  • Carbon nitride films were grown on Si (100) substrate by a laser-electric discharge method with and without a magnetic field assistance. The magnetic field leads to vapor plume plasma expending upon the ambient arc discharge plasma area. Influence of the magnetic field has resulted in increase of a crystallite size in the films due to bombardment (heating) of Si substrates by energetic carbon and nitrogen species generated during cyclotron motion of electrons in the discharge zone. Many crystalline grains were observed in the morphology of the deposited films by scanning electron microscopy. In order to determine the structural crystalline parameters, X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to analysis the grown films.

  • In this study, three-dimensional heat flow in laser beam welding for deep penetration was analyzed by using F.E.M common code, and then the results were compared with the experimental data. The models for analysis are full penetration welds and are made at three different laser powers (6, 9.9, 4.5 kW) with two different welding speeds (5.8mm/s, 5mm/s). The characteristics of thermal absorption by the workpiece during deep penetration laser welding can be represented by a combination of line heat source through the workpiece and distributed heat source at the top surface due to the plasma plume above the top surface. This gives an insight into the way in which the beam interacts with the material being welded. The analyses performed with the combined heat source models show comparatively good agreement between the experimental and calculated melt temperature isotherm, i.e, the fusion zone boundary. The results are used to explain the "nail head" appearance of fusion zone, which is quite common in laser beam welds.eam welds.

  • From time-resolved optical emission spectra, we have investigated the effects of a transverse magnetic field on the expansion of a plasma plume produced by laser ablation of a ZnO:$P_2O_5$ ceramic target in oxygen active atmosphere. The emission spectra of $Zn^{+*}$, $P^{+*}$, and $Zn^*$ neutrals in the presence of magnetic field turn out to be considerably different from those without magnetic field. The characteristics of the deposited films grown on amorphous fused silica substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) are examined by analyzing their photoluminescence (PL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-visible spectra.

  • Mycobacterial cell walls comprise thick and diverse lipids and glycolipids that act as a permeability barrier to antibiotics or other chemical agents. The use of OH radicals from a non-thermal plasma jet (NTPJ) for the inactivation of mycobacteria in aqueous solution was adopted as a novel approach. Addition of water vapor in a nitrogen plasma jet generated OH radicals, which converted to hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) that inactivated non-pathogenic Mycobacterium smegmatis and pathogenic Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv. A stable plasma plume was obtained from a nitrogen plasma jet with 1.91 W of power, killing Escherichia coli and mycobacteria effectively, whereas addition of catalase decreased the effects of the former. Mycobacteria were more resistant than E. coli to NTPJ treatment. Plasma treatment enhanced intracellular ROS production and upregulation of genes related to ROS stress responses (thiolrelated oxidoreductases, such as SseA and DoxX, and ferric uptake regulator furA). Morphological changes of M. smegmatis and M. tuberculosis H37Rv were observed after 5 min treatment with $N_2+H_2O$ plasma, but not of pre-incubated sample with catalase. This finding indicates that the bactericidal efficacy of NTPJ is related to the toxicity of OH and $H_2O_2$ radicals in cells. Therefore, our study suggests that NTPJ treatment may effectively control pulmonary infections caused by M. tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) such as M. avium or M. abscessus in water.

  • The electric potential of plasma column is measured with the high voltage probe in a pair of atmospheric plasma jets operated by AC-voltage. According to the polarity of voltage applied to the electrodes, the polarity of plasma column potential has the same polarity of applied voltage. The high potential of plasma column at the side of high voltage electrode is decreased linearly along the plasma column to the ground side. Therefore, the plasma column seams to be a kind of resistor whose resistivity is a few 10s $M{\Omega}/m$. In the experiment of double-jets system, the polarity of plasma potential is verified to be the same polarity to the applied voltage. When the different voltage polarities are applied to the electrodes of double plasma jets, the attractive force is acted between two plumes at the merged plasma and the plasma potential is measured to be low as a few 10s V. When the same polarity of voltage is applied to the electrode, the repulsive force is acted and the plasma potential is measured to be high as a several 100s V at the merged plumes. In the exposure of plasma plume on the bio-substrate with the double plasma jets, the electric shock and thermal damage might be proportional to the plasma power which is the multiplication of the plasma potential and the plasma current.

