The information of the ion composition in plasma applications is required to characterize a plasma. A better understanding of ion species composition ratio and its spacial distribution, etc. is thus necessary in plasma-related processes, such as thin film deposition, plasma-based ion implantation, semiconductor processing, and so on. In this research, a compact ion mass analyzer that is based on magnetic sector analyzer was developed and its operational characteristics were studied in nitrogen plasma.
A 2.45GHz microwave plasma source with a linear antenna has been developed for low temperature large scale deposition processing. Microwave power is transmitted through WR340 waveguide and a copper rod, linear antenna, is located in a quartz tube. The power matching is effectively achieved by a linear antenna is located at ${\lambda}_g/4$ or $3{\lambda}_g/4$ from the end of WR340 waveguide. The Ar plasma was generated along the surface of quartz tube and a clear standing wave pattern with nearly 10cm wavelength was observed at Ar pressure of 200mTorr and 200W input power. The electron density and electron temperature were investigated by using the electrostatic probe. The electron density and electron temperature were highly measured near the surface of quartz tube. Ar plasma density along the quartz tube is mostly uniform despite standing wave set-up and antenna of long length. A uniform temperature was measured at 10~40cm distance from the end quartz tube and 5cm distance from the surface of quartz tube.

Oridinal thermal spray process has developed into two ways, namely, temperature dominated represented by plasma spraying, and velocity dominated represented by HVOF. It is common for both that the particle materials sprayed are basically in melted or half melted condition. New process has developed recently, that is, Cold Spray and Aerosol Deposition. Particle's heating is limited in CS lower than half of the material's melting point. Moreover, exactly no heating is loaded in AD process. Through the investigation on common feature for these three spraying processes, potential of new material process - Particle Deposition, PD - is considered and proposed.
Process analysis was carried out during deposition of MgO by inductively coupled plasma assisted reactive magnetron sputtering in Ar and $O_2$ ambient. At the initiation of Mg sputtering with bipolar pulsed dc power in Ar ambient, total pressure showed sharp increase and then slow fall. To analyse partial pressure change, QMS was used in downstream region, where the total pressure was maintained as low as $10^{-5}$ Torr during plasma processing, good for ion source and quadrupole operation. At base pressure, the major impurity was $H_2O$ and the second major impurity was $CO/N_2$ about 10%. During sputtering of Mg in Ar, $H_2$ soared up to 10.7% of Ar and remained as the major impurity during all the later process time. When $O_2$ was mixed with Ar, the partial pressure of Ar decreased in proportion to $O_2$ flow rate and that of $H_2$ dropped down to 2%. It was understood as Mg target surface was oxidized to stop $H_2$ emission by Ar ion sputtering. With ICP turned on, the major impurity $H_2$ was converted into $H_2O$ consuming $O_2$ and C was also oxidized to evolve CO and $CO_2$.
Atmosphere Plasmas of Gas Discharge (APGD) have been used in plasma sources for material processing such as etching, deposition, surface modification, etc. This study is to investigate and understand the fundamental plasma discharge properties. Especially, $SF_6/N_2$ mixed gas would be used in power transformer, GIS (Gas insulated switchgear) and so on. In this paper, we developed a one dimensional fluid simulation model with capacitively coupled plasma chamber at the atmosphere pressure (760 [Torr]). 38 kinds of $SF_6/N_2$ plasma particles which are an electron, two positive ions (${SF_5}^+$, ${N_2}^+$), five negative ions (${SF_6}^-$, ${SF_5}^-$, ${SF_4}^-$, ${F_2}^-$, ${F_1}^-$), thirty excitation and vibrational particles for $N_2$ were considered in this computation. The $N_2$ gases of 20%, 50%, 80% were mixed in $SF_6$ gas. As the amount of $N_2$ gas was increased, the properties of electro-negative plasma moved toward the electro-positive plasma.
Diamondlike carbon (DLC) coatings were deposited on alumina ceramic seals using a plasma immersion ion deposition technique (PIID). Then they were subjected to tribological tests using a pin-on-disc tribometer under a high load (1.3 GPa) and under elevated temperatures up to 400C. Coefficients of friction (COFs) were recorded and compared with that of the untreated alumina while the wear tracks were analyzed using SEM with EDS to characterize the DLC films. To enhance the DLC adhesion to the substrate, various interlayers including Si and Cr were deposited using the PIID process or an ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) method. It was observed that the DLC coating, if adhering well to the substrate, reduced the COFs significantly, from 0.4-0.8 for the uncoated alumina to about 0.05-0.1, within the tested temperature range. The adhesion was determined by the interlayer type and possibly by the application method. Cr interlayer did not perform as well as the Si interlayer. This could also be due to the fact that the Cr interlayer and the subsequent DLC coating had to be done in two different processing systems, while both the Si interlayer and the subsequent DLC film were deposited in one system without breaking the chamber. The coating failure mode was found to be delamination between the Cr and the alumina substrate. In contrast, the Si interlayer with proper DLC deposition procedures resulted in very good adhesion and hence excellent tribological performance. Further study may lead to future DLC applications of ceramic seals.
