Atmospheric Pressure Plasmas have pioneered a new field of plasma for biomedical application bridging plasma physics and biology. Biological and medical applications of plasmas have attracted considerable attention due to promising applications in medicine such as electro-surgery, dentistry, skin care and sterilization of heat-sensitive medical instruments [1]. Traditional approaches using electronic devices have limits in heating, high voltage shock, and high current shock for patients. It is a great demand for plasma medical industrial acceptance that the plasma generation device should be compact, inexpensive, and safe for patients. Microwave-excited micro-plasma has the highest feasibility compared with other types of plasma sources since it has the advantages of low power, low voltage, safety from high-voltage shock, electromagnetic compatibility, and long lifetime due to the low energy of striking ions [2]. Recent experiment [2] shows three-log reduction within 180-s treatment of S. mutans with a low-power palm-size microwave power module for biomedical application. Experiments using microwave plasma are discussed. This low-power palm-size microwave power module board includes a power amplifier (PA) chip, a phase locked loop (PLL) chip, and an impedance matching network. As it has been a success, more compact-size module is needed for the portability of microwave devices and for the various medical applications of microwave plasma source. For the plasma generator, a 1.35-GHz coaxial transmission line resonator (CTLR) [3] is used. The way of reducing the size and enhancing the performances of the module is examined.

In this experimental investigation, various plasma-sprayed zirconia contained coatings and a kind of alumina-zirconia coating were studied to gain a better understanding of their tribological behaviour under dry contact condition in a reciprocating motion at temperature of 200℃. Particular attention was made for finding appropriate coatings in cylinder liner/piston ring application with an emphasis on the antiwear property. In order to identify the wear mechanism, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope), optical micrograph, and roughness tester were used. Alumina-zirconia and 8% yttria-zirconia were found to be most appropriate for the application to the cylinder liner/piston ring and, especially, alumina-zirconia exhibited highest wear-resistance and also showed good friction characteristics. Wear mechanisms of ceramic coatings identified.
In this work, to make it possible to generate glow discharge in atmospheric pressure condition with relatively high and wide electric field, micro channel reactor is proposed. Si DRIE and Cr deposition by Ebeam evaporation is used to make channel and bottom electrode layer. Upper electrode is made from ITO glass to visualize discharge within micro channel. Fabricated reactor is verified by generating uniform glow plasma with N2 / He gases each as working fluid. The range of gas electric field to generate glow plasma is from about 200 V/cm and upper limit is not observed in tested condition of up to 150 kV/cm. This data shows that micro channel plasma reactor is more versatile. Indirect estimation of electron temperature in this reactor can be inferred that the electron temperature within glow discharge in micro reactor lies $0{\sim}2eV$. This research demonstrates that the reactor is appropriate in application that needs to maintain low temperature condition during chemical process.

Simultaneous effects of $C_2H_4$ injection and heterogeneous chemical reactions on non-thermal plasma process to remove $SO_2$ and NOx from flue gas were investigated in the present experimental study. The present results showed that 40% of the electrical power can be reduced in $C_2H_4$ injection and heterogeneous chemical reaction are simultaneously included in the non-thermal plasma precess. As an effort to apply the non-thermal plasma technique to practical flue gas treatment system, a wire-plate type reactor which has technically similar geometry of industrial electrostatic precipitators is used instead of other types of reactors, such as wire-cylinder, packed-bed and surface discharge which are inappropriate to industrial application. In the present study, the photo pictures of positive streamer corona taken by ICCD camera, voltage and current oscillograms, and design criteria of a wire-plate type reactor are also shown, which are needed for industrial application of the non-thermal plasma process.
Pharmacokinetics of a new capsaicin analog, DA-5018 were evaluated after a subcutaneous injection or topical application of $[^{14}C]$--labelled or unlabelled DA-5018 to rats and rabbits. After subcutaneous injection of $_{14}$c-labelled or unlabelled DA-5018, 0.5 mg/kg (equivalent to DA-5018) to rats, the plasma total activity peaked at 2 hr with the terminal half life of 5.34 hr, however, unlabelled-DA-5018 peaked at 1 hr with the terminal half life of 1.26 hr. Moreover, the AUC (0.726 versus 0.2337g hr/ml) and MRT (7.82 versus 3.55 hr) increased significantly based on total radioactivity compared with intact DA-5018. Above data indicated that DA-5018 is extensively metabolized in rats and the terminal half- life of the metabolite(5) had a longer half-life than that of DA-5018. The cumulative percentages of biliary excretion of dose after subcutaneous injection of $[^{14}C]$DA-5018 was 40.2%, however, the value was only 2.14% when unlabelled DA-5018 was injected. After topical application of 0.1% or 0.3% $_{14}$C-labelled or unlabelled DA-5018 cream, 500 mg/kg to rats, the plasma and tissue concentrations except applied skin were under the detection limit. After consecutive 7 days topical application of unlabelled DA-5018, 0.1% and 0.3% cream to rats, the plasma concentrations were also under the detection limit. But the urinary excretion of DA-5018 was significantly increased by repeated topical administration. After topical application of unlabelled DA-5018, 0.1% and 0.3% cream to rabbits, the plasma and urine concentrations were under the detection limit. Above data indicated that the skin permeation of DA-5018 was lower and the metabolism of DA-5018 was higher in rabbits than that in rats.

