  • Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the morphological characteristics and growth rates of 101 medium-leaf type zoysiagrasses (Zoysia spp.) collected at the major sod production area (Jang Seong Gun) in South Korea. Collected lines with distinctive morphology and visual growth rate were planted in plastic pots and measured morphological characteristics under the plastic house conditions. Variation of leaf width, plant height, leaf angle, length of leaf sheath, trichome, stolon length, and color were measured. Six lines were selected by evaluating growth rates from one hundred one collected lines. Eight standard cultivars and three other superior lines previously collected were compared to 7 selected lines form Jang seong area by checking growth rates and morphological characteristics. Average leaf blade width was 3.4 mm, leaf angle was 45.8 degree, plant height was 21.6 cm, height of lowest leaf was 5.0 cm, and length of leaf blade was 14.1 cm. Ground cover rates of selected lines 'CY6097' and 'CY6069' were 70% and 68.3%, respectively. These are believed to be faster than 60% ground cover rate of zoysiagrass 'Anyang', and also, twice as faster than the 31.7% ground cover rate of Z. matrella. Selected line 'CY6069' showed fast growth rate with shorter internode length (5.1 cm) compared to zoysiagrass 'Anyang'. Based on the results of this study, we could select useful fast growing zoysiagrass breeding lines from the major sod production area (Jang Seong Gun) in Korea.

  • The developmental time of the nymphs of Myzus persicae was studied in the laboratory (six constant temperatures from 15 to $30^{\circ}C$ with 50~60% RH, and a photoperiod of 14L:10D) and in a green-pepper plastic house. Mortality of M. persicae in laboratory was high in the first(6.7~13.3%) and second instar nymphs(6.7%) at low temperatures and high in the third (17.8%) and fourth instar nymphs(17.8%) at high temperatures. Mortality was 66.7% at $33^{\circ}C$ in laboratory and $26.7^{\circ}C$ in plastic house. The total developmental time was the longest at $14.6^{\circ}C$ (14.4 days) and shortest at $26.7^{\circ}C$ (6.0 days) in plastic house. The lower threshold temperature of the total nymphal stage was $3.0^{\circ}C$ in laboratory. The thermal constant required for nymphal stage was 111.1DD. The relationship between developmental rate and temperature was fitted nonlinear model by Logan-6 which has the lowest value on Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC). The distribution of completion of each developmental stage was well described by the 3-parameter Weibull function ($r^2=0.95{\sim}0.97$). This model accurately described the predicted and observed occurrences. Thus the model is considered to be good for use in predicting the optimal spray time for Myzus persicae.

  • This study was carried out to develop new hybrid zoysiagrass cultivar 'Seah' (The application no. for cultivar protection : 2014-22). Native zoysiagrasses were collected from south-west seaside of Korea from 2010 to 2011. Artificial crossing was conducted to develop F1 hybrid between Z2011 (Z. sinica) and NM1 (Z. matrella) at plastic house in 2011. Among the progenies, 'Seah' showed fine leaf texture and high shoot density from the space planting plots at field. 'Seah' showed genetically light green color, with fine leaf with 1.8mm and height to the lowest leaf blade was 1.94 cm. Ground coverage rate was slower than medium leaf zoysiagrass (Jung-gi), but plant height of 7.1 cm was the lowest among the compared zoysiagrasses and height to lowest leaf of 1.94 cm was lower than most zoysiagrass, which may allow low mowing height.

  • The effect of wallastonite, potassium chloride and potassium sulphate on the ammonification and nitrification of urea was studied in a non-planted green house experiment, filling with 500g soil in plastic pot and incubating for 17 days. Potassium sulphate gave superior effect on the neutralizing soil acidity of wallastonite than potassium chloride and raised soil pH which promoted ammonification and subsequent nitrification of urea. Less than 20% $NO_3-N$ against the sum of $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ was accumulated in soils incubated bellow pH 6.0. It seemed that pH 5.2 to 6.0 was the critical range for the nitrification of ammonium, or raising the concentration of ammonia in soils to the toxic level to the nitrification. It appeared that the nitrification could be occuring in low moisture, air dried, conditions of soil.

