  • In this paper, polymer composites based sandwich structures like beams and plates are optimised by using parametric study. The structures are composed of fibre reinforced composites for facial material and resin concrete and PVC foam for core materials. The stacking sequences and thickness of the composites are controlled as major parameters to find out the optimal condition for machine tool components. For the plate structure of machine tool bed composites-skined sandwich structure which has several ribs are proposed to enhance bending stiffnesses in two major directions at the same time. Dynamic robustness of a machine tool structure is investigated using modal analysis. From the results optimal configuration and materials for high precesion machine tools are proposed. And the plate was made of fiber reforced composite material and PVC foam.

  • Various types of coastal structures have been constructed to prevent coastal disasters. Among these coastal structures, submerged breakwaters have been used more widely than all of the other coastal structures because of their excellent advantages in scenery effects, construction efficiency, and environmental benefits. This study investigated the potential of the horizontal plate submerged breakwater model. Usually, it is necessary for a submerged breakwater to minimize and compensate for the negative impacts on the marine environment and ecosystem caused by the marine construction. Thus, the prevention of coastal disasters was verified for this submerged breakwater model, regardless of its function as a fish reef. The purpose of this study was to investigate the hydraulic characteristics with changes in the crest width and porosity of a horizontal plate submerged breakwater and compare the results of this study with the results of other studies on permeable and impermeable submerged breakwaters.

  • The fiber reinforced laminated composite structures are very susceptible to be damaged when they are impacted by foreign objects. To increase the impact resistance of the laminated composite structures, shape memory alloy(SMA) thin film is embedded in the structure. For the numerical impact analysis of SMA hybrid composite structures, SMA modeling tool is developed to consider pseudoelastic effect of SMAs. Moreover, the damage analysis is considered using failure criteria and a simple damage model for reasonable impact analysis. The numerical results are verified with the experimental ones. Impact analyses for composite plate with pre-strained SMAs are numerically performed and the damage areas are investigated.

  • In this paper, an integrated damage identification system (IDIS) is proposed to locate and size damage in real structures. The application of the IDIS to real structures includes the measurement of modal responses, the construction of damage-detection models, and the implementation of measurements and models into the damage-detection process. Firstly, the theory of the damage identification method is outlined. Secondly, the schematic and each component of the IDIS are described. Finally, the practicality of the IDIS is verified from experiments on two different bridge-models, a model plate-grider and a model truss.

  • The author has evaluated the panoramic image clarity of the midfacial anatomic structures in dry skull according to the skull position. The radiopaque markers were attached to the anatomic structures: infraorbial rim, upper and lower borders of zygomatic arch, pterygomaxillary fissure, lateral pterygoid plate, pyriform aperture of nasal cavity, lateral wall of maxilla, orbital floor, infraorbital foramen, and nasal floor. Position of the skull were divided into four groups. standard, 25mm forward, chin-down, chin-up position. The results were as follows: 1. The pyriform aperture of nasal cavity, lateral wall of the maxilla, orbital floor, infraorbital foramen and nasal floor did net cast any discernible image. 2. Nearly all images of midfacial structures were blurred in the chin-up position. 3. The forward position provided good visualization of the maxillary sinus. 4. The chin-down position provided good visualization of the zygomatic arch, pterygomaxillary fissue, and lateral pterygoid plate.

  • The attenuation of waves transmitted through non-conservative joints that are shown in many practical structures, is affected by the impedance and the orientation of the joint. In this paper, the joints between plate structures are assumed to be modeled as linear spring-dashpot systems and the transmission and reflection of vibration energy in the medium to high frequency ranges are investigated. • For the analysis of vibrational energy density and intensity of partitioned complex system structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges, A software based on the Power Flow Analysis(PFA) has been developed for the plate elements. The flexural, longitudinal and shear waves in plates are formulated and the joint element equations for multi-coupled plates are fully developed. Also, the wave transmission approach has been introduced to cover the energy transmission and reflection at the joint plate elements. To confirm the validity of the developed PFA software, the submarine-shaped complex structures are used for the analysis of vibration intensity and energy density.

  • The analysis of structures may be classified into three categories: theoretical, numerical, and experimental approaches. The numerical and experimental methods are very useful when the structures to be analyzed have complicated shapes or geometry because theoretical methods are restricted to simple and special cases. However, the theoretical methods are very important analysis in the viewpoint that they can give basic insight for the structural behavior. Among them the modal model method is widely used because of the powerful propertiy of eigenfunctions(mode shapes), or orthogonality. In this paper, the modal model method was reviewed and studied for various models for structures: string, beam, membrane, and plate. Governing equations and solution methods were compared and a structural-acoustic coupling system was used for an application.

  • The thin-plate structure and the box-beam structure are two typical welded structures in railway vehicles. Because of their structure complexity, bigger size and multi-seams, welding residual distortion which occur in welding process bring unfavorable effect on the quality of welding products manufacturing and service. As a result, welding distortion forecasting and control become an important and urgent research topic in railway vehicles. In this paper, three different numerical methods are presented corresponding to three typical types of welded structures of railway vehicles and welding deformation are simulated. Consistence of numerical results and experimental data proves the correctness of models and feasibility of simulation methods.

  • The purpose of the present work is to study the parametric nonlinear vibration behavior of three layered symmetric laminated plate. In the analytical formulation; both normal and shear deformations are considered in the core layer by means of the refined higher-order zig-zag theory. Harmonic balance method in conjunction with Galerkin procedure is adopted for simply supported laminate plate, to obtain its natural and damping properties. For these aims, a set of complex amplitude equations governed by complex parameters are written accounting for the geometric nonlinearity and viscoelastic damping factor. The frequency response curves are presented and discussed by varying the material and geometric properties of the core layer.
