  • Objectives : Portulaca oleracea (PO) have been used as a traditional medicine to treat inflammatory diseases in Korea. However, the anti-inflammatory effect of PO ethanol extract on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation is not well-known. Therefore, this study was performed to identify the anti-inflammatory effect of PO on LPS induced inflammatory. Methods : Identification of PO was conducted by comparison with purified standards by HPLC. To measure out the cytotoxicity of PO, author performed the MTT assay. To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of PO, author examined the inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin, (IL)-1β and IL-6) on RAW 264.7 cells. Author also examined molecular mechanisms such as mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and nuclear factor-B (NF-κB) activation by western blot. Results : Three major components (peaks 1, 2, 3) were detected in both varieties and peak 1 was characterized as caffeic acid, peak 2 as p-coumaric acid, and peak 3 as ferulic acid by comparison of chromatographic properties with authentic standards. Extract from PO itself did not have any cytotoxic effect in RAW 264.7 cells. PO inhibited LPS-induced productions of inflammatory mediators such as NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines in RAW 264.7cells. In addition, PO inhibited the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2), c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) and NF-κB activation in RAW 264.7 cells. Conclusions : Above experiment data can be an important indicator for the identification of PO and this study suggest that treatment of PO could reduce the LPS-induced inflammation. Thereby, PO could be used as a protective agent against inflammation.

  • Background: Due to the continuous demand for fish coupled with decline in capture fisheries, there is the need to increase aquaculture production to meet the demand. Aquaculture is faced with high cost of feeding since fish oil and fish meal are expensive. In view of this, there are calls to explore alternatives that are cheap and reliable. Objectives: This study on Oreochromis niloticus was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing fish oil (FO) with palm oil (PO) at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% on muscle fatty acid and proximate composition as well as growthrelated enzyme activities and mRNA expression. Methods: Oreochromis niloticus were fed five experimental diets (33% crude protein and 10% crude lipid) for 8 weeks. Feed had variation in fish oil and palm oil contents. After the 8 weeks feeding trial, five fish were sampled from each tank (15 from each treatment) and euthanized using an excess dose of tricaine methane sulfonate (MS-222 at 200 mg/L). Fatty acid and enzyme activities were analyzed using standard protocols. Also, RT-qPCR was used to quantify the expression levels of selected growth-related genes. Results: Fish fed 25% PO recorded the least muscle protein content and was significantly lower than the group fed 100% PO. Paired box protein 7 (Pax-7) enzyme activity was significantly higher in the group fed 50% PO compared to the groups fed 25% PO and 100% PO, while caplain-3 (Capn-3) was significantly lower in the group fed 0% PO compared to all other groups. There was a significant difference among treatments with respect to mRNA expression of Pax-7 and Capn-3. Group fed 25% PO had significantly lower mRNA expression of Pax-7, while the group fed 75% PO recorded significantly higher mRNA expression of Capn-3 compared to groups fed 0% PO, 25% PO, and 100% PO. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that Igf-I and Igf-II mRNA expression have significant correlation with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids content in muscle. Conclusion: The results suggest muscle protein content could be modified if FO is replaced with PO. Also, mRNA expression of Pax-7 and Capn-3 is affected by replacing FO with PO.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the epidemiological properties of salmonellosis of poultry farms in Kyongbuk province during the relied from November 1998 to November 1999 And antibiotic susceptibility and biochemical characteristics of 120 Salmonella cultures isolated from chicken samples were also investigated. The results obtained through this study were summarized as follows, 1. Among 667,200 chickens of 31 flocks in 17 layer farms and 9 broiler farms, 61,350 chickens of 31 flocks were died with salmonellosis. The death rate of 25 farms varied from 0.1% to 75.0%, and the average death rate was 9.2%. 2. According to etiological agents, fowl typhoid was shown the most predominant outbreak among the salmonellosis during a year, which accounted for 8R.0%(22/25) of the total case 3. The serotypes of 120 Salmonella isolates were identified as 7 strains(5.8%) of S pullorum, 10 strains(8.4%) of S typhimurium and 103 strains(85.8%) of S gallinarum. 4. Most outbreak of fowl typhoid were prevalent on the layer chicken farms(77.1%), and the summer season(45.5%) also appeared the most hazardous season during the year. 5. It seemed that the Hyline breed(70.6%) was the most susceptible among the layer chicken breeds, and followed by Isabrown(23.5%), Tetra(5.9%) in order. 6. In layers, 76.4% of fowl typhoid occurred commonly from 14 to 40 weeks including the early laying peroid, but in broiler farms, all cases was outbreak within first second weeks. 7 All the strains of S pullorum were resistant to lincomycin(Lm), penicillin(Pm), and steptomycin(Sm), but sensitive to amikacin(Ak), ampicillin(Am), cephalothin(Ce), ciprofloxacin (CiP), chloramphenicol(Cm), colistin(Co), enrofloxacin(Enr), furazolidone(Fu), gentamicin(Gm), kanamycin(Km), neomycin(Nm), polymyxin(Po), and teracycline(Tc). • Ga-doped $LiFePO_4$ cathode materials were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. The microstructural characteristics and electrochemical performances were systematically investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, charge-discharge cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Among the as-prepared samples, $LiFe_{0.96}Ga_{0.04}PO_4$ demonstrates the best electrochemical properties in terms of discharge capacity, electrochemical reversibility, and cycling performance with an initial discharge capacity of $125mAh\;g^{-1}$ and high lithium ion diffusion coefficient of $1.38{\times}10^{-14}cm^2s^{-1}$ (whereas for $LiFePO_4$, these were $113mAh\;g^{-1}$ and $8.09{\times}10^{-15}cm^2\;s^{-1}$, respectively). The improved electrochemical performance can be attributed to the facilitation of Li+ ion effective diffusion induced by $Ga^{3+}$ substitution.