  • BACKGROUND: The mean annual temperature of the Korean Peninsula will continue to rise due to global warming. 'Shiranuhi' mandarin-a late-harvest cultivar-is primarily cultivated in plastic greenhouses where high temperatures cannot be directly avoided. Therefore, growth and fruit quality changes under elevated temperatures must be investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS: Elevated temperatures were divided into three groups [2℃ (T-I), 4℃ (T-II), and 6℃ (T-III) above the ambient temperature] during the 2019-2020 season. Mean temperatures were 17.1℃, 18.6℃, and 20.2℃ in T-I, T-II, and T-III, respectively. The bud bursts in T-II and T-III were earlier than that in T-I at 7 days and 11 days, respectibely. And the full blooms in T-II and T-III were earlier than that in T-I at 11 days and 23 days, respectively. Fruit size significantly increased with increased temperature. The citrus color index in the coloring phase markedly differed across treatments. Further, total soluble solid and acid contents markedly changed with temperature rise but the sugar-to-acid ratio did not. Sucrose content tended to decrease with increase in temperature, but citric acid content remained unaffected. CONCLUSION(S): Elevated temperature accelerated plant growth and development but delayed rind color development in 'Shiranuhi' mandarin. Therefore, rise in ambient temperature by >4.6℃ may negatively affect yield and fruit quality.

  • The study was performed to investigate the effect of incorporation of green manures (GM) into a sandy loam soil for organic vegetable production in the condition of plastic film house, relating to growth and yield of tomato crop. Three species of GM as perennial ryegrass, sudangrass and soybean are cultivated during the rest time of summer season and incorporated into soil just after the harvest. Thereafter tomato crop was transplanted as the following crop to soil incorporated GM. Among GM, soybean was proper as GM crop for organic farming, due to the effect of yield increase by continuous supply of nitrogen on following the tomato crop. Yield of tomato crop after soybean incorporation into soil was $4.2Mg\;ha^{-1}$ similar to $4.4Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of N-P-K standard fertilization (conventional) treatment. But perennial ryegrass and sudangrass were improper, because the biomass yield of perennial ryegrass was very low due to growth retardation by high temperature during summer season and soil incorporation of sudangrass as GM results in yield decrease of following the tomato crop caused by high C/N ratio of sudangrass itself. In conclusioa soybean incorporation into soil had advantage of producing conventional level on following the tomato yield and therefore it could recommend as GM for organic vegetable production.

  • Organic farming in Korea has mainly focused on producing vegetables in plastic film house and cereals in paddy field. For high productivity of vegetables and cereals, most Korean farmers have not applied crop rotation in the cropping system. Thus, this study was carried out to evaluate the effects of crop rotation on the yield of red pepper and green onion, the changes in soil fertility and the potential as green manure of rye and hairy vetch. Rye and hairy vetch were cultivated for winter season every year, and directly incorporated into the soil. The yield of red pepper fruits in organic farming using crop rotation (OFCR) decreased 23 to 36% compared with conventional farming system (CFS). Whereas, green onion showed the increased yield of about 13%. In OFCR, total carbon content of soil was higher, however available phosphate content lower than conventional farming. As a result of measuring the bulk density of soil, OFCR and CFS were 1.26 to $1.35Mg/m^3$ and 1.37 to $1.42Mg/m^3$, respectively. Carbon and nitrogen contents of microbial biomass in OFCR were obviously higher compared with the CFS. In the plot cultivated rye for winter season, the weed germination was strongly reduced (about 52 %). Balance of macro nutrient elements, nitrogen and phosphate, in the application of rye and hairy vetch had a minus value. For potassium, the output value was higher than the input one, therefore organic farming under red pepper-rye or hairy vetch systems requires applying additional potassium input. Also, we selected two hairy vetch varieties of cv. Hungvillosa and Ostsaat which can be adapt at Korea climate. In order to estimate a yield of green manures, the weight of shoot and root was measured. The ratio of shoot and root between rye and hairy vetch showed 0.88 and 1.91, respectively. The potential levels of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium which could be supplied from rye were 7.7, 7.8 and 21.9 kg/10a and from hairy vetch were 17.0, 8.6 and 22.9 kg/10a, respectively. So we recommend that cultivating hairy vetch, as a nutrient supplier, and rye, as an amendment to enhance the soil physical property, for winter season be practical method in Korea organic farming system.

