해수냉난방용 판형 열교환기의 최적설계를 위한 수치적 연구 (Numerical Study for the Optimal Design of Plate Heat Exchanger Using at Seawater Air Conditioning)

  • Plate heat exchanger are being applied in the field of OTEC (ocean thermal energy conversion) and SWAC (seawater air conditioning) system. This study is to analyze numerically the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics by using solid works flow simulation in order to offer optimum design data of plate heat exchanger. Plater heat exchanger proposed in this study is four types. The geometric design parameters of plate heat exchanger are a channel space, a flow orientation, a plate array, the flowrate of working fluid and so on. The main results for numerical analysis of plate heat exchangers are summarized as follows. Heat transfer performance for the channel space of 2.4 mm shows the highest value compared to other spaces. And, the Type 4 plate heat exchanger in Table 2 is the highest performance. From the pressure drop characteristics of plate heat exchanger, the channel space of 3.2 mm shows the lowest value. And Type 1 plate heat exchanger in Table 2 is the lowest pressure drop.

  • In the present study, the characteristics on the internal flow and heat transfer of the dimple-type plate heat exchanger were numerically investigated. For the numerical analysis, the conjugate heat transfer analysis between hot fluid-separating plate-cold fluid was performed using the periodic boundary condition at the center area of the plate and appropriate inlet and outlet conditions for the two streams. The numerical results were validated by the comparison with the experimental data. From these results, the correlations of the Colburn j-factor for the heat transfer and the Fanning f-factor for the flow friction were obtained. The present results could be applicable for the optimal design of dimple-type plate heat exchanger.

  • The experimental study has been conducted on heat transfer characteristics of the plate heat exchangers(PHE) by several researchers. However most of all were focused on a gasket-type plate heat exchanger. Therefore further studies are need for a brazed-type. In the present study, a brazed type plate heat exchanger was tested at a chevron angle of $70^{\circ},\;55^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ with R-22 and R-410A. Condensation temperatures were $24.5^{\circ}C$, and mass flux was ranged from 35 to $60kg/m^2s$. The inlet and exit conditions are in a superheated vapor and subcooled liquid, respectively. The heat transfer coefficient increased with the chevron angle. The heat transfer coefficient of R-22 was lamer than that of R-410A for all chevron angles.

  • In a gas engine based cogeneration system, heat is recovered from two parts, which are jacket water and exhaust gas. The heat from the jacket water is often recovered by a plate type heat exchanger and used for the room heating and/or hot water supply. Depending on the operating conditions of engine and heat recovery system, there should be imbalance in the flow rate and supply pressure between engine and heat recovery side of the heat exchanger. The imbalance cause the deformation of the plate, which affects the pressure drop characteristics. In the present study, the pressure drop inside the heat exchanger has been investigated in a 1/5 scaled test rig and compare with the experimental correlations, which are used for the design.

용접형 판형열교환기의 열전달 및 압력강하특성에 관한 수치해석 (A Numerical Analysis on the Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop Characteristics of Welding Type Plate Heat Exchangers)

  • Numerical analysis was carried out to examine the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of plate heat exchangers for absorption application using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) technique. A commercial CFD software package, FLUENT was used to predict the characteristics of heat transfer, pressure drop and flow distribution within plate heat exchangers. In this paper, a welded plate heat exchanger with the plate of chevron embossing type was numerically analyzed by controlling mass flow rate, solution concentration, and inlet temperatures. The working fluid is $H_2O$/LiBr solution with the LiBr concentration of 50-60% in mass. The numerical simulation shows reasonably good agreement with the experimental results. Also, the numerical results show that plate of the chevron shape gives better results than plate of the elliptical shape from the view points of heat transfer and pressure drop. These results provide a guideline to apply the welded PHE for the solution heat exchanger of absorption systems.

해수 파울링이 판형 열교환기 성능에 미치는 영향에 대한 고찰 (Study on Effects of Seawater Fouling on a Plate-Frame Heat Exchanger)

  • Understanding of seawater fouling characteristics is critical in designing a heat exchanger adapted in an effluent utilization system for a power plant. We reviewed three types of fouling mechanisms of general, biological, and crystallizing for a plate-frame heat exchanger, to be used for heat exchanging with heated effluent from a power plant. Also, mathematical models for each type of seawater fouling were suggested. Actual thermal resistance calculated from seawater fouling models were compared and implemented in designing a plate-frame heat exchanger. The bio-fouling model revealed the largest thermal resistance and the highest number of plates for a plate-frame heat exchanger under the same heat load. Overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of a plate-frame heat exchanger under fouling conditions was lower by 58 percent and higher by 2.85 times than those under clean conditions, respectively.

