  • This study presents a governing equations of bending behavior of anisotropic sandwich plates with multi-layered laminated composite faces. Based on zig-zag models for through thickness deformations, the shear deformation of composite faces is included. All edges of plate are assumed to be simply supported. Results of the bending analysis under lateral loads are presented for the influence of various lay up sequences of antisymmetric angle-ply laminated faces. The accuracy of the approach is ascertained by comparing solutions from the sandwich plates theory with composite faces to the laminated plates theory. Since the present analysis considers the bending stiffness of the core and also the transverse shear deformations of the laminated faces, the proposed method showed higher than that calculated according to the general laminated plates theory. The information presented might be useful to design sandwich plates structure with polymer matrix composite faces.

  • In this study, we prepared ITO thin film on the polycarbonate(PC) substrate by using Facing Targets sputtering (FTS) system. After the external bending force was applied to as-deposited ITO thin films with fixed face-plate distance (L), we investigated how properties of those change. As a result, the crack density of films was increasing as bending frequency increased. In accordance with crack distribution, we observed that the resistivity value of ITO thin film increased.

  • In this study, we developed an analysis method of plate forming by induction heating, verifying the effectiveness of the present method through a series of experiments. The phenomena of the induction heating involves a 3D transient problem, coupled with electromagnetic, heat transfer, and elastoplastic large deformation analyses. To solve the problem, or present an appropriate model and an integrated system. Using the present analysis model, or can estimate the plate deformation in heating without experiments and simulate the plate bending process of induction heating.

  • This paper presents a newly suggested calculation method in which an arbitrary quadrilateral element with curved sides is transformed to a normal rectangular one by mapping of coordinates, then the two-dimensional spline is adopted to approach the displacement function of this element. Finally the solution can be obtained by the least-energy principle. Thereby, the application field of Spline Finite Element Method will be extended.

  • The failure modes of steel column-base plate connection arranged on the basis of AISC Design Guide-#1 and -#10 are base plate tension and compression side flexural yielding, yielding, pull-out and shear failure of anchor rod, concrete crushing in concrete footing and steel column yielding. The bending moment capacity and failure mode in this connection are predicted using limit-state function and we compare these results and test result. In the case that thickness of base plate is relatively thick, bending moment capacity and failure mode in steel column-base plate connection accurately predicted. But in the case that thickness of base plate is relatively thin and axial force do not exist, prediction of failure mode in this connection is somewhat inaccurate.

  • An efficient shear deformation theory is developed for wave propagation analysis of an infinite functionally graded plate in the presence of thermal environments. By dividing the transverse displacement into bending and shear parts, the number of unknowns and governing equations of the present theory is reduced, and hence, makes it simple to use. The thermal effects and temperature-dependent material properties are both taken into account. The temperature field is assumed to be a uniform distribution over the plate surface and varied in the thickness direction only. Material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent, and graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The governing equations of the wave propagation in the functionally graded plate are derived by employing the Hamilton's principle and the physical neutral surface concept. There is no stretching.bending coupling effect in the neutral surface-based formulation, and consequently, the governing equations and boundary conditions of functionally graded plates based on neutral surface have the simple forms as those of isotropic plates. The analytic dispersion relation of the functionally graded plate is obtained by solving an eigenvalue problem. The effects of the volume fraction distributions and temperature on wave propagation of functionally graded plate are discussed in detail. It can be concluded that the present theory is not only accurate but also simple in predicting the wave propagation characteristics in the functionally graded plate. The results carried out can be used in the ultrasonic inspection techniques and structural health monitoring.

  • If a design load exceeding the frictional force of the contact surface is applied to the connection of steel members using a high-tension bolt friction joint, sliding occurs and the connection of the steel members bears the design load through the shear strength and bearing strength of the bolt and the base plate. The sliding distance can be determined by the tensile force of the bolt, the friction coefficient of the contact surface, and the position of the bolt in the base plate hole. This study measured and analyzed sliding according to standard bolt hole and oversize bolt hole when pure bending moment and tensile force were applied to high-tension bolt joints with different sizes of bolt holes made in the base plate and the cover plate. In a high-tension bolt joint receiving pure bending moment and tensile force, the load causing sliding in an oversize bolt hole was $74\sim94%$ of that in a standard bolt hole. In a member receiving tensile force, the sliding load ratio was lower when the size of oversize bolt holes in the base plate and the cover plate was large. In addition, the size of the oversize bolt hole in the base plate was more closely correlated with the change of sliding loadthan the size of the oversize bolt hole in the base plate.

  • An efficient finite element method has been introduced for analysis of metallic sandwich plates subject to bending moment. A full model 3-point bending FE-analysis shows that the plastic behavior of inner structures appears only at the load point. The unit structures of sandwich plates are defined to numerically calculate the bending stiffness and strength utilizing the recurrent boundary condition for pure bending analysis. The equivalent models with the same bending stiffness and strength of full models are then designed analytically. It is demonstrated that the results of both models are almost the same and the FE-analysis method incorporating the equivalent models can reduce the computation time effectively. The dominant collapse modes are face buckling and face yielding. Since the inner dimpled structures prevent face buckling, sandwich plates with inner dimpled shell structure can absorb more energy than other types of sandwich plates during the bending behavior.

  • ITO thin film was deposited on PC substrate in Facing Targets Sputtering (FTS) system with various sputtering conditions. After it is applied to external bending force, we investigated how change the surface and electrical property of as-deposited ITO thin film. As the L(face-plate distance) of substrate decreases, it found that the maximum crack density is increasing at the center position and decreasing crack density as goes to the edge. So to apply same curvature (r) and bending force to PC substrate with ITO thin film, we fixed the L that is equal to curvature radius (2r). Before bending test, ITO thin films that deposited in the input current of 0.4 A and thickness of 200 nm already had biaxial tensile failure because of each different CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) and Others had been shown no bending or crack. After bending test, all samples had been shown cracks at about 200 times and as increasing the crack density, resistivity increased.

  • The goal of this study is to evaluate the limitation of ASTM D 198 bending and ASTM D 3044 in determination of elastic modulus and shear modulus. Different material properties and span to depth ratios were used to analyze the effects of material property and testing conditions. The ratio of true elastic modulus to apparent elastic modulus evaluated from ASTM D 198 bending sharply decreased with increment of span to depth ratio. Shear modulus evaluated from ASTM D 198 bending decreased with increment of depth, whereas shear modulus evaluated from ASTM D 3044 was hardly influenced by increment of depth. Poisson's ratio influenced shear modulus from ASTM D 198 bending but did not influence shear modulus from ASTM D 3044. Different shearing factor was obtained for different depths of beams to correct shear modulus obtained from ASTM D 198 bending equivalent to shear modulus from theory of elasticity. Equivalent shear modulus of materials could be obtained by applying different shearing factors associated with beam depth for ASTM D 198 bending and correction factor for ASTM D 3044.
