In 2006 fall, a preliminary survey of viruses in two important medicinal plants, Cynanchum wilfordii and C. auriculatum, was conducted on the experimental fields at the Agricultural Research and Extension Services of Chungbuk province in Korea. On each experimental fields, percentage of virus infection was ranged from 20 to 80%, and especially an average of disease incidence propagated by roots was twice higher than that by seeds. The various symptoms were observed in Cynanchum spp. plants, such as mosaic, mottle, necrosis, yellowing, chlorotic spot and malformation etc. In electron microscopic examination of crude sap extracts, filamentous rod particles with 390-730 nm were observed in most samples. The virus particles were purified from the leaves of C. wilfordii with typical mosaic symptom, and the viral RNA was extracted from this sample containing 430-845 nm long filamentous rod. To identify the viruses, reverse transcription followed by PCR with random primers was carried out. The putative sequences of P3 and coat protein of potyvirus were obtained. From a BLAST of the two sequences, they showed 26-38% and 62-72% identities to potyviruses, respectively. In SDS-PAGE analysis, the subunit of coat protein was approximately 30.3 kDa, close to the coat protein of potyvirus. In bioassay with 21 species in 7 families, Chenopodium quinoa showed local lesion on inoculated leave and chlorotic spot on upper leave, but the others were not infected. RT-PCR detection using specific primer of C. wilfordii and C. auriculatum samples, all of 24 samples with virus symptom was positive, and five out of seven samples without virus symptom were also positive. On the basis of these data, the virus could be considered as a new member of potyvirus. We suggested that the name of the virus was Keunjorong mosaic virus (KjMV) after the common Korean name of C. wilfordii.

During the spring season of 2014, a total of 148 melon and watermelon leaf samples were collected from symptomatic and asymptomatic plants in the western and southwestern regions of Saudi Arabia and were tested for the presence of Watermelon chlorotic stunt virus (WmCSV) and other suspected cucurbit viruses by double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Ninety-eight samples were found to be positive for the presence of WmCSV, nine samples were positive for the presence of Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus (CYSDV), and 22 showed a mixed infection with both WmCSV and CYSDV. No other cucurbit viruses were detected in any of the samples. Host range experiments revealed that eight out of fourteen tested plant species were susceptible to WmCSV. PCR products of approximately 1.2 kb were obtained after amplification using primers specifically targeting the coat protein region of WmCSV. Positive PCR results were confirmed by dot blot hybridization. Coat protein gene sequences from eleven WmCSV isolates indicated that the highest identity was between the 104WMA-SA isolate from the Wadi Baish location and a previously reported isolate from the AL-Lith location in Saudi Arabia. The lowest identity was observed between the 42WMA-SA isolate and an isolate from Palestine.

A total of 18 Newcastle disease virus (NDV) isolates that were recovered from 1949 through 1997 were characterized and pathotyped. All viruses were highly virulent as determined by intracerebral pathogenicity indices ${\geq}1.81$ in day-old. These pathotypes are typical for viscerotropic velogenic NDV (VVNDV) pathotype viruses. Some differences were observed for the chicken red blood cell elution rate and thermostability of the hemagglutinin at $56^{\circ}C$. Three antigenic groups were identified by a hemagglutination-inhibition assay using NDV monoclonal antibodies. And the predominant gross lesions were as follows: discharge from the nasal cavity, tracheal mucus, petechial hemorrhage in the heart fat, kidney urates and hemorrhage with or without necrosis in the gastrointestinal tract. Severe hemorrhagic or necrotic lesions were also noted in the lymphoid organs and were localized primarily in the spleen and cecal tonsil. However, differences in the occurrence and frequency of the gross lesions were observed between the virus strains. Among them, NDV strains that induced neurological symptoms belonged only to genotype VI. This strain had spread throughout Korea during the late 1980s to the 1990s, which suggests that specific VVNDVs genotypes might result in neurological symptoms.

Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) has occurred on fields annually disease occurrence rates were 73.3% in 2005, 53.3% in 2006 and 41.6% in 2007 at Anyang area in Gyeonggi Province. Seasonal occurrence pattern of TSWV showed a dramatic increase from 8.7% in late May to 30.1 % in early June in 2007 at Anyang area, coincided with the high population of a thrip, Frank-liniella occidentalis at that time. The rate of viruliferous thrips with TSWV on lettuce and red pepper was 20.2% and 52.1%, respectively, in greenhouses. Dazomat, soil fumigation pesticide, reduced TSWV disease incidence drastically on table tomato as treatment the chemical into the soil with humidity in early spring in 2006 and 2007. Spraying insecticide periodically after treatment with Dazomat was more effective to control TSWV than spraying if on plants or applying into the soil of the insecticide during growing season. Control efficiency through treatments both of the soil fumigation and of spraying insecticide was significantly high with 85.3% in 2006 and 87.8% in 2007. Removing the potential vector from the soil of TSWV infested area can be an effective strategy for reducing TSWV disease.

Nervous necrosis virus (NNV) is a deadly infectious disease that affects several fish species. It has been found that the NNV utilizes grouper heat shock cognate protein 70 (GHSC70) to enter the host cell. Thus, blocking the virus entry by targeting the responsible protein can protect the fishes from disease. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the inhibitory potentiality of 70 compounds of Azadirachta indica (Neem plant) which has been reported to show potential antiviral activity against various pathogens, but activity against the NNV has not yet been reported. The binding affinity of 70 compounds was calculated against the GHSC70 with the docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation approaches. Both the docking and MD methods predict 4 (PubChem CID: 14492795, 10134, 5280863, and 11119228) inhibitory compounds that bind strongly with the GHSC70 protein with a binding affinity of -9.7, -9.5, -9.1, and -9.0 kcal/mol, respectively. Also, the ADMET (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity) properties of the compounds confirmed the drug-likeness properties. As a result of the investigation, it may be inferred that Neem plant compounds may act as significant inhibitors of viral entry into the host cell. More in-vitro testing is needed to establish their effectiveness.