자동차 공조용 증발기의 고성능화에 관한 연구 (Study on Development of High Performance Evaporator for Automotive Air Conditioner)

  • The object of the present study is to develop a high performance evaporator for automotive air conditioner. The experiment has been conducted on evaporative heat transfer coefficient inside a plate type heat exchanger with a sharp 180-degree turn flow. The test plates have different formed surface, cross-ribbed channel and elliptical-ribbed channel. Also experimental study has been performed to determine optimal design in elliptical-ribbed plate heat exchanger with different turn clearance. In addition to the above experiments, refrigerant behavior and surface temperature distribution in the plate heat exchanger were observed using color thermoviewer(infrared thermometer). In this experiment, working fluid was used R-12 and test conditions were as follows : (1) saturation pressure of $2.116kg/cm^2$, (2) mass fluxes of 40 to $70kg/m^2s$, (3) heat fluxes of 4,500 to $7,300W/m^2$, (4) inlet quality of 0.1 to 0.7. The results indicated that the evaporative heat transfer coefficient of an elliptical-ribbed plate heat exchanger was higher than that of cross-ribbed plate heat exchanger. Also optimal turn clearance in an elliptical-ribbed plate heat exchanger was determined.

Performance of a Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchanger with Spiral Baffle Plates

  • In a conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger, fluid contacts with tubes flowing up and down in a shell, therefore there is a defect in the heat transfer with tubes due to the stagnation portions . Fins are attached to the tubes in order to increase heat transfer efficiency, but there exists a limit. Therefore, it is necessary to improve heat exchanger performance by changing the fluid flow in the shell. In this study, a highly efficient shell-and-tube heat exchanger with spiral baffle plates is simulated three-dimensionally using a commercial thermal-fluid analysis code, CFX4.2. In this type of heat exchanger, fluid contacts with tubes flowing rotationally in the shell. It could improve heat exchanger performance considerably because stagnation portions in the shell could be removed. It is proved that the shell-and-tube heat exchanger with spiral baffle plates is superior to the conventional heat exchanger in terms of heat transfer.

Modifications and Assessment of RELAP5/MOD3.2 for HANARO Thermal-Hydraulic Safety Analyses

  • RELAP5/MOD3.2 was modified to perform the thermal-hydraulic safety analysis for HANARO transients. Several aspects of RELAP5/MOD3.2 were modified or replaced by new features to properly simulate the unique HANARO characteristics such as the finned fuel element, the cooling mechanisms by both plate type heat exchanger and the natural circulation. Especially, the heat transfer packages were modified to be more appropriate for the safety analysis and the heat transfer models were developed for the plate type heat exchanger as well as natural circulation through the pool water. This modified version of RELAP5/MOD3.2 is renamed as RELAP5/HANARO. The thermal-hydraulic simulations of the single fuel pin test and plate type heat exchanger were peformed to assess the realistic predicting capabilities of RELAP5/HANARO and compared with experimental results and manufacturer's data in this paper. In addition, the natural circulation experiment using the scaled bundle was simulated to validate the capability of RELAP5/HANARO. The simulation results show almost similar trend with experimental data. Therefore, it is proved that RELAP5/HANARO has a confidence to use for the safety analyses of HANARO.

고분자 첨가제에 의한 OTEC용 판형 열교환기의 마찰저항감소 효과 연구 (Effect of Polymer Additives on Drag Reduction for a Plate Type Heat Exchanger in OTEC Applications)

  • Experimental investigation has been carried out to determine drag reducing effects of polymer additives for a plate type heat exchanger(evaporator or condenser) in OTEC power plant applications, where the pressure drop in the heat exchangers takes up $70{\sim}80%$ of the total pumping power in the existing system. The rate of drag reduction was investigated with various polymer concentrations and mass flow rates. Experiments were undertaken for a test section in Alfa-Laval plate heat exchanger utilizing Poly Ethylene Oxide(Mw $5{\times}10^6$) as polymer additives. Concentrations of polymer additives were 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, 200, 400 wppm at $25^{\circ}C$ and mass flow rates were 0.6kg/s, 0.7kg/s, 0.8kg/s and 0.9kg/s in normal operating ranges for a 15kW Alfa-Laval plate heat exchanger. The maximum effects of drag reductions were found at approximately 0.7kg/s of mass flow rate. The results show that there exists the optimum mass flow rate for the plate heat exchanger to obtain maximum drag reductions. Drag reduction of 20% means considerable savings in pumping power for a large size of OTEC plant.
