  • Since MFC(macro-fiber composite) transducer has been developed, many researchers have tried to apply this transducer on SHM(structural health monitoring), because it is so flexible and durable that it can be easily embedded to various kinds of structures. The objective of this paper is to figure out the benefits and feasibility of applying MFC transducers to guided wave technique. For this, we have experimentally tested the performance of MFC patches as transmitter and sensors for excitation and reception of guided waves on the thin aluminum alloy plate. In order to enhance the signal accuracy, we applied the FIR filter for noise reduction as well as used STFT(short-time Fourier transform) algorithm to image the guided wave characteristics clearly. From the results, the guided wave generated based on MFC showed good agreement with its theoretical dispersion curves. Moreover, the ultrasonic Lamb wave techniques based on MFC patches in pitch-catch manner was tested for detection of surface notch defects of which depths are 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of the aluminum plate thickness. Results showed that the notch was detectable well when the notch depth was 10% of the thickness or greater.

  • In this paper a damage imaging technique using pre-stack migration is developed using Lamb (guided) wave propagation in composite structures for imaging multi damages by both numerical simulations and experimental studies. In particular, the paper focuses on the experimental study using a finite number of sensors for future practical applications. A composite laminate with a surface-mounted linear piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) disk array is illustrated as an example. Two types of damages, one straight-crack damage and two simulated circular-shaped delamination damage, have been studied. First, Mindlin plate theory is used to model Lamb waves propagating in laminates. The group velocities of flexural waves in the composite laminate are also derived from dispersion relations and validated by experiments. Then the pre-stack migration technique is performed by using a two-dimensional explicit finite difference algorithm to back-propagate the scattered energy to the damages and damages are imaged together with the excitation-time imaging conditions. Stacking these images together deduces the resulting image of damages. Both simulations and experimental results show that the pre-stack migration method is a promising method for damage identification in composite structures.

  • Total magnetic field and high-resolution bathymetric data were collected over nine seamounts to the northwest of the Marshall Islands in the western Pacific. Magnetic parameters including inclination and declination were calculated from the magnetic anomalies using inversion algorithm of Plouff (1976), and a corresponding paleomagnetic pole was determined with the magnetic parameters. The paleomagnetic poles determined in this study were compared with the previous apparent polar wander path (APWP) of Pacific plate. Most seamounts of the study area have normal polarity. The study reveals that all nine seamounts in the study area formed in the southern hemisphere during the Cretaceous based on their comparison with the APWP of Pacific plate. The ages estimated from paleomagnetic poles can be divided by age into three groups: the oldest (OSM1 and OSM3), middle age (OSM2, OSM4, and 6-2), and the youngest (OSM5-1, 5-2, 5-3, and 6-1). The fermer two groups and the latter seem to be coincident with two distinct pulses of Cretaceous volcanic activity (115-90 Ma and 83-65 Ma). As a whole the seamounts at southwest of the study area are older than at those northeast.

  • While designing and operating machines, it is very important to understand the dynamic characteristic of the machines. Authors developed the Sylvester-transfer stiffness coefficient method in order to analyze effectively the free vibration of machines or structures. The Sylvester-transfer stiffness coefficient method was derived from the combination of the Sylvester's inertia theorem and the transfer stiffness coefficient method. In this paper, the authors formulate the computational algorithm for flexural free vibration analysis of axisymmetric annular plate using the Sylvester-transfer stiffness coefficient method. To confirm the usefulness of the Sylvester-transfer stiffness coefficient method, the natural frequencies and modes for two computational models computed using the Sylvester-transfer stiffness coefficient method are compared with those computed using the exact solution and the finite element method.

  • The objective of this study is to model and simulate the nonlinear lubrication performance of the sliding part between the piston and cylinder wall in a hydrostatic swash-plate-type axial piston pump. A numerical algorithm is developed that facilitates simultaneous calculation of the rotating body motion and fluid film pressure to observe the fluid film geometry and power loss. It is assumed that solid asperity contact, so-called mixed lubrication in this study, invariably occurs in the swash-plate-type axial piston pump, which produces a higher lateral moment on the pistons than other types of hydrostatic machines. Two comparative mixed lubrication models, rigid and elastic, are used to determine the reaction force and sliding friction. The rigid model does not allow any elastic deformation in the partial lubrication area. The patch shapes, reactive forces, and virtual local elastic deformation in the partial lubrication area are obtained in the elastic contact model using a simple Hertz contact theory. The calculation results show that a higher reaction force and friction loss are obtained in the rigid model, indicating that solid deformation is a significant factor on the lubrication characteristics of the reciprocating piston part.

  • Thipaper presents a methodology to suppress the vibration of thin rectangular plate clamped all edges using piezo-ceramic material as actuators and sensors. Dynamic characteristics of the structure bonded with distributed actuators/sensors are identified by the Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) frequency domain modeling technique based on the experimental data. Hybrid control scheme is adopted and feedback controller is designed by LQG(Linear Quadratic Gaussian). Feedforward controller is adapted by multiple filtered -$x$ LMS(least mean square) algorithm. Experiment result demonstrates the effective reduction of the vibration label for both the transient and persistent external disturbances.

  • Regarding the plate bending process by line heating method, in this study a simplified numerical analysis is performed for a beam model to predict its residual deformation and stress distribution. Using the modified strip theory and beam finite element method, a PC-based simulation program is developed for a thermo-elastic-plastic beam. The plate bending problem can be approximately replaced by a beam model using distributed springs to account for the effect of adjacent strips. The spring constants are chosen as the best fit with experiments. In this paper, it is assumed that the temperature distribution is already given and the temperature-dependent material properties are considered. To verify the simulation program, the results using present numerical algorithm are compared with other published experimental results and similar numerical studies. The comparison shows good agreement. The present PC-based computer program also shows good efficiency in computing time.

  • Recently large size color TV and computer monitor are very popular and a lot techniques are being developed to get a high quality picture on the screen through reducing the convergence error among the red, green and blue beams and achieving a high focusing. One of the techniques is considering the mutual effects of the components of the Brown tube. The magnetic deflection yoke, especially, stands immediately next to the electron gun and generates the leakage magnetic fields at the electron gun which affects the trajectories of the electron beams inside the gun. Hence a shield cup made of thin conducting plate is located at the end of electron gun in order to shield the leakage flux from the deflection yoke. Since the red, green and blue beams are placed unsymmetrically the shielding effects of the shield cup on the beams are not same and eddy current controller, made of thin conducting plate, is auxiliary placed inside the shield cup. In this paper a transient magnetic field analysis algorithm is developed using boundary element method, and applied to the analysis of the shielding effects of the eddy current controller of shield cup in an electron gun.

  • A Thomson coil type actuator is applied as the driving unit in an arc eliminator system. To eliminate the arc efficiently, the speed of the actuator is required as fast as possible with certain limit of the exciting current. Therefore, the dynamic characteristics of the Thomson coil type actuator should be analyzed in an effective way. In this paper, a novel solving technique has been developed based on the equivalent circuit model which is set up by dividing the conducting plate into multi segments. To guarantee the calculation accuracy and improve the calculation efficiency, an adaptive refinement algorithm is suggested based on the field continues condition. The proposed method has been verified by the FEM calculation and experiment. The influence of circuit and plate parameters to the performance of the actuator is also investigated, from which a reasonable set of parameters can be found.