  • Basic experiments were carried out using the THT-IV low-power Hall thruster to examine the influences of magnetic field shape and strength, and acceleration channel length on thruster performance and to establish guidelines for design of high-performance Hall thrusters. Thrusts were measured with varying magnetic field and channel structure. Exhaust plasma diagnostic measurement was also made to evaluate plume divergent angles and voltage utilization efficiencies. Ion current spatial profiles were measured with a Faraday cup, and ion energy distribution functions were estimated from data with a retarding potential analyzer. The thruster was stably operated with a highest performance under an optimum acceleration channel length of 20 mm and an optimum magnetic field with a maximum strength of about 150 Gauss near the channel exit and with some shape considering ion acceleration directions. Accordingly, an optimum magnetic field and channel structure is considered to exist under an operational condition, related to inner physical phenomena of plasma production, ion acceleration and exhaust plasma feature. A new Hall thruster was designed with basic research data of the THT-IV thruster. With the thruster with many considerations, long stable operations were achieved. In all experiments at 200-400 V with 1.5-3 mg/s, the thrust and the specific impulse ranged from 15 to 70 mN and from 1100 to 2300 see, respectively, in a low electric power range of 300~1300 W. The thrust efficiency reached 55 %. Hence, a large map of the thruster performance was successfully made. The thermal characteristics were also examined with data of both measured and calculated temperatures in the thruster body. Thermally safe conditions were achieved with all input powers.

  • TiO$_2$-WO$_3$(8.2wt%) coatings were prepared by the APS (Atmospheric Plasma Spraying) process to clarify the relationship between the process parameters(H$_2$ gas flow rate of plasma 2nd gas and spraying distance) of the APS coating and photo-decomposition efficiency kinetics of the MB(methylene blue) aqueous solution decomposition and to understand the effect of addition of WO$_3$ on photocatalytic properties of TiO$_2$ sprayed coating. Further, the temperature and velocity of flying particles were measured by DPV-2000 to investigate the relationship between microstructure of coatings and process parameters. Properties of coatins were investigated by XRD, SEM, XPS, RAMAN, UV/VIS spectrometer. In case of the TiO$_2$-WO$_3$(8.2wt%) coating, it had a lower anatase fraction than that of pure-TiO$_2$ coatings because of flying in the higher temperature plasma plume by the heavy weight of TiO$_2$, WO$_3$. And, when WO$_3$ added powders were spayed, the doping effects of W ions substituted into the Ti ion sites was not occured during melting and solidification cycles of spraying. It was found that the addition of WO$_3$ was ineffective effective on increasing photo-decomposition efficiency of TiO$_2$ sprayed coating.

  • This work is devoted to an experimental investigation on conceptual design of dual consecutive stage micro plasma thruster (${\mu}PT$). Optimization study on the thruster configuration has been performed for various electrode gap distances from 1 mm to 2 mm and the hole diameter from 0.3 mm to 2 mm depending on desired operating conditions and corresponding nozzle design requirement. The operation of ${\mu}PT$ at low pressure from $10^{-1}$ Torr to $10^{-4}$ Torr and at various argon flow rates ranging from 5 sccm to 300 sccm has been studied to understand the physic of plasma and the gas dynamics in details. The specific impulse can reach up to 3000-4000 seconds at low power consumptions from 1 to 5 W. Image of exhaust plume from ${\mu}PT$ will be provided and electrical characteristics is also mentioned in this paper.

  • A new concept of a small thruster for altitude control of a micro/nano class satellite is developed, which utilizes the pulsed laser energy. As the laser-based thruster does not require burning of any fuel, it gives promise of small satellite design criteria, namely light weight and cost effectiveness. In this paper, we develop gel-type material for generating strong plasma plume for enhancing thrust for propulsion. Moreover, we quantify the level of thrust via the momentum coupling coefficient measured by the pendulum system. We discover that the driving force is significantly improved via the gel-typed propellant for laser ablation.

  • A ray-based approach is developed to calculate the scattering from inhomogeneous dielectric objects. This approach is a natural extension of the "shooting and bouncing ray(SBR)" technique developed earlier for calculating the radar cross section of cavity structures and complex targets. In this formulation, a dense grid of rays representing the incident field is shot toward the scatterer. The curved trajectory, amplitude, phase and polarization of the ray fields inside the inhomogeneous object are computed numerically based on the laws of geometrical optics. The contributions of the exting rays to the exterior scattered field are then calculated by using the equivalence principle in conjunction with " a ray-tube integration" scheme. The ray-based approach is applied for the effect of an arcjet plasma plume on satellite reflector performance and backscattering from inhomogeneous objects.
