Prunus glandulosa Thunb.(Rosaceae) and its distribution on the Korean Peninsula

  • Prunus glandulosa Thunb. [=Cerasus glandulosa (Thunb.) Sokolov] (Rosaceae) is native to the warmtemperate region of China (Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hebei, Henan, Jiangsu, Shaanxi, Shandong, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Zhejiang Provinces). It is naturalized in the United States (i.e. Alabama, Michigan and North Carolina) and Canada (Ontario). This species, previously only recorded as introduced or cultivated plants on the Korean Peninsula, was confirmed to be naturally distributed in the southwestern coast islands(i.e. Geomun-do, Chuja-do and an uninhabited island in Shinan-gun of Jeollanam-do). Prunus glandulosa Thunb. is distinguished from a related taxon P. japonica var. nakaii (H. Lév.) Rehder by pedicel 8-12 (-16) mm long, linear stipules, glabrous style, and pink petals. The morphological characters and illustration of P. glandulosa Thunb. are provided with line drawings and photographs from the natural habitat. In addition, it is likely that a new habitat will be found by plant biodiversity investigations through the southwestern coast islands. Further research is needed to determine its population size, distribution, and threats, as well as identify appropriate locations for conservation collection of germplasm.

Nineteen new records of plant species including two new genera recorded from the Bhutan Himalayas

  • Through the collection of herbarium specimens in Bhutan over the years, new plant species are discovered nearly annually. Thus, this paper reports two new genera and 19 new records of flowering plant species from Bhutan. The new genera include Eurycorymbus of the family Sapindaceae and Homalium of the family Salicaceae. The new records of plant species are Eranthemum erythrochilum (Acanthaceae), Hemidesmus indicus (Apocynaceae), Ilex umbellulata (Aquifoliaceae), Canarium strictum (Burseraceae), Ehretia acuminate (Boraginaceae), Vaccinium sikkimense (Ericaceae), Nothapodytes foetida (Icacinaceae), Machilus edulis (Lauraceae), Grewia asiatica (Malvaceae), Hibiscus fragrans (Malvaceae), Cipadessa baccifera (Meliaceae), Baccaurea javanica (Phyllanthaceae), Canthiumera glabra (Rubiaceae), Homalium napaulense (Salicaceae), Eurycorymbus cavaleriei (Sapindaceae), Acmella radicans (Asteraceae), Silene latifolia (Caryophyllaceae), Cleome rutidosperma (Cleomaceae), and Cuphea carthagenensis (Lythraceae). Morphological determinations of the genera and species were carried out at the National Herbarium (THIM) of the National Biodiversity Centre of Bhutan. Brief descriptions of the species, phenology, and photo plates are provided in this annotated checklist.

  • An electric precipitator in a thermal electric power plant is essential equipment for preventing air environment pollution. However, it is difficult for the existing control systems to make efficient effects on dust collection. This is because AVC and ERC consist of independent, separate systems in the existing systems. To solve this problem, we developed an intelligent distributed control system, which makes optimal control possible through connection operations between the control systems. In this paper, we analyzed system performance and fly ash reduction effects through the developed system structure, development contents and its actual application to power plant.

  • Human Factors Engineering (HFE) for Main Control Room (MCR) of Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has been applied to optimize the design and operation of Man-Machine Interface (MMI) between operators and their equipment in consideration of physical, psychological and cognitive aspects. However, it has been observed that operators complain about environmental discomfort in the MCR since the operators in the MCR experience excessive stress due to the environmental factors such as inappropriate interior and lighting system. Since the HFE is an essential factor for the high fidelity performance of operators in the MCR, the adequate MCR environment design with HFE rules and guidelines is as much important to enhance the operability and reliability of the MCRs. Therefore, there has been a strong need to design a pleasant environment for the MCR to improve human performance of the operators.

General Introduction of American Ginseng Indigenous in USA and Canada

  • American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) is herbaceous perennial plants indigenous to North American forests. This is highly valued as medicinal herbs with a long history of collection from wild populations since 1716. Wild American ginseng distributed from Quebec in Canada to northern Florida in USA. A heavy concentration is found in the Appalachian mountains, although wild American ginseng is considered endangered. The price paid for field cultivated ginseng has dropped dramatically in the past 10 years, while the price for wild or woods cultivated ginseng has rised significantly. The price curve for ginseng resembles a roller coaster, reflecting not only supply and demand but many other factors. This information will be useful to understand American ginseng compared to Korean ginseng.

Bud sports in the popular mulberry cultivar, Victory-1 and their characteristics

  • Bud sport (bud mutation) is a valuable source for existing new genotypes in mulberry (Morus spp.) as well as critical materials for studying the molecular mechanisms underlying essential traits. Thus, identification, collection, characterization, and conservation of such natural variants are prerequisites for enhancing the mulberry genetic resource in the germplasm. In this context, we identified and characterized three bud sports (VBS-1, VBS-2, and VBS-3) of a popular mulberry cultivar, Victory-1 (V-1). These bud sports are morphologically, anatomically, and genetically more distinct from their mother plant, Victory-1. Moreover, these bud sports display lower growth and yield potential. Furthermore, these showed remarkably lower 2C DNA contents of 0.74 pg (VBS-1), 0.78 pg (VBS-2), and 0.76 pg (VBS-3), when compared to their mother plant V-1 (2C = 0.81 pg). On the other hand, molecular characterization between the bud sports and their mother plant revealed the existence of genetic variation due to the natural bud mutation that occurred in the mulberry cultivar Victory-1.