  • This study was conducted to determine the ideal beginning date of plastic house optimum heating for off-season (December) production of asparagus. To achieve this, the 1.6-year-old 'Green tower' asparagus was cultivated in Jeju area ($33^{\circ}$28.110N, $126^{\circ}$31.076E) and the yield and quality among 7 different beginning dates of heating from Oct. 25 to Jan. 20 with 15-days interval were compared. The heating was controlled to maintain the inside temperature was higher than $20^{\circ}C$, But the plastic house was ventilated when the inside temperature rose to $30^{\circ}C$. Days to sprouting took longer as heating dates were delayed. Days to sprouting took 52 days in heating at December 30, and the days were shortened thereafter. As the beginning of heating was delayed, sprouting of asparagus was retarded. Among treatments, days to sprouting was 52 days and longest when the heating began on December 30. When the heating began on October 25, harvest was earliest and started on 7 November. When the heating began on November 15 and 30, harvest started on November 30 and December 18, respectively. Harvesting started on November 7 for October 25 heating, November 30 for Nov. 15 heating, and December 18 for November 30 heating, respectively. When the heating began was done after December. 15, harvesting was possible after early January. The number of spear, spear weight and yield were highly increased in the treatments of heating after January. 10 when the asparagus dormancy was broken. In the case of heating dates were before the asparagus dormancy breaking, the total yield was highest in November 15 heating with 607 kg/10a. The marketable yield of November 15 heating was 386kg/10a, which was twice higher than the 193 kg/10a of October 25 heating. Accordingly, it is recommended to start heating on November 15 for the production of off-season (December) asparagus in Jeju. Therefore, the optimum heating date to start was November 15 for the improvement of quality and yield of off-season (December) asparagus in Jeju area.

  • In 2000, domestic protected cultivation area was about 52,189 ha including 13,621 ha of heating greenhouses. Recently, heating cost accounts for 25 to 30% of total production cost which has been increased due to the rise of oil price, while the heating cost was about 15% in other advanced countries. To reduce the heating energy cost, the study of minimizing the heating space of greenhouse have been conducted from 1998 to 1999. The system was developed to control the heating space according to crop growth by moving horizontal curtain up and down. Installation of the heating space-control curtain in greenhouse decreased heating capacity to 264 m$^3$compared to 661.5 m$^3$in the traditional curtain, and consumpted fuel was saved about 56% point in semiforcing culture and 28% point in retarding culture of pepper. In addition, uniform distribution of air temperature and relative humidity in greenhouse environment resulted in earlier flowering and higher yields in hot pepper.

  • Remote sensing technique in agriculture can be used to identify chlorophyll content, biomass, and yield caused from N stress level. This study was conducted to evaluate biomass, N stress levels, and yield of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) under sand culture in a plastic film house using ground-based remote sensors. Nitrogen rates applied were 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, and 140 percent of N concentration in the Hoagland's nutrient solution. Sensor readings for reflectance indices were taken at 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 60 days after transplanting(DAT). Reflectance indices measured at 40th DAT were highly correlated with dry weight(DW) of tobacco leaves and N uptake by leaves. Especially, green normalized difference vegetation index(gNDVI) from spectroradiometer and aNDVI from Crop Circle passive sensor were able to explain 85% and 84% of DW variability and 85% and 92% of N uptake variability, respectively. All the reflectance indices measured at each sampling date during the growing season were significantly correlated with tobacco yield. Especially the gNDVI derived from spectroradiometer readings at the 40th DAT explained 72% of yield variability. N rates of tobacco were distinguished by sufficiency index calculated using the ratio of reflectance indices of stress to optimum plot of N treatment. Consequently results indicate that the reflectance indices by ground-based remote sensor can be used to predict tobacco yield and recommend the optimum application rate of N fertilizer for top dressing of tobacco.