  • Previously, we have shown that nitric oxide (NO) directly activates the Maxi-K channels. In the present study, we have investigated whether NO has prolonged effects on the Maxi-K channels reconstituted in lipid bilayer. Application of S-nitroso-N-acetyl-D, L-penicillamine (SNAP), a NO donor, induced an immediate increase of open probability (Po) of Maxi-K channel in a dose-dependent manner. When SNAP was removed from the cytosolic solution, the Po did not simply returned to, but irreversibly decreased to a level lower than that of the control Po. At 0.2 mM, (Z)-[N-(3-Ammoniopropyl)-N-(n-propyl)amino] diazen-1-ium-1,2-diolate (PAPA-NO), another NO donor, produced a similar increase of Po and decrease of Po upon washout. The increasing effects of SNAP on Po were not blocked by either 50 U/ml superoxide dismutase (SOD) or 2 mM N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) pre-treatments. However, NEM appears to be ineffective when applied after SNAP. These results suggest that NO can modulate Maxi-K channel via direct interaction and chemical modification, such as S-nitrosylation in the brain.

  • The performance of grass filter strips (GFS) in abating $PO_4$-P concentrations from the forage cropland was tested in an experiment on the 10% slope in Grassland and Forages Division, National Institute of Animal Science, Rural Development Administration (RDA) from October 2007 to September 2009. Forage croplands with rye-corn double cropping system applied with chemical fertilizer and livestock manure (LM) were compared in a natural condition. The plots were hydrologically isolated Main plots consisted of the length of GFS, such as 0m, 5m, 10m and 15m. Sub plots consisted of the type of LM, such as chemical fertilizer (CF), composted cattle manure (CCM) and composted swine manure (CSM). Concentrations of PO4-P in surface runoff water were reduced as the length of GFS increased. Especially, GFS with 10m and 15m reduced $PO_4$-P concentrations significantly compared to that with 0m and 5m (p<0.05). The results from this study suggest that GFS improved the removal and trapping $PO_4$-P from forage croplands.

  • A method is described for the determination of the Po nuclides in a water sample. After the Po nuclides were purified from interfering elements in a water sample using a manganese dioxide precipitation followed by a solvent extraction method, the Po nuclides were deposited onto the silver plate. A large volume of the water sample was effectively pretreated with manganese dioxide precipitation method. To determine the optimum conditions for plating Po, the effects of the pH, volume, temperature and time on the Po deposition were investigated in hydrochloric acid solution. The investigated determination method of Po nuclides with solvent extraction was applied to a tap water sample.

  • Here, some classes of regular order semigroups are discussed. We shall consider that the problems of the existences of (multiplicative) inverse $^{\delta}po$-transversals for such classes of po-semigroups and obtain the following main results: (1) Giving the equivalent conditions of the existence of inverse $^{\delta}po$-transversals for regular order semigroups (2) showing the order orthodox semigroups with biggest inverses have necessarily a weakly multiplicative inverse $^{\delta}po$-transversal. (3) If the Green's relation $\cal{R}$ and $\cal{L}$ are strongly regular (see. sec.1), then any principally ordered regular semigroup (resp. ordered regular semigroup with biggest inverses) has necessarily a multiplicative inverse $^{\delta}po$-transversal. (4) Giving the structure theorem of principally ordered semigroups (resp. ordered regular semigroups with biggest inverses) on which $\cal{R}$ and $\cal{L}$ are strongly regular.

  • The incorporation of cobalt into mesoporous molecular sieves MCM-41 and MCM-48 was carried out. Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 were prepared using Co(II) acetate solution adjusted to pH = 3.0 with phosphoric acid by the incipient wetness method. Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) was used to study the local environments of Co(II) incorporated into mesopores. The band around 500 nm in PAS of as-prepared Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 with Co(II) acetate solution was changed to triplet bands around 600 nm. This could be assigned to the 4 A2(F)-> 4T1(P) transition of Co(II) surrounded tetrahedrally by oxygen ions after calcination. It may be attributable to that the octahedral cobalt species containing phosphate ligands in coordination sphere reacting with framework's silanol groups to be dispersed atomically onto the surface of mesoporous molecular sieves as a tetrahedral species. This is unlike that the Co in Co-Cl/MCM41 and direct-synthesized Co-MCM41 transforms to Co oxide phase upon calcination. Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 were stable while treated with water.