습식 배연탈황설비용 습분제거기 포집효율 평가 (Collection Efficiency of a Mist Eliminator for Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization)

  • Recently, there has been much research on the effect of ultrafine dust on human body with increasing interest in the ultrafine dust. In the Republic of Korea, there are many old thermal power plants, and the amount of ultrafine dust emitted from the thermal power plants is reported to be about 14% of the total amount of domestic fine dust. Therefore, the amount of fine dust from the flue gas desulfurization facility in the thermal power plant needs be reduced. In this study, we made an experimental setup to simulate a flue gas desulfurization facility and analyzed the physical characteristics of the particles passing through a mist eliminator. Experiments were carried out to investigate the collection efficiency of the mist eliminator by using the Arizona Test Dust in a dry environment, and then spraying limestone slurry into the flue gas desulfurization system equipped with the mist eliminator to examine the size and morphology of limestone particles upstream and downstream of the mist eliminator. Cut-off size of the mist eliminator was formed at about $6{\mu}m$. The result of this study is expected to be helpful for designing an electrostatic precipitator for removing particles passing through the mist eliminator.

국내에서 분리된 Fusarium sambucinum 종복합체 균주의 재동정 및 문헌 고찰 (Re-identification of Fusarium sambucinum Species Complex Strains in Korea and Their Literature Review)

  • Fusarium sambucinum 종 복합체는 식물에 심각한 질병을 일으키는 분류군이다. 국내에서는 F. sambucinum 종 복합체가 일으키는 식물병에 대한 많은 연구가 보고되었으나, 한국식물 병명목록에는 2종(F. graminearum, F. sambucinum)이 14개의 기주에 식물병을 일으키는 정보만이 등록되어 있다. F. sambucinum 종복합체의 다양성 및 병원성을 확인하기 위해 농업미생물은행(Korean Agricultural Culture Collection)에 보존된 57 균주의 F. sambucinum 종 복합체를 다중 유전자 염기서열 분석(multi-locus sequence typing)을 바탕으로 7종(F. asiaticum, F. graminearum, F. vorosii, F. meridionale, F. bootii, F. kyushuense, F. armeniacum)으로 재동정하였다. 이전의 보고와 이번 연구의 결과에 따라, F. sambucinum 종 복합체 중 5종(F. asiatum, F. graminearum, F. vorosii, F. armeniacum, F. sambucinum)이 24개의 기주에 병원성을 보였으며, 3종(F. meridionale, F. bootii, F. kyushuense)의 병원성은 명확하지 않았다.

Development of EST-SSR Markers for Evaluation of Genetic Diversity and Population Structure in Finger Millet (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.)

  • Finger millet, Eleusine coracana Gaertn., is more nutritious than other cereals and millets and widely cultivate in tropical regions of the world. However, status of its genetic diversity remained concealed due to lack of research work in this species. In recent years, microsatellites have become the most used markers for studying population genetic diversity. In present study, genetic diversity and structure of different populations of finger millet from Africa and South Asia was examined at molecular level using newly developed EST-Simple Sequence Repeat (EST-SSR) markers using a total of 1,927 ESTs of Eleusine coracana available in the NCBI database. In total, 46 primers produced 292 alleles in a size range of 100-500 bp and mean Polymorphism Information Content (PIC) and Marker Index (MI) were 0.372 and 1.04, respectively. 46 primers showed polymorphism and 21 primers were identified as having a PIC value above 0.5. Principal coordinates analysis and the dendrogram constructed out of combined data of both markers showed grouping of finger millet accessions to their respective area of collection. The 156 accessions was classified into four groups, such as three groups of Africa collection and one group of Asia. Results of present study can be useful in identifying diverse accessions and management of this plant resource. Moreover, the novel SSR markers developed can be utilized for various genetic analyses in this species in future.

절접에 의한 헛개나무(Hovenia dulcis var. koreana Nakai) 신품종(풍성 1, 2, 3호)의 증식 (New Cultivars Multiplication of Oriental Raisin Tree (Hovenia dulcis var. koreana Nakai) by Veneer Grafting)

  • 헛개나무(Hovenia dulcis var. koreana Nakai, Korea raisin tree)는 동아시아가 원산지이며, 식 약용 수종으로서 밀원수종으로도 가치가 증대되고 있는 수종이다. 본 연구는 헛개나무의 절접에 의한 접수의 채취시기와 연령 및 비닐하우스 설치에 따른 접목활착율의 효과를 조사하는데 목적이 있다. 헛개나무 신품종은 절접에 의한 접목 결과 클론간 유의적인 차이가 인정되지 않았다. 온대 북부 권역에서는 휴먼기인 춘분 전에 접수를 채취하는 것이 가장 적합하며, 비닐하우스를 설치하는 경우에는 86% 이상의 높은 접목 활착율을 얻을 수 있다. 접수 연령은 1년지가 가장 적합하며 접목 후 비닐터널을 설치하여 접목상을 관리하면 80% 이상의 높은 접목활착율을 얻을 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.
