface area. considering the specific surface area, the oxidation rate of porous stainless steel is likely to be the same as that of dense stainless steel with the same surface area. The change in chromium content in stainless steel during oxidation was also investigated. The experimental result in chromium content in stainless steel during oxidation corresponded with the calculated value. While the change in chromium content in dense stainless steel during oxidation is negligible, chromium content in porous stainless steel rapidly decreases with oxidation time due to its large specific surface area. The significant decrease in chromium content in porous stainless steel during oxidation may affect the oxidation resistance of porous stainless steel support and long term stability of metal-supported SOFC.

  • It is believed that geological survey, drilling and geophysical survey which was carried out on Tertiary deposits in Pohang is a valuable but through the studying of many Tertiary sediments in Japan discovered many questions on analysis of final report prepared by National geological survey. The main reason is: 1. The seismic sound velocity which have regulated in the final report prepared by geological survey for Tertiary deposits in Pohang was 1,500-2,000m/sec in spite of oil bearing sediments of same age in Japan are 2,000-3,800m/sec. These may means the requirement of reconsideration of seismic velocity for Tertiary deposits in Pohang and required to have a dipper drilling. 2. Stratigraphically, geophysically, and paleontologically, the Tertiary deposits in Pahang land area is similar with that of Nishiyama-Hunakawa formations of Akita oil field in Japan. Nishiyama-Hunakawa formation is the main oil bearing formation in Japan. 3. Those valcanic rock including andestitic rock and liparitic rock which have extensively distributed over either at land area or at sea bottom, assumed by geological survey as the base of Tertiary sediments. But in case of Japan many oil bearing deposits are in over laid by these kind of volcanic rock. Therefore a possible of same condition with Japan is presumable on Tertiary sediments in Pohang. 4. It is believed that the Tertiary sediments of land area in Pohang is the extension of offshore basin but is wandering that the final report submitted by geologic survey have not remain any word on report of ECAFE discribed so much problematics as followed: A. Although it was assumed that no great thickness exceeding 1,000 meters, or major structures would be encountered in the Tertiary offshore sequence, it was hoped that shallow hydrocarbon deposits might be found, because these sediment are lithologically similar to those of the same age in the producing area of the northwest Honshu region of Japan where hydrocarbon are extracted from depths of only 500 to 600 meters. B. Four possible hydrocarbon trap conditions are represented in the survey area: anticlinal folds, faults, pinch outs, along the igneous basement and lateral facies changes. C. Most of the prime possible reservoir area are beyond the 50 meter water depth mark, except for the structures in Yonil Bay. D. Despite the shallowness of the offshore basin, sufficient trap condition exist in the area to warrant further exploration for hydrocarbon. 5. All of the problems mentioned above have gave us a strong reasons to have us hesitating to make a final conclusion on Tertiary problems in Pohang, before to have a drill to a depth to 3,000 meters or more whatever it is the Tertiary or a Mesozoics below 1,000 meters.

  • This study has been carried out to estimate aboveground biomass and net primary production(NPP) in an average 41-years-old Quercus variabilis stand of Gongju area, 45-years-old Quercus variabilis stand of Pohang area, and 54-years-old Quercus variabilis stand of Yangyang area. Ten sample trees were cut in each forest and soil samples were collected in July to August, 2000. Estimation for aboveground biomass and net primary production were made by the equation model $Wt=aD^b$ where Wt is oven dry weight in kg and D is DBH in cm. Total aboveground biomass was 91.31ton/ha in Gongju area, 207.6ton/ha in Pohang area, and 71.39ton/ha in Yangyang area. The aboveground biomass 207.6ton/ha in Pohang area is the highest biomass production among the amount of biomass in Quercus variabils stands reported in Korea. The proportion of each tree component to total aboveground biomass was high in order of bolewood, bolebark, branches and leaves in the three forests. Aboveground total net primary production was estimated at 7.8ton/ha in Gongju area, 11.5ton/ha in Pohang area, and 6.40ton/ha in Yangyang area. There were at least 2 times higher total aboveground biomass in Pohang area than in the Gongju and Yangyang areas because of climate difference among the study areas.

  • The gravity measurement has been conducted at 113 stations with an interval of about 1km along the national road of about 120km running from Busangdong to Pohang through Waekwan, Daegu, Youngchun and Aankang. The subsurface geology and structure along the survey line is interpreted from Bouguer anomaly by applying Fourier method and Talwani method for two dimensional body. The mean depth of Moho discontinuity is 31.4km, and the depth decreases very slowly from inner continent toward east coast. The depth of Conrad discontinuity increases from 11km at the east coastal area to 17km at the inner continental area, and especially increases rapidly in the area between Waekwan to Busangdong. The depth of basement of Kyoungsang Basin inereases from near Waekwan toward Daegu upto about 4. 8km, and increases rapidly to reach the maximum depth of about 8.5km at 8km east of Daegu. But it starts to decrease from the place of 10km west of Youngchun, and is about 7.2km at Youngchun and about 6km at 6km east of Youngchun. The depth starts to increase smoothly beyond this point, and is 7km at 15km east of Youngchun. From this point, the depth starts to decrease again, and is about 3.8km at Ankang. The depth of basement of Pohang Basin is 500m at Pohang and about 650m at 5km west of Pohang. A massive granite body which is considered to be a part of Palgongsan Granite exposed at the depth of 1. 5km at 9km west of Youngchun. Another massive granite body is situated underneath the Pohang Basin at depth of 1.5 to 2km, and sedimentary rocks of Kyoungsang Group and volcanic rocks are distributed between Pohang Basin and this granite body. Finally, Yangsan Fault is identified at about 2.5km east of Ankang.

  • The purpose of this study was to propose HACCP system implementation properly and to secure the food safety of school foodservices in Pohang city since the proper facilities and equipment should be key factors in food safety and production. So this study was designed to evaluate existing equipment in food production area, receiving and dining area, and employee facilities. Questionnaire was mailed to 107 school foodservice dietitians in Pohang area and 97 were responded (90.7% response rate). Approximately sixty percent of foodservices were not available separate receiving or polluted area, fifty one percent were installed screen door for insecticidal and temperature and humidity control, and these environmental conditions were hard to keep kitchen dry and sanitary condition. Usually public schools were better equipped than private schools. Forty three percent of school foodservice had initial use of non-foodservice, opened before 1994, and thirty three percent of elementary school foodservice. Among employee facilities, hand washing sanitation stand was prepared seventy nine percent (78.9%) of school foodservices. Dietitians chose outworn equipment and facilities (30.9%), difficulties of maintaining standard temperature and humidity for foodservice (20.6%), lacking separate receiving or polluted area (13.4%), indirect contamination of water hoss (10.3%), and lacking employee facilities (10.3%) as critical points to correct in school foodservice. Therefore governmental regulating agencies must review and approval of plans prior to new construction or extensive remodeling of school foodservice facilities. In addition to these requirement, plan must be set-up step by step to implement HACCP system properly.