Joining of NiO-YSZ to 316 stainless steel was carried out with B-Ni2 brazing alloy (3 wt% Fe, 4.5 wt% Si, 3.2 wt% B, 7 wt% Cr, Ni-balance, m.p. 971-$999^{\circ}C$) to seal the NiO-YSZ anode/316 stainless steel interconnect structure in a SOFC. In the present research, interfacial (chemical) reactions during brazing at the NiO-YSZ/316 stainless steel interconnect were enhanced by the two processing methods, a) addition of an electroless nickel plate to NiO-YSZ as a coating or b) deposition of titanium layer onto NiO-YSZ by magnetron plasma sputtering method, with process variables and procedures optimized during the pre-processing. Brazing was performed in a cold-wall vacuum furnace at $1080^{\circ}C$. Post-brazing interfacial morphologies between NiO-YSZ and 316 stainless steel were examined by SEM and EDS methods. The results indicate that B-Ni2 brazing filler alloy was fused fully during brazing and continuous interfacial layer formation depended on the method of pre-coating NiO-YSZ. The inter-diffusion of elements was promoted by titanium-deposition: the diffusion reaction thickness of the interfacial area was reduced to less than 5 ${\mu}m$ compared to 100 ${\mu}m$ for electroless nickel-deposited NiO-YSZ cermet.
The usage of a stationary plasma thruster (SPT) ion source, invented previously for space application in Russia, in experiments with surface modifications and film deposition systems is reported here. Plasma in the SPT is formed and accelerated in electric discharge taking place in the crossed axial electric and radial magnetic fields. Brief description of the construction of specific model of SPT used in the experiments is presented. With gas flow rate 39ml/min, ion current distributions at several distances from the source are obtained. These was equal to 1~3 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ within an ion beam ejection angle of $\pm$20$^{\circ}$with discharge voltage 160V for Ar as a working gas. Such an extremely high ion current density allows us to obtain the Ti metal films with deposition rate of $\AA$/sec by sputtering of Ti target. It is shown a possibility of using of reactive gases in SPT (O2 and N2) along with high purity inert gases used for cathode to prevent the latter contamination. It is shown the SPT can be operated at the discharge and accelerating boltages up to 600V. The results of presented experiments show high promises of the SPT in sputtering and surface modification systems for deposition of oxide thin films on Si or polymer substrates for semiconductor devices, optical coatings and metal corrosion barrier layers. Also, we have been tried to establish in application of the modeling expertise gained in electric and ionic propulsion to permit numerical simulation of additional processing systems. In this mechanism, it will be compared with conventional DC sputtering for film microstructure, chemical composition and crystallographic considerations.

The discovery of light emission in nanostructured silicon has opened up new avenues of research in nano-silicon based devices. One such pathway is the application of silicon quantum dots in advanced photovoltaic and light emitting devices. Recently, there is increasing interest on the silicon quantum dots (c-Si QDs) films embedded in amorphous hydrogenated silicon-nitride dielectric matrix (a-SiNx: H), which are familiar as c-Si/a-SiNx:H QDs thin films. However, due to the limitation of the requirement of a very high deposition temperature along with post annealing and a low growth rate, extensive research are being undertaken to elevate these issues, for the point of view of applications, using plasma assisted deposition methods by using different plasma concepts. This work addresses about rapid growth and single step development of c-Si/a-SiNx:H QDs thin films deposited by RF (13.56 MHz) and ultra-high frequency (UHF ~ 320 MHz) low-pressure plasma processing of a mixture of silane (SiH4) and ammonia (NH3) gases diluted in hydrogen (H2) at a low growth temperature ($230^{\circ}C$). In the films the c-Si QDs of varying size, with an overall crystallinity of 60-80 %, are embedded in an a-SiNx: H matrix. The important result includes the formation of the tunable QD size of ~ 5-20 nm, having a thermodynamically favorable <220> crystallographic orientation, along with distinct signatures of the growth of ${\alpha}$-Si3N4 and ${\beta}$-Si3N4 components. Also, the roles of different plasma characteristics on the film properties are investigated using various plasma diagnostics and film analysis tools.
Hydrogenated amorphous carbon(a-C:H) films are prepared by rf plasma CVD in a $CH_4$ source gas system diluted with Ar of $H_2$. The spectra of emissive and reactive species in the plasma are detected using in stiu optical emission spectroscopy. Inaddition, the relationship between the film properties which can be varied by the deposition parameters and the Raman spectra is studied. In the $CH_4/H_2$ gas system, the emission intensities of CH and $H \tau$ decrease and those of $H \alpha$, $H \beta$, $C_2$ and Ar increase with increasing $H_2$ concentration, The formation of $C_2$ and CH in the $CH_4/Ar/H_2$ gas system is greatly suppressed by hydrogen addition and the excess of hydrogen addition is found to form graphite structure. The $C_2$ formation in the gas phase enhances a-C:H film formation.
