Plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO) has attracted attention as a surface treatment which has high wear resistance and corrosion resistance. PEO is generally considered as cost-effective, environmentally friendly and superior in terms of coating performance. Most of studies about the PEO processes have been applied to light metals such as Al and Mg. Because the strength of Al and Mg is weaker than that of steel, there is a limit to the application. In this study, PEO process was used to form oxide coatings on Hot dipped aluminized(HDA) steel and the characteristics of the coating film according to the PEO current density were studied. The morphology was observed by SEM and component was analyzed by using EDS. The corrosion behaviors of PEO coating films were estimated by exposing salt spray test at 5 wt.% NaCl solution and measuring polarization curves in deaerated 3 wt.% NaCl solution. With the increase of PEO process current density, the pore size of the coating surface and the thickness of coating increased. It was confirmed that no Fe component was present on the coating surface. PEO coating films obviously showed good corrosion resistance compared with HDA. It is considered that the PEO coating acts as a barrier to protect the base material from external factors causing corrosion.
The electrolytic reduction of spent oxide fuel involves the liberation of oxygen in a molten LiCl electrolyte, which results in a chemically aggressive environment that is too corrosive for typical structural materials. It is essential to choose the optimum material for the process equipment handling molten salt. IN713LC is one of the candidate materials proposed for application in electrolytic reduction process. In this study, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) top coat was applied to a surface of IN713LC with an aluminized metallic bond coat by an optimized plasma spray process, and were investigated the corrosion behavior at $675^{\circ}C$ for 216 hours in the molten salt $LiCl-Li_2O$ under an oxidizing atmosphere. The as-coated and tested specimens were examined by OM, SEM/EDS and XRD, respectively. The bare superalloy reveals obvious weight loss, and the corrosion layer formed on the surface of the bare superalloy was spalled due to the rapid scale growth and thermal stress. The top coatings showed a much better hot-corrosion resistance in the presence of $LiCl-Li_2O$ molten salt when compared to those of the uncoated superalloy and the aluminized bond coatings. These coatings have been found to be beneficial for increasing to the hot-corrosion resistance of the structural materials for handling high temperature lithium molten salts.
This article reports for the first time on the lateral growth of PEO (plasma electrolytic oxidation) films on Al1050 alloy by the application of anodic pulse current in an alkaline electrolyte. Generation of microarcs was observed at the edges initially and then moved towards the central region with PEO treatment time. Disc type PEO film islands with about $20{\mu}m$ diameter were formed first and they grew laterally by the formation of new disc type PEO films at the edge of pre-formed PEO islands. The PEO film islands were found to be interconnected completely and form a continuous PEO film when generation of small size microarcs are terminated at the central part of the specimen, resulting in very smooth surface with low surface roughness less than $1{\mu}m$ of $R_a$. Further PEO treatment after the complete interconnection of PEO films islands showed local thickening of PEO films by vertical growth. It is concluded that very smooth PEO film surface can be obtained by lateral growth mechanism rather than vertical growth of them.
PEO (plasma electrolytic oxidation) was applied to modify the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy in this study. The mixed solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) was used as the electrolyte, and 0 - 0.05 g/L of Ca-GP (Glycerol Phosphate Calcium salt) was added in the electrolyte as an additive. PEO treatment was conducted at a current density of 30mA/cm2 for 5 minutes using a DC power supply. The surface properties were identified by SEM, XRD and surface roughness analyses, and the corrosion resistance was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization and immersion tests. In addition, the biocompatibility was evaluated by immersion test in SBF solution. As the concentration of Ca-GP was increased, the surface morphology was denser and more uniform, and the amount of Ca and the thickness of oxide layer increased. Only Mg peak was observed in XRD analysis due to very thin oxide layer. The corrosion resistance of PEO-treated samples increased with the concentration of Ca-GP in comparision with the untreated sample. In particular, the highest corrosion resistance was identified at the group of 0.04g Ca-GP through potentiodynamic polarization and immersion tests in saline solution (0.9 wt.%NaCl). During the immersion in saline solution, pH rapidly increased at the beginning of immersion period due to rapid corrosion, and then increase rate of pH decreased. However, the pH value in the SBF temporarily increased from 7.4 to 8.5 during the day, then decreased due to the inhibition of corrosion with HA(hydroxyapatite) formation.
Plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) is a kind of anodization, in which a very high voltage or current is applied to a metal substrate in various electrolytes, allowing distinctly thick thickness of the oxide film with outstanding film properties, such as a good corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, thermal stability, and excellent adhesion to a substrate. Herein, we tried to find the optimal pretreatment conditions among commercially available solutions in order to produce PEO anodizing at relatively low voltage. We characterized the surface morphologies of the sample by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and investigated color parameters of the pretreated surface of Ti by spectrophotometer.
This paper deals with anodic oxidation behavior of AZ31 Mg alloy in aqueous solutions containing various NaF concentrations from 0.01 M to 1 M. Three different voltage-time curves and anodic oxide formation behaviors appeared with concentration of NaF in deionized water. When NaF concentration is lower than 0.02 M, the voltage of AZ31 Mg alloy increased linearly and then reached a steady-state value more than 200 V, and large size pits and thin oxide layer were formed. When NaF concentration is between 0.05 M and 0.1 M, the voltage of AZ31 Mg alloy showed large periodic fluctuations of about 30 ~ 50 V around more than 200 V and large number of small particles were observed. If NaF concentration is higher than 0.2 M, PEO films can be formed without visible arcs under solution pH 6.5 ~ 7.5 by F- ions without help of OH- ions.
Titanium and its alloys have been used in the field dental and orthopedic implants because of their excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Despite these attractive properties, their passive films were somewhat bioinert in nature so that sufficient adhesion of bone cells to implant surface was delayed after surgical treatment. Recently, plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) of titanium metal has attracted a great deal of attention is a comparatively convenient and effective technique and good adhesion to substrates and it enhances wear and corrosion resistances and produces thick, hard, and strong oxide coatings. Silicon(Si), Zinc(Zn), and Manganese(Mn) have a beneficial effect on bone. Si in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. And, Zn has been shown to be responsible for variations in body weight, bone length and bone biomechanical properties. Also, Mn influences regulation of bone remodeling because its low content in body is connected with the rise of the concentration of calcium, phosphates and phosphatase out of cells. The objective of this work was research on bone-like apatite morphology on Si-Zn-Mn-hydroxyapatite coating on Ti-6Al-4V alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation. Anodized alloys were prepared at 280V voltage in the solution containing Si, Zn, and Mn ions. The surface characteristics of PEO treated Ti-6Al-4V alloy were investigated using XRD, FE-SEM, and EDS.
Crystal structure and chemical compositions of Plasma electrolytic oxidized layer of A-1100, A-2024, A-5052, A-6061, A-6063, A-7075, ACD-7B and ACD-12 were investigated. The electrolyte for plasma electrolytic oxidation was mixture of distilled water, $Na_2P_2O_7$, Cu, Cr metal salts and KOH. ${\eta}$-Alumina, as well as ${\alpha}$-alumina, was main crystal phase. Another crystals such as $(Al_{0.948}Cr_{0.052})_2O_3$ and $(Al_{0.9}Cr_{0.1})_2O_3$ were also formed in the oxide layer. It was thought that the effect of electrolyte compositions on the physical properties and crystal system of PEO layers was greater than the effect of Al alloy composition variation.
Physical properties of plasma electrolytic oxidized layers of 8 different kinds of Al alloys, A-1100, A-2024, A-5052, A-6061, A-6063, A-7075, ACD-7B and ACD-12 were investigated. The electrolyte for plasma electrolytic oxidation was mixture of distilled water, $Na_2P_2O_7$, KOH and some metal salts. Growth rate of oxide layer was slower in $Na_2P_2O_7$ electrolyte system than in $Na_2SiO_3$ system, and Ra50 surface roughness of oxidized layer was below $1.2{\mu}m$. Surface hardness in $Na_2P_2O_7$ electrolyte system is higher than in $Na_2SiO_3$ system, and roughness was lower in $Na_2P_2O_7$ electrolyte system than in $Na_2SiO_3$ system.