Silicon nanoparticles can be synthesized in a standard radio-frequency glow discharge system at low temperature (${\sim}200^{\circ}C$). Plasma synthesis of silicon nanoparticles, initially a side effect of powder formation, has become over the years an exciting field of research which has opened the way to new opportunities in the field of materials deposition and their application to optoelectronic devices. Hydrogenated polymorphous silicon (pm-Si:H) has a peculiar microstructure, namely a small volume fraction of plasma synthesized silicon nanoparticles embedded in an amorphous matrix, which originates from the unique deposition mechanism. Detailed discussion on plasma synthesis of silicon nanoparticles, growth mechanism and photovoltaic application of pm-Si:H will be presented.

An RF inductively coupled plasma (ICP) torch has been developed as a typical thermal plasma generator and reactor. It has been applied to various materials processings such as plasma flash evaporation, thermal plasma CVD, plasma spraying, and plasma waste disposal. The RF ICP reactor has been generally operated under one atmospheric pressure. Lately the characteristics of low pressure RF ICP is attracting a great deal of attention in the field of plasma application. In our researches of RF plasma applications, low pressure RF ICP is mainly used. In many cases, the plasma generated by the ICP torch under low pressure seems to be rather capacitive, but high density ICP can be easily generated by our RF plasma torch with 3 turns coil and a suitable maching circuiit, using 13.56 MHz RF generator. Plasma surface modification (surface hardening by plasma nitriding and plasma carbo-nitriding), plasma synthesis of AIN, and plasma CVD of BN, B-C-N compound and diamond were practiced by using low pressure RF plasma, and the effects of negative and positive bias voltage impression to the substrate on surface modification and CVD were investigated in details. Only a part of the interesting results obtained is reported in this paper.

It has been known that, under certain conditions, application of low-temperature atmospheric-pressure plasmas can enhance proliferation of cells. In this study, conditions for optimal cell proliferation were examined for various cells relevant for orthopaedic applications. Plasmas used in our experiments were generated by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) with a helium flow (of approximately 3 litter/min) into ambient air at atmospheric pressure by a 10 kV~20 kHz power supply. Such plasmas were directly applied to a medium, in which cells of interest were cultured. The cells examined in this study were human synoviocytes, rat mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow or adipose tissue, a mouse osteoblastic cell line (MC3T3-E1), a mouse embryonic mesenchymal cell line (C3H-10T1/2), human osteosarcoma cells (HOS), a mouse myoblast cell line (C2C12), and rat Schwann cells. Since cell proliferation can be enhanced even if the cells are not directly exposed to plasmas but cultured in a medium that is pre-treated by plasma application, it is surmised that long-life free radicals generated in the medium by plasma application stimulate cell proliferation if their densities are appropriate. The level of free radical generation in the medium was examined by dROMs tests and correlation between cell proliferation and oxidative stress was observed. Other applications of plasma medicine in orthopaedics, such as plasma modification of artificial bones and wound healing effects by direct plasma application for mouse models, will be also discussed. The work has been done in collaboration with Prof. H. Yoshikawa and his group members at the School of Medicine, Osaka University.
The application of disinfection models on the plasma process was investigated. Nine empirical models were used to find an optimum model. The variation of parameters in model according to the operating conditions (first voltage, second voltage, air flow rate, pH) were investigated in order to explain the disinfection model. In this experiment, the DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) plasma reactor was used to inactivate Ralstonia Solanacearum which cause wilt in tomato plantation. Optimum disinfection models were chosen among the nine models by the application of statistical SSE (sum of squared error), RMSE (root mean sum of squared error), $r^2$ values on the experimental data using the GInaFiT software in Microsoft Excel. The optimum model was shown as Weibull+talil model followed by Log-linear+ Shoulder+Tail model. Two models were applied to the experimental data according to the variation of the operating conditions. In Weibull+talil model, Log10($N_o$), Log10($N_{res}$), ${\delta}$ and p values were examined. And in Log-linear+Shoulder+Tail model, the Log10($N_o$), Log10($N_{res}$), $k_{max}$, Sl values were calculated and examined.
