A case of congenital malaria infection has been studied in a 46-day old female Korean infant. Her mother suffered from malaria infection during pregnancy in Uppervolta, Africa, and returned to Korea at the 9th month of gestation for delivery. At 39 days of age, the clinical features characterized by fever, irritability, pallor, jaundice and hepatosplenomegaly were developed. The laboratory data revealed a hemolytic anemia with thronbocytopenia, hyperbilirubinemia and increased hepatic enzyme values. A peripheral blood smear demonstrated intraerythrocytic malarial parasites and gametocytes of Plasmodium falciparum. She was successfully treated with quinine solfate (25mg/kg/day in three doses for 5 days) and trimethoprimejsulfamethoxazole (8mg/kg/day in two doses for 5 days) orally, and repeated blood smear had been negative for malaria. This report also signifies the first description of congenital malaria in Korea imported from Uppervolta in Africa. A brief review of related literature was made.
A comparative study was performed on two different strains of Leishmania major, chloroquine sensitive strains (Chl$^{S}$) and its mutant chloroquine resistant strains (Chl$^{R}$). Chl$^{R}$ strains were obtained at 5$\times$$10^{-4}$M chloroquine. Remarkable differences were observed at the initial chloroquine uptake in Chl$^{R}$ and Chl$^{S}$, i.e., the rate of uptake was very reduced in Chl$^{R}$ (Km values were 70 nM and 125 nM, respectively). Influx and accumulation of chloroquine were also compared between wild type and mutant. An increasing tendency in both influx and accumulation of chloroquine was shown in Chl$^{S}$, but Chl$^{R}$ demonstrated a rapid release after a little uptake (influx) at the early stage. This result is thought to be basis of their resistance for Chl$^{R}$ strains.
In June of 1983 authors had investigated the occurrence of the avian malaria in the Humboldt penguins imported from Japan to the Farmland Zoo in central district of Korea. The disease was characterized by acute course and high mortality. The peripheral blood smears from the affected penguins demonstrated different developmental stages of Plasmodium sp. in the mature erythrocytes. The predominant gross lesions noticed were pulmonary and epicardial edema and hepato-splenomegaly. Microscopically the lesions were characterized by extensive reticuloendothelial cell hyperplasia with striking feature of exoerythrocytic schizogony affecting a variety of tissues. The report also signifies the first description of a disastrous epizootic of avian malaria in Korea.

The mortality of wild mullet, Mugil cephalus was detected in Kwang- Yang bay on February, 2002. The mullet were infected with Myxobolus sp., the cysts of Myxobolus sp. were found in the mesentery, liver, gill and pharyngeal pocket. The histological findings suggested a systemic infection by the Myxobolus sp.. The spores were measured 10-12 (10.9)${\mu}m$ in length, 9-10 (9.4) ${\mu}m$ in width, 6.4-7.2 (6.8) ${\mu}m$ in thickness, with polar capsules of 4-5.2 (4.4) ${\mu}m$ in length and 2.5-3.3 (2.9) ${\mu}m$ in width.

Malaria is a major cause of death in tropical and sub-tropical countries, killing each year over 1 million people globally; 90% of fatalities occur in African children. Although effective ways to manage malaria now exist, the number of malaria cases is still increasing, due to several factors. In this emergency situation, prompt and effective diagnostic methods are essential for the management and control of malaria. Traditional methods for diagnosing malaria remain problematic; therefore, new technologies have been developed and introduced to overcome the limitations. This review details the currently available diagnostic methods for malaria.
A new natural C-benzylated chalcone, $2',4'-dihydroxy-3'-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-6{\c}-methoxychalcone$ (2), along with two other flavonoids, tiliroside and kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside, and an oxoaporphine alkaloid, lanuginosine were isolated from the aerial parts of Ellipeiopsis cherrevensis (Annonaceae). Two known polyoxygenated cyclohexene derivatives, ferrudiol and zeylenol, and a new analog, ellipeiopsol D, were also isolated. The chalcone 2 exhibited cytotoxic activity against human small-cell lung-cancer (NCl-H187), epidermoid carcinoma (KB) and breast cancer (BC) cell lines with $IC_{50}$ values of 1.40, 5.31 and $13.92\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. This compound also showed antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum with an $IC_{50}$ value of $7.1\;{\mu}g/mL$ as well as antimicrobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis with a MIC of 25 mg/mL.

An enlarged spleen is considered one of the most common signs of malaria, and splenic rupture rarely occurs as an important life-threatening complication. Splenectomy has been recommended as the treatment of choice for hemodynamically unstable patients. However, a very limited number of splenic rupture patients have been treated with transcatheter coil embolization. Here we report a 38-year-old Korean vivax malaria patient with ruptured spleen who was treated successfully by embolization of the splenic artery. The present study showed that angiographic embolization of the splenic artery may be an appropriate option to avoid perioperative harmful effects of splenectomy in malaria patients.

Background: Malaria is a problematic disease in Korea, and microscopic examination of Giemsa-stained blood smear has been used as the gold standard for its diagnosis. However, this technique is time-consuming and has low sensitivity in samples with low numbers of malarial parasites (<20 parasites/μL). Here, we evaluated the performance characteristics of the LG AdvansureTM Malaria P.f./P.v. real-time QPCR (LG life sciences, Korea). Methods: Blood samples from 173 persons who visited Korea University Ansan Hospital were evaluated. QPCR was performed in 73 malaria patients and 100 healthy subjects by using the LG Advansure Malaria P.f./P.v. real-time QPCRR kit, and the results were compared with those of microscopy. The detection limit of this kit was determined by serial dilution of Plasmodium-infected blood with normal blood (blood not infected with Plasmodium). Results: Among the 73 patients that were microscopically confirmed to have malaria (Plasmodium vivax infection, N=70, P. falciparum infection, N=3), 69 patients were diagnosed with P. vivax infection and 3 were diagnosed with P. falciparum infection by LG AdvansureTM Malaria P.f./P.v. realtime QPCR. Both the tests indicated absence of infection in the 100 healthy subjects. The detection limit of LG AdvansureTM Malaria P.f./P.v. real-time QPCR was 0.1 parasite/μL. Conclusions: LG AdvansureTM Malaria P.f./P.v. real-time QPCRis a very sensitive and specific technique and can be used as a confirmatory test for malaria.
