  • The partitioning of dry matter into seed and pod-shell is important because yield increase can be achieved by improving the distribution rate of assimilation products to seeds. The present study was undertaken to characterize whether the partitioning of dry matter into seed was shoot- or root-controlled through graftiong techniques. Self- and reciprocal-grafts were made among four soybean genotypes, which were 'Baekunkong', 'Suwon 168', and two local soybeans with black seed coat (hereafter referred to as the 'black soybean'), 'Kangleungjarae' and 'Keumleungjarae'. Self-grafted black soybeans showed lower ratio of seed to pod-shell dry wight than self-grafted Baekunkong and Suwon 168. Varying the shoot genotypes in grafts resulted in significant differences in growth characters as well as pod and seed dry weight per plant at physiological maturity. There were significant effects of shoot genotypes on the ratio of seed to pod-shell dry weight, indication that the partitioning of dry matter into seed and pod-shell should be shoot- rather than root-controlled. The grafts with large pod-shell dry weight tended to partition relatively smaller dry matter into seed than pod-shell.

  • This paper presents a study on the effectiveness of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique for reconstruction of wind pressure field as applied to a cylindrical shell roof based on simultaneously measured wind pressure data. The influence of wind loading mode truncation on the statistics of dynamic pressures and wind load effects are investigated. The results showed that truncation of higher wind loading modes can have more noticeable influence on the maximum and minimum pressures that the standard derivation (STD) values. The truncation primarily affects the high-frequency content of the pressures. Estimation of background response using wind loading modes is more effective than the use of traditional structural modal analysis.

  • An experimental study was undertaken to obtain the basic information on the effect of seed moisture content and cylinder speed of thresher on the mechanical damage and seed germination in soybeans. The moisture content at maturity was the highest in stern and followed by seed and pod-shell for Hwang-keurnkong and also the highest in stern and followed by pod-shell and seed for Danyeobkong in that order. The variation in the moisture contents of stern, seed, and pod-shell in a day on the 7th day after maturity showed gradually decreasing trends from 7 :00 in the morning to 17 :00 in the afternoon. On the 14th day after maturity, the moisture content of pod-shell was higher than that of seeds up until 11 :00 in the morning but it was higher in the seeds after that. The greater the cylinder speed and the higher the moisture content of seeds, the higher the percentage of seeds damaged was resulted. At the same time, the percentage of seeds damaged was higher in Hwangkeumkong large seed sized than in Danyeobkong small seed sized at the same cylinder speed. Considering the seed yield, percentage of seeds damaged, percentage of seeds germinated, threshing efficiency and drying, etc., the appropriate cylinder speed was believed to be about II m per second and the most appropriate moisture contents of seeds for threshing were believed to be about 15-20%.

  • This study was designed to investigate variation of pinitol content in different parts of seventeen legume species including silk tree (Albizia julibrissin). D-pinitol has been demonstrated to exert insulin-like and anti-inflammatory effects. These legumes were collected from Gyeongsangbuk-Do in Korea. Significant difference in pinitol content was observed among 17 different legume species. However, it was the highest in sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata). The highest pinitol content was observed in leaf followed by stem, pod shell, seed and root among plant parts. Legume plants which had higher pinitol content in leaves were chinese pea shrub, bastard indigo, wild cowpea and sericea lespedeza, having 59.9 mg/g, 62.2 mg/g, 69.6 mg/g and 65.4 mg/g, respectively. Stem of astragali radix showed the highest pinitol content among all leagumes, which was 34.0 mg/g. In case of root, kudzuvine showed the highest pinitol content followed by licorice and chinese pea shrub, which were 24.6 mg/g, 16.9 mg/g, and 16.5 mg/g, respectively. However, in the case of pod shell and seed, only lablab purpureus and sericea lespedeza showed the highest pinitol content 52.5 mg/g (for pod shell) and 24.9 mg/g (for seed), respectively. Concluding, the sericea lespedeza showed the highest total pinitol content of whole plant followed by chinese redbud, chinese pea shrub, bastard indigo and silk tree. Considering the pinitol content and harvesting yield, sericea lespedeza can be used as a practical medicinal herb.

  • Six soybean cultivars were used to study their seed development and germinability after flowering, in 1977 and 1978. The earlier varieties showed the faster seed development, but indeterminate types resulted in slower development. The earliest germinability was found in 15 to 25 days after flowering when dried with the pod shell. The germination of the seeds dried without pod shell, however, was inhibited significantly in early seed filling stages. Regular germinability of the Hill cultivar in a cold test was 40-45 days after flowering, or 10 to 15 days earlier than the physiological maturity.

  • Four compounds with antioxidant activity were isolated from the MeOH extract of peanut shells (pod) and identified as 5,7-dihydroxychromone (1), eriodictyol (2), 3',4',7-trihydroxyflavanone (3), and luteolin (4) by electron impact-mass spectrometry (EI-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses. The relationship between antioxidant activity and chemical structure of the isolated compounds with their analogues [(-)-epicatechin, quercetin, taxifolin] was examined by measuring 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity and using the 2-deoxy-D-ribose degradation system. The order of antioxidant activity on the basis of DPPH radical-scavenging was quercetin = (-)-epicatechin (6.0 molecules) > taxifolin (4,5 molecules) > 4 (luteolin; 4.0 molecules) > 2 (eriodictyol; 2.5 molecules) > 3 (3',4',7-trihydroxy-flavanone; 2.0 molecules) > 1 (5,7-dihydroxychromone; 0.5 molecules). On the other hand, using the 2-deoxy-D-ribose degradation system, the order of antioxidant activity was quercetin > 4 >> (-)-epicatechin ${\geq}\;2\;{\geq}$ taxifolin > 3 > 1. These compounds from peanut shells may provide defensive measures against oxidative stress and insects in the soil.