With the development of advanced virus diagnostic technologies, numerous viruses, including novel viruses, have been identified explosively from various biological samples around the world over the last decade. For plant viruses, approximately 376 novel viruses have been reported in the last three years. Information on the occurrence and host ranges of plant viral diseases in a particular country or region is very important for diagnosis, quarantine, and control of the viral diseases. Recently, based on active research on the diagnosis and identification of plant viruses, a significant number of newly occurring viruses and new viral host plants have been reported in South Korea. This review paper provides integrated information on plant viruses and viral host plants newly reported in South Korea between 2020 and 2022 to help diagnose, control, and quarantine plant virus diseases in crop fields.

Viruses diagnosed on crops including rice plants from farmers or agricultural extension agencies cover the country were 11 species including Broad bean wilt virus 2 (BBWV2) in 2008. Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) was the most important virus having the detection rate of 22.9%. Two viruses of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) and Tobacco leaf curl virus (TLCV) inducing leaf yellow and curl diseases on tomatoes were occurred newly with the detection rate of 12.2% and 4.0%, respectively, in 2008. Rice stripe virus (RSV) was occurred on 869.5 ha mainly at Jindo and Haenam areas in Jeollanamdo province. At Jindo area, 12 plots were damaged severely with the infected hill rate of 83.8%. At the main production area of oriental melon at Seongju, almost all fruits from whole sale market at Seongju were infected with Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) as the detection rate of 87%. The areas occurred TSWV in Korea were 25 totally from 2003 including 7 areas newly reported in 2008 including Naju in Jeoallanamdo. TSWV could be reduced as 0.1 % from 5.3% by covering insect proof net in vinyl house after chemical soil sterilization. Tomato yellow leaf curl disease was occurred on April in 2008 at Tongyoung area in Kyeongsangnamdo, and detected continuously at 13 areas, 7 in Kyeongsangnamdo, 4 in Jeollabukdo and 2 in Jejudo. Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) was occurred abruptly in a confined space of a civil breeding greenhouse and a cultivar evaluation field followed by disuse 17.4 M/T of potato tubers. No PSTVd was detected at 17 fields cultivated the related potatoes to the bred company by RT-PCR.
Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) was not infected in figleaf gourd by sap inoculation. However CGMMV was detected by RT-PCR from the figleaf gourd collected from a field growing cucumber grafted onto figleaf gourd in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam Province in 2008. Which field showed 100% infection rate of the virus disease. In the experiment grafted with cucumber onto figleaf gourd, transportation of CGMMV through cucumber to figleaf gourd was confirmed by RT-PCR when the virus was mechanically inoculated on the leaves of the cucumber. The amplified DNA concentration of the virus on electrophoresis gel was much higher in the cucumber than in the figleaf gourd. However, the virus particles from the figleaf gourds were not observed under electron microscopy, also sap of the figleaf gourds was not transmittable to Nicotiana benthamiana. To identify the existence of CGMMV particle, the virus was purified from figleaf gourd and cucumber growing together in the graft system. CGMMV solution extracted from the cucumber represented a typical absorption spectrum of the virus but that from the figleaf gourd did not. Only a few CGMMV particles were observed in the purified preparation from the figleaf gourd. These results confirmed that CGMMV only passed through figleaf gourd in the grafting system. This study indicated that figleaf gourd is not a host of CGMMY.
Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) is the most popular herb for medical purpose in Korea. Recently, viral diseases from Korean ginseng showing various degrees of severe mottling, variegation and mosaic symptoms have caused quantity losses of Korean ginseng in a large number of farms. Watermelon mosaic virus (named WMV-gin) was identified as a causal agent for the disease of Korean ginseng. Interestingly, WMV-gin failed to infect both Korean ginseng plant and susceptible host species including cucurbitaceous plants by mechanical inoculation. However, WMV-gin could successfully infect Korean ginseng by transmission of two aphid species (Myzus persicae and Aphis gossypii). It is likely that transmission of WMV-gin was done by both the aphid species during feeding behavior of the two aphid species on Korean ginseng, though the aphids dislike feeding in Korea ginseng. Similarly, a strain of WMV (WMV-wm) isolated from watermelon was transmitted successfully to Korean ginseng plant by the two aphid species, but not by mechanical inoculations. Transmission assays using M. persicae and A. gossypii clearly showed both WMV-gin and WMV-wm were not transmitted from infected Korean ginseng plant to cucurbit species that are good host species for WMV. These results suggest WMV disease occurring in Korean ginseng plant can be controlled by ecological approaches.
A yellow stripe and bud benting disease of soybean was commonly observed on the field at Suweon area. The causal agent was identified as alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) by indicator plant reactions, physical properties, serological test and electron microscopy. AMV produced vein clearing, top necrosis, top bent and mottling on the parts of soybean plants. Local lesions were produced on the inoculated leaves of Vigna sesquipedialis, Vicia faba and Tetragonia expansa, while Chenopodium am, anticolor, C. quinoa, Pisum satvium, Petunia hybrida and Nicotiana tabacum 'Bright yellow' were systemically infected. The thermal inactivation point was $60^{\circ}C$, dilution end point was $10^{-3}$, and longevity in vitro was 2 days at room temperature. AMV from soybean was reacted with AMV - antiserum in agar gel diffusion test. Electron microscopy of AMV from soybean exhibited bacilliform particles of 60nm in length.
