In this work, we have employed the strain gradient plasticity theory to investigate the effect of material size on the deformation behavior in metal forming process. Flow stress is expressed in terms of strain, strain gradient (spatial derivative of strain) and intrinsic material length. The least square method coupled with strain gradient plasticity was used to calculate the components of strain gradient at each element of material. For demonstrating the size effect, the proposed approach has been applied to plane compression process and micro rolling process. Results show when the characteristic length of the material comes to the intrinsic material length, the effect of strain gradient is noteworthy. For the microcompression, the additional work hardening at higher strain gradient regions results in uniform distribution of strain. In the case of micro-rolling, the strain gradient is remarkable at the exit section where the actual reduction of the rolling finishes and subsequently strong work hardening take places at the section. This results in a considerable increase in rolling force. Rolling force with the strain gradient plasticity considered in analysis increases by 20% compared to that with conventional plasticity theory.
The contour method relies on deformations that occur when a residually stressed component is cut along a plane. The method is based on the elastic superposition principle. When plasticity is involved in the relaxation process, stress error in the resulting measurement of residual stress would be caused. During the cutting the specimen is constrained at a location along the cut so that deformations are restrained as much as possible during cutting. With proper selection of the constraining location the plasticity effect can also be minimized. Typical patterns of longitudinal welding residual stress state were taken to assess the plasticity effect along with constraining locations.
Purpose: The purpose of this study were to overview the effect of exercise on neural plasticity and the proteins related to neural plasticity. Results: Exercise increased levels of BDNF(brain-derived neurotrophic factor), Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), Synapsin, Synaptophysin, VEGF(vascular endothelial growth factor) and other growth factors, stimulate neurogenesis, increase resistance to brain insult and improve learning and mental performance. These proteins improved synaptic plasticity by directly affecting synaptic structure and potentiating synaptic strength, and by strengthening the underlying systems that support plasticity including neurogenesis, metabolism and vascular function. Conclusion: Exercise-induced structural and functional change by these proteins can effect on functional movement, cognition in healthy and brain injured people and animals.
This paper presents a method of elastic-plastic analysis for planar steel frames that provides the accuracy of distributed plasticity methods with the computational efficiency that is greater than that of distributed plasticity methods but less than that of plastic-hinge based methods. This method accounts for the effect of spread of plasticity accurately without discretization through the cross-section of a beam-column element, which is achieved by the following procedures. First, nonlinear equations describing the relationships between generalized stresses and strains of the cross-section are derived analytically. Next, nonlinear force-deformation relationships for the beam-column element are obtained through lengthwise integration of the generalized strains. Elastic-plastic flexibility coefficients are then calculated by differentiating the above element force-deformation relationships. Finally, an elastic-plastic stiffness matrix is obtained by making use of the flexibility-stiffness transformation. Adding the conventional geometric stiffness matrix to the elastic-plastic stiffness matrix results in the tangent stiffness matrix, which can readily be used to evaluate the load carrying capacity of steel frames following standard nonlinear analysis procedures. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by several examples that are sensitive to the effect of spread of plasticity.
A plasticity theory applicable to powdered metal compaction is briefly summarized and its variational form for the finite element analysis is described. The compaction processes of axisymmetric solid cylinder are simulated. For the analysis of the friction effect of solid cylinder, the investigations were performed for different compact geometries. Highlights of the results for given geometries are reported in terms of transmitted pressure on the lower punch from the upper punch through the compact and maximum density variation within the compacts. General conclusions from these simulation results are : (1) the friction coefficient could be selected from the transmitted force data during the single acting compaction test with the simulated results ; and (2) density variatioins within the compacts are very much dependent of the compact geometry such as the height to diameter ratio and the frictional condition between compact and dies.
It is known that the mim forming processes show somewhat different phenomena compared with the conventional metal forming processes, namely, the size effect, enhanced friction effect and etc. Such typical phenomena, however, are not predicted by the conventional finite element analysis, which has been an efficient numerical tool to predict the metal forming processes. It is due to the fact that the constitutive relations used does not describe the microstructural characteristics of the materials. In the present investigation, the finite element formulation using the rate-dependent rigid plastic crystal plasticity model of the face-centered cubic materials is conducted to predict the micro mechanical behaviors during the mim forming processes. The finite element analysis, however, provides mesh-dependent solutions for the intragranular deformations. Therefore, the couple stress energy is additionally introduced into the variational principle and formulated within the framework of the rigid plastic finite element method to obtain mesh-independent solutions. Micro deformations of single crystal and bicrystal with various orientations are calculated to show the potential of the developed formulation.
Recent experiments have shown the 'size effects' in micro/nano scale. But the classical plasticity theories can not predict these size dependent deformation behaviors because their constitutive models have no characteristic material length scale. The Mechanism - based Strain Gradient(MSG) plasticity is proposed to analyze the non-uniform deformation behavior in micro/nano scale. The MSG plasticity is a multi-scale analysis connecting macro-scale deformation of the Statistically Stored Dislocation(SSD) and Geometrically Necessary Dislocation(GND) to the meso-scale deformation using the strain gradient. In this research we present a study of nano-indentation by the MSG plasticity. Using W. D. Nix and H. Gao s model, the analytic solution(including depth dependence of hardness) is obtained for the nano indentation , and furthermore it validated by the experiments.
In this paper a body-centered cubic(BCC) crystal plasticity model based on microscopic dislocation mechanism is introduced and numerically implemented. The model is coupled with irradiation effect via tracking dislocation loop evolution on each slip system. On the basis of the model, uniaxial tensile tests of unirradiated and irradiated RPV steel(take Chinese A508-3 as an example) at different temperatures are simulated, and the simulation results agree well with the experimental results. Furthermore, crystal plasticity damage is introduced into the model. Then the damage behavior before and after irradiation is studied using the model. The results indicate that the model is an effective tool to study the effect of irradiation and temperature on the mechanical properties and damage behavior.
An elastic-plasticity model during the austenitic decomposition was derived and implemented to incorporate the two important deformation behaviors observed during the phase transformations: the volumetric strain and transformation induced plasticity due to the temperature change and phase transformation. To obtain transformed phase volume fractions during cooling, the fourth order Runge-Kutta method was used to solve the Kirkaldy's phase kinetics model which is function of temperature, austenitic grain size and chemical composition. The volumetric strain was calculated by considering the densities of constituent phases, while the transformation induced plasticity was based on the micro-plasticity due to the volume mismatch between soft austenitic phase and other harder phases. The constitutive equations were implemented into the implicit finite element software and a simple boundary value problem was chosen as a model problem to validate the effect of transformation plasticity on the deformation behavior of steel under cooling from high temperature. It was preliminary concluded that the transformation plasticity plays a critical role in relaxing the developed stress during forming and thus reducing the magnitude of springback.
